It’s the time of year when we begin planting – flowers, crops, vegetable gardens – so it is fitting to hear about the grain of wheat in today’s gospel. “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains a single grain.” Jesus uses it to show us one of the paradoxes at the center of the gospel and of our human experience. We find our greatest fulfillment when we let go of our selfish will and begin to will the good of others…when we learn to see ourselves as part of something bigger than ourselves.

Next Saturday, March 24, will be a morning of reflection for our pastoral region. Please join Fr. Richmond, Deacon Jeff, and myself as we reflect upon the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity. We want them to become the foundation of our friendship with God, a friendship that grows and grows. Friendship is a great way to see how dying to oneself leads to life. In a friendship (or a marriage) we can’t always get our own way. Sometimes we defer to what is best for our friend. Yet, this opens more possibilities for being together with one’s friend and rejoicing that you can be together.

St. Joseph school has a fine arts fair each year. It will take place on Thursday evening. If I remember correctly there is a music performance and then the students other works are on display as well.

Next weekend is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. See the next page for the schedule of Triduum services.

What a joy to know, love, and serve the good God. In Christ,

Diaconate Father Rob asked me to say a few words about the Diaconate that might be of interest to men today who may be considering serving Christ and His Church in this special way. As you may or may not know, I entered the first class of Deacons in our Archdiocese. That was in 1973, about 45 years ago. Neither Janis nor I have ever regretted a day since that time of having made that decision. God is good and truly repays 100 fold. If you feel that you are being called to serve The Lord and His Church by pursuing Ordination to the Diaconate, don’t ignore it. Believe me it will prove to be a tremendous blessing. I don’t intend to enumerate all of the things one can do as an Ordained Deacon because most of them are what you are already doing as a Eucharist Minister or designated Lector. The difference is additional graces from the Holy Spirit. Also, however, as a Deacon you will be authorized to Baptize, to read the Gospel at Mass, Preach the Word, and bless persons and articles, officiate at Weddings and Funerals. As an ordained Deacon, your designated Liturgical role is Caretaker of the Eucharist. As such you will be responsible for purifying the sacred vessels and reposing the consecrated species. Through all of this, your personal relationship with your spouse and your children is also blessed and magnified. You are also called to a life of constant prayer through your commitment to Morning and Evening prayers in the Divine Office. ---Personally I have especially appreciated the opportunity to officiate at each of my children’s weddings and baptizing my grandchildren, This has resulted in a special binding relationship in our family. My advice to you, if you are being called, Pray in Thanksgiving and say “YES”. Deacon Jim

Your nonperishable food donations will be distributed to our immediate neighbors within our St. Peter’s parish boundary. Over the past 12 months we have provided assistance to our neighborhood Families in need of emergency food. Your Easter Food and cash donations will also provide Easter Food boxes to at least 20 + Families in need. Please return your food donations at the Weekend Mass March 25th. Plastic containers will be in the back of Church for your donations. Thank you as always for your continued support of our St. Vincent de Paul Society. Your love of your neighbor is a visible, tangible sign of your Faith. Thank You!

Then the upright will say to him in re-ply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you? When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?" And the King will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me." Matthew 25: 37-43.
