Support The Boardwalk Meeting Jan 11th @ The Galleon Inn

It was felt that it was really important to keep up the momentum of

the groupsenthusiasm by continuing to research

and develop the existing ideas to widen the appeal of the Slashpond Boardwalk and potential funding available. It was agreed that at the next meeting these would be discussed in earnest so that

members could assign themselves to a particular task, project, funding

research. It was agreed to try and be a bit strategic about future Fundraising

Events andget a calendar of events planned early

. We need to get ideas down andorganisers allocated!

Hayley, Scott & Les had met with Anthony Richards from PCNPA in December and they had discussed the requirements for handrails & kickboards on the new Boardwalk. Hayley provided Anthonys comprehensive report which said, in short, that the current provision should be replicated on the new boardwalk , but with the addition of a third lower rail on the handrails. Les & Scott completed the January risk assessment [Sat 24th] and measured up for the wood requirements for the handrails/kickboards and will now get some quotes for supply. The quote will enable the group to have a target of what monies will be required to fund the new rails and kickboards. It was agreed that once raised, this money would be ring fenced in the accounts. Susan advised the group that quite a

SUPPORT THE BOARDWALK!few of the boards in the section of boardwalk from the from the viewing area towards the picnic area had deteriorated and needed attention. Jonny Griffiths has repaired these using the timber stored. Although not part of the groups 'remit', the gravel path in the same area was also discussed, it was felt that its current condition was very poor and there are flooding problems. Ben agreed to talk to the building contractors at the school to see if they could be persuaded to take a look and offer any advice or a practical solution. Agriweld [the chosen boardwalk contractor] confirmed the steel had been ordered. HCC have confirmed since the meeting that they are in receipt of the invoice for the steel and the Clerk, is administering her first draw down of SITA grant funds to pay Agriweld. Karen had emailed a copy of the accounts to group members earlier in the day. Susan updated us on the Easyfundrasing total which has reached an excellent 267. Susan agreed to keep Facebook posts updated to remind users about EF especially as there are lots of funds to raised by those booking holidays online! http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/supporttheboardwalk Future fundraising events were discussed. Ideas on the night included: A Valentines event, Making the most of Easter & Triathlon visitors, Easter Coffee Morning, The Official Opening of the new Boardwalk, A Boardwalk 2016 or academic year Calendar that could be soldLinda Harrison has been in

contact since the meeting and confirmed she is planning a fundraising event at her home, Enfiled House, around St Davids Daya Coffee morning type event, with a Welsh Leek Soup Twist. Keep an eye on Facebook and email your boardwalk news & photographs to the [email protected] or send a message via Facebook. The next meeting date for your diary is Monday Feb 9th 7:30pm.In Other Boardwalk News...John from Puffin Way ran the Xmas pudding run and raised a superb 245 for Support the Boardwalk so do please shake his hand when you see him in the village! We posted onto Facebook asking for ideas for future fundraising ...and this is what we have so far ...group members and other volunteers are required to help them become real events! St. Davids Day Celebrations on Mon March 2nd at Linda Harrison's Enfield House ..She plans to do a lunchtime event and will serve delicious homemade soup - please contact Linda, if you can be there to serve or wash up in the day, bake a cake, make some soup etc.Easter car wash - please contact Karen Griffiths if you can help with this! And Martin Solomon of the band Seacow, has offered to do a gig in support of the boardwalk and the village hall ...in the village hall! Easter weekend is their preference - this will take some serious organising , tickets, licences etc. so we could do with a couple of volunteers to work on this with Martin - please take a look at http://seacowband.com Or search them on Facebook to hear what they sound like!

December 2014 to identify maintenance required and set the precept for the next year. During The sub-committee recommended that the precept for be set at 21 which will be an increase of between 6p - 20p per week per household depending on their band. The Clerk is to arrange for this to be published in the February Diary and on Facebook.Boardwalk Update Cllr Mark Burch confirmed that the steels had been ordered for the Boardwalk and explained the installation procedure. He advised that the Boardwalk would remain open during the construction. The Clerk advised she would take care of the financial side of the project and had sent off forms for online banking in order to speed up the movement of the grant money. An audit trail will be maintained of all online paymentsPlay Parks Rota The Clerk advised that the wet pour was now in a very poor condition and despite promises from a Pembrokeshire contractor she was struggling to find a local contractor to carry out the work. She was very concerned that the work should be completed before it deteriorated further. PCC contractors have advised that they were unable to do the work due to their work load. Cllr Mark Burch said he would make some enquiries regarding local contractors before Christine issued the work further afield. The wooden benches are now coming to the end of their lifecycle and will be replaced before the summer.Planning Support was given for the following NP/14/0696

