Official Newsletter of the Tustin Police Officers Association FALL 2016 Thin. Blue. Line. It is known as the “Thin Blue Line,” the line of officers who put their lives between innocent civilians and those who wish to do them harm. However, the Blue Line is more than that. It is a family that extends beyond blood lines and encompasses all those who put on the badge and lay their life on the line for their community. When an officer dies in the line of duty, this “Blue Family” comes together from all over to pay their respects for the hero who has died doing what we have all pledged to do: protecting his or her community. 2016 has been a tragic year for the Law Enforcement Family. Tustin Police Department has been honored to send members of our Honor Guard to attend Law Enforcement funerals in Dallas, Texas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; New York; Des Moines, Iowa; and more locally, Palm Springs, and Los Angeles. All of these communities opened their hearts to agencies from all over the United States and Canada who travelled to pay respects to their brothers and sisters in blue. www.TustinPOA.org Tax ID: 81-1370730 1 HE HANGAR Members |Family |Community Social Media Please check out our website www.tustinpoa.org and don’t forget to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Thin. Blue. Line. It is known as the “Thin Blue Line,” the line of officers who put

their lives between innocent civilians and those who wish to do them harm.

RETIREE CORNER One of the priorities of the existing TPOA board has been to

give more attention to retired members. The first step was re-negotiating our life insurance benefit to allow retiring members to maintain a modified benefit when they retire.

The next phase in welcoming back our members is re-writing our by-laws to include a retiree class of membership. TPOA Retiree Members will be invited to TPOA events, and will have an ever-increasing role within the organization. We are excited to bring back our retired members, hear their stories, learn from their experiences, and share with them all the exciting things we have going on.

This is just the beginning of what we hope is a renewed culture of showing appreciation to our retired members. We are all open to any ideas to further this relationship.

If you are a retired Tustin PD employee and did not receive our email invitation please email [email protected].

THANK YOU The members of the Tustin Police Officers Association cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of

support we have received. The financial contributions we have received in our first foray into

conducting our own fundraising has been overwhelming. Equally

as amazing is the number of people who have been stopping to thank us, let us know they are behind us and drop goodies off at the station. These are trying

times in law enforcement but all of your gestures of support go a

long way. THANK YOU!

Tustin POA SPOOKY

OLD TOWN JAIL

Our old town jail travelled to Laguna Beach, with a spooky

twist, to lend support to the Jon Coutchie Halloween Bash.

Jon Coutchie, a fallen Laguna Beach PD Officer, loved

halloween and loved kids. This annual event raises money for CSP Youth Shelters while also

acting as a tribute to our brother in blue.

TPOAcares CENTER The Jewelry Exchange in Tustin has long been a supporter

of the Tustin Police Officers Association. This year, they have gone above and beyond for us by donating the use of

one of their vacant suites at 15722 Tustin Village Way. We are in the process of fundraising and sourcing

contractors to modify the space. Our goal is to be able to use the location as an office and boardroom for our

membership as well as a Community Outreach Center. The large open portion can be used for after school tutoring,

youth groups, community meetings, and more. Thank you to Mr. Bill Doddridge, Sylvia Trujillo, and the

Jewelry Exchange for your generosity and support.

As the holidays approach, so do thieves. Please use extra caution. Lock your cars, doors & windows and make

arrangements to avoid leaving packages outside.

TURKEY BOWL 2016 It has been a rite of passage. Each November one or two members of the TPOA are seen limping, on crutches, or in a cast. November has been a dangerous month for us for the past six years. The danger though, was not from the streets, but from the green turf of St. Jeanne de Lestonnac’s sports field while playing flag football.

Six years ago Sergeant Jeff Taylor started the Turkey Bowl - a flag football tournament pitting teams from Police agencies throughout Orange County against each other.

The entry fees were used to purchase Turkey Dinners for families in need in the Tustin area, which were distributed by TPOA and TPSSA members at the Tustin Family Youth Center on Newport and Sycamore.

This year, for our own safety, and to continue fostering a positive relationship with the youth of Tustin, we changed things up. The Tustin Police Department is sponsoring a youth version of the tournament for the students at Heideman Elementary School. Practices are underway every Thursday and Friday. So far the program has been a great success. There are almost 80 students signed up and divided into six teams named after PAC 12 colleges. The teams are coached by TPOA members who take the opportunity to promote healthy living, good citizenship, teamwork, and a desire for higher learning. The final tournament will take place on Wednesday, November 23.

With the format change of the Turkey Bowl, we needed a new way to fundraise to help offset the cost of our annual Turkey Dinner Give-away. Several years ago, the TPOA hosted an in-house “Stache for Cash” moustache growing contest. While, at the time, it was a one-off event, the advent of “Movember” turned moustache growth into a sport. As such, we decided to bring it back.

TPOA and TPSSA members, city employees and select members of the public were invited to join the contest. For only a $20 donation to TPOAcares, competitors not only gained the blessing of Chief Celano to grow glorious facial art (slightly outside the normal grooming standards) but have the opportunity to win a host of great prizes, bragging rights, and perhaps most importantly, a spot on the TPOA MOUSTACHE WALL OF FAME.Winners will be decided by a panel of moustache experts following the Turkey Bowl at Heideman Elementary on November 23.

Once again, The Tustin Police Department will be supporting the Run with a Cop program. This program was an overwhelming success last year and looks to be even better this year.

TPOAcares has partnered with the Tustin Hangar Half Marathon and 5K. Our Run with a Cop kids will run the 5K as part of the program. Additionally, TPOAcares will receive 20% of the registration fees of anyone who chooses us as their charity at sign up. The charity with the most runners will win $25,000 worth of fitness equipment.

Don’t wait….sign up today!
