CARNIVAL UPDATEWhat's happening about that MUGA Multi Use Games

Area ?Experience of similar developments elsewhere is that a local school site represents the best value for money, delivering the best utility possible. The Carnival committee has raised funds over many years specifically for such a project and are in agreement that the preferred site for community MUGA (giving due consideration to cost, location, and utility) is at the Broad Haven school. At the end if 2013, all properties in Webbs Hill, with the exception of one, are understood to be second homes . With that in mind several meetings have been scheduled (November & December) to enable as much consultation as possible and keep residents of Webbs Hill informed of intent.Local headmaster, Andy Williams has subsequently also met residents of Webbs Hill and they voiced their support for the development. In summary, the development has the full support of the school & the school governing body. The community council also voicing support through Peter Morgan. & the Local Authority through Sinead Henehen (community regeneration unit), therefore the recommendation is that we proceed . Next steps: The carnival committee draw up a remit letter for the provision of the pledged 20K to the school governing body on the understanding that it is solely used for the development of a MUGA facility, and that this facility be available for community use outside of normal school hours and that this agreement stands in perpetuity etc etc), the local authority planning & education departments can then proceed as they require. The carnival committee can get on with what they do best - arranging Carnival 2014 and raising more funds for worthwhile community projects!

The 2014 Carnival AGM is on 7th June at Anchor House, 7.30pm

At the meeting we will...Discuss 2014 Carnival Theme - got any ideas?

PEMBROKESHIRE COAST TRIATHALONThe Triexercise Pembrokeshire Coast Triathlon is happening on the 28th June at 9am this year. This will be the tenth triathlon to be held in Broad Haven in the last twenty years. The course is designed to be challenging, but enjoyable, making the most of the superb scenery that the Coastline has to offer. After a 1.5k swim in the bay at Broad Haven the competitors will then cycle 43k, thinking about the steep hill out of Broad Haven, hoping there is enough time for their legs to recover before the hill in Herbrandston looms up just over half way through the route. Once the competitors have completed the cycle, after a quick change of shoes, they will run 10.6k along the coast path and back down Long Lane to the finish line on the beach. To facilitate the event the road across the front of Broad Haven will be closed from 8am to about 12.30pm to allow safe access to the transition area for competitors. The carpark opposite The Galleon will also be closed for use as the transition area by competitors and the organisers apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but, please do come and support the competitors many of them are from The Haven. You never know you might be inspired to be on the start line next year. It happened to me!BROAD & LITTLE HAVEN WIAt the May meeting the 2014 Resolution Increasing Organ Donation was discussed , Barbara Piper relating to her familys experiences. Cups were presented by Ann Newbery, Federation Chairman , to Ann Lee for winning the photographic competition for next years calendar and Heather Payne for her floral arrangement in a tea cup. The evening finished with a quiz donated by Jan Broughton. The Annual Outing will take place on June 10th. We will be visiting the Museum of Childhood at LLangeler, Carms

and the nearby Chapel painted by P.O.Ws.We would also like to thank everyone who came to our New Age Kurling evening, and those people who gave their help. The team called The Brushes won, Kathryn and Tom Baker. We hope to run another event in the Autumn.

BIRD WATCH Bird of the Month: JackdawThe Jackdaw is a gregarious member of the crow family and can often be seen feeding alongside the much larger Rook on arable farmland. The Jackdaw is about the size of a Pigeon. Its plumage is black with a silvery grey neck; its beak and legs are also black. Adults have piercing ice-blue eyes; a bird with brown eyes is a juvenile. Jackdaws are faithful partners and will remain together even if breeding attempts are unsuccessful in successive years; pairs usually become more successful with age. Four or five eggs are laid but unless there is an abundance of food it is unlikely that all the chicks will survive. One of the reasons for this is that the eggs hatch asynchronously, meaning that incubation begins before all the eggs have been laid and thus the first chicks that hatch will be bigger and stronger than subsequent siblings and receive more food. Jackdaws are noisy birds and you will often hear them making their distinctive kjack call, particularly around their communal nesting sites. Jackdaws attract both public affection and notoriety because of their tendency to nest in chimney pots.Did you know?

    using cash machines.apangram (i.e. it

contains all 26 letters of the alphabet).Jac-y-do.

How to attract them to your garden: Jackdaws will eat invertebrates from the surface of your lawn but will also happily take seeds or fat from your bird table (you might need to get up early to see them though as they tend to visit gardens first thing in the morning!).Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern). The population has increased since the 1960s.BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that Jackdaws are more likely to be seen in gardens this month than at any other time of the year Im hoping this is true for me as I have yet to record one in my garden this year. Almost half of garden birdwatchers in Wales report seeing Jackdaws, compared to only 23% in England.Make Your Garden Count! If you enjoy watching the birds and wildlife in your garden why not take part in BTO Garden BirdWatch the largest year-round survey of garden birds in the world? THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENSWhat wonderful sunny and dry days we have had in early May plus a drying wind on a lot of the days so a lot of watering was needed in the garden, especially for the few new seedlings I have managed to germinate, their shallow roots dry out very quickly. I do not know why, but each year I seem to get caught out by the arrival of May! One minute I am germinating seeds on windowsills and worrying about night frosts, the next, my seed sowing programme is weeks behind and the carefully crafted March plan is abandoned and I am visiting garden centres and nurseries to buy vegetable plants. However, I am probably over reacting as everything seems to catch up once the soil really does warm up. Indeed it is hard to get succession sowing working properly. Early sowings have had awful germination rates this year, less than 20% - I wonder if it is the coldness of the air? After 6 weeks, seeds sown 3 weeks after the first sowing seem hardly any less developed. My experiment with 1 litre plastic milk containers did not work first time because the newspaper lining stuck to the sides and would not slide out. I modified the method by just putting a plug of newspaper in the bottom and this worked very well indeed. I shall shorten the container by about 2" to 3" for the next batch as the well established root system was all at the bottom and so the mid section collapsed during planting - not really a problem, but I am a bit of a