On your marks! Bang!! We are off to another year of delights and wonder at what grows well and what doesn't!It is a clich, but spring is just around the corner with the harbingers: snowdrops, primroses, my cousin's camellias, all smiling and encouraging me to shake off the winter blues and start sowing.Of course I have not been completely comatose and my seed potatoes are in their egg boxes chitting away with hopes of planting my first earlies at the end of February weather permitting. This year I am conducting my own trial of six different varieties of new potatoes, five plants of each. The soil at the allotment is great for growing spuds, but I have not found that particular potato that gives me the waxy flesh and flavour I so remember from my childhood in Devon.Whilst on the subject, we are still eating the Charlotte potatoes (second early) that I left in the ground far too long and so ended up being stored like main crop. However they are beginning to sprout (chit) so will not be good for much longer. The Pink Fir Apple are still in good shape (well not the potato of course!) and should last in store until well into March. In spite of their very knobbly shape they are easy to cook (boil) with their skins on. They have a slightly nutty flavour.Talking of main crop, this year I am growing the Sarpo Mira blight resistant potato, with a hope they will store well into spring as well as Pink Fir AppleAt home I grow a 5m row of sweet peas, always the most heavily scented in a mixture of colours. Last year's I sowed in the previous autumn and needed a lot

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENSof pinching out to stop them becoming tangled and unmanageable. They did seem to start flowering earlier than usual in spite of the cold spring. However, I did not sow any last autumn so will do so mid Feb and see if it makes much difference. I will use my heated propagator set to 15C.For broad beans I am growing The Sutton, a dwarf variety that did well last year and easier to protect from gales on our very exposed site. I am starting them in the polytunnel in half a paper towel tube. I used this method last year and the plants did well with no checking when planted out. The trick is not to start them too early so they are about 6 tall when planting out tube and all in late March, again weather permitting. Last year I delayed planting out until April as it was such a cold spring, and they were a bit leggy, but survived and cropped surprisingly well.I still have carrots and leeks in the ground, but they really are coming to the end now. Cabbage and perpetual spinach are hardly growing at all and the spinach trashed by the gales, but still edible and should carry on until late spring before bolting as usual! There are 10m x 10m plots available at 25 per annum which includes site insurance and manure provided free of charge. Some have been under cultivation and available as the owner has left the County, so first come first served!Patrick Hellings, Chairman THCAG,

BIRD WATCH Welcome to this months Bird Watch. Im one of two Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithologys (BTOs) Garden BirdWatch Scheme in South Wales. Each month I introduce you to a bird or other animal that you might see in your garden.Bird of the Month: FieldfareThe Fieldfare is a winter visitor to Britain. From late October they arrive in large flocks from Scandinavia their arrival coinciding with the end of the Rowan berry crop in their breeding areas. They may remain with us until May. Fieldfares are members of the thrush family and are about the same size as a Blackbird but appear larger due to their upright stance. Their hopping run is typical of all thrushes. Males and females are identical in appearance (although the female has a slightly longer tail) with slate-grey head, nape and rump and contrasting chestnut coloured back and black tail. The throat and breast are a golden-brown with black streaks; if you get a really good view you should be able to see how the spots on the upper breast become dark chevrons as they progress downwards. Flocks of Fieldfares can be seen feeding on worms and insects in fields, often alongside species such as Redwing, or in berry-laden trees in the wider countryside. During severe winter weather, and when fruit crops are depleted in the wider countryside, Fieldfares will venture into gardens. Did you know? The maximum recorded age of a Fieldfare is 14 years, 8 months and 24 days (set in 2010).At their breeding grounds, Fieldfares join together to pelt predators with their droppings.Bird rings from Norwegian and Finnish Fieldfares have been found in the pellets of a Peregrine Falcon in the Brecon Beacons. The Welsh name is Socan Eira. How to attract them to your garden: When the ground is frozen, Fieldfares may be attracted by fallen apples or berries on trees such as holly, rose hips or Ivy.Conservation status: RED due to recent breeding population decline (19692007).BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that Fieldfares are more likely to visit gardens during harsh winters. During eleven years of surveying my garden, I have only recorded Fieldfare three times and that was during the hard winter of 2010 at the very beginning and end of the year.Make Your Garden Count! If you took part in the RSPBs Big Garden Birdwatch last month and enjoyed it, why not step up to BTO Garden BirdWatch the largest year-round survey of garden birds in the world? Please contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk (Swansea and surrounding areas). Happy Garden Bird Watching!