perfectionist. Incidentally, they fit a wooden wine case almost perfectly so management is really easy.I reported in the April Havens Diary that we had made a planning application for sheds along the north hedge thus effectively screening them from view. I understand that this planning application was supported by our Community Council (many thanks) and we await the outcome of the due process of the PCNPA planning department. We have only two and a half plots left available for this year and with the take up increasing each year I expect we will soon have to start a waiting list! This is wonderful because the site does have its limitations. Particularly annual rent (tenure/notice) from the council and the exposure of the site to strong winds off the sea, but then it is a magnificent view so I love it for all that.

The Havens Boardwalk Group 25 May 2014

Dear Volunteers,Havens Community Council wish to express their support for the large number of local residents who have come together to form the Havens Boardwalk Group. Ian Whitby, HCC Chairman, attended both meetings and was delighted to see the enthusiasm shown by the Group. The Council are pleased to support and agree the groups' plans to source local materials, have a qualified carpenter oversee repairs, take out public liability insurance to cover workers, arrange for a qualified structural engineer to inspect and report it is structurally safe and ask PCC Area Maintenance to inspect the work for HCC. Once the Boardwalk is re-opened it was agreed that the Group would inspect the walk on a weekly basis and record their findings using a form and system similar to the one currently being used by HCC to inspect and report on the Play Park. Repairs identified will be arranged and paid for from the Groups' fund raising and reports will be sent to

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY COUNCILEmail/ebost [email protected]

Christine, HCC Clerk. A more thorough inspection will be carried out quarterly. HCC are also keen to support the Groups' longer term plans to raise funds for the eventual replacement of the Boardwalk with a more durable material and have been advised that the land owners, Raymond Brothers, give their full support for the proposed plans.Ian Whitby [Chairman], and Sue Reynolds [Vice Chair] will be attending the next meeting on the 2 June.Christine LewisFor and on behalf of Havens Community Council

Community Spirit : How to Save a Valuable, Popular local

Amenity in 3 Steps! Step 1 - Embrace Social Media, engage with the community, spread

the word Step 2 - Get all interested parties

together, establish support & enthusiasm, Plan action

Step 3 - Implement Action plan

The Havens Community Council did previously ask for volunteers to form a group to save the boardwalk - but had no response, so plans had actually gone as far as deciding two thirds of the boardwalk was to be removed. But Wait! The miracle of social networking (Facebook & email) was successful in reaching the vast majority and those interested in keeping the boardwalk. Twenty-seven people attended two very successful meetings on May 12th & 19th: group formed! Splitting into two very productive interest groups, one walking the boardwalk with a consultant to assess the repairs required to get it open once again. The other, focusing on marketing to "support the boardwalk", raising funds to buy the materials to begin repairs. Repair work scheduled for volunteers on Saturday May 24th.Social Media: A Facebook page is established https://www.facebook.com/Havensboardwalk and the response is phenonmenal ! Email newletters updating group members and anyone else who has registered their interest

are sent out regularly and the buzz simply keeps people talking about the boardwalk.Interested Parties: The groups membership is widespread and consists of local business people, residents and holiday home owners as well as the landowners, representatives from Havens Community Council & local community development organisation PLANED. Other agencies such as PAVS have been especially useful in helping the group to become Insured.Action Plan: Initial repairs were carried out on May 24th with a view to getting the walk open and used again.23 volunteers - they came, they saw, they conquered - the weeds, the overgrown trees, the moss, the rotten boards, bannisters and uprights! They enjoyed good company, good laughs, coffee, homemade chocolate cakes & cookies. It was the most fantastic effort and the boardwalk looks superb. It is still a bit slippy though, there is a 'film' thats developed on some of the boards as they've been under the trees for so long and prevented from drying out properly and so it remains closed until safety inspections are completed and we get some good advice about how best to eradicate the slippy-ness! But we have some ideas and that will be the next stage of repairs and we hope that will happen very soon. Subsequent tasks will include the process of sourcing & comparing materials, getting quotes to replace / renovate the boardwalk with longer

lasting sustainable materials. Hopefully the group will be successful in accessing some grant monies to fund this. The plan is to widen the appeal of the boardwalk and the way in which it can continue to connect the community; its uses for education, people with disabilities & local groups. Other ideas include a community orchard and pontoons for children to learn to fish, pond dip etc.Fundraising: Donations have already been pledged & received! Fundraising is fundamental to all of our efforts. The Boardwalk needs donations. The new Boardwalk Group is a sub-group of the constituted Havens Community and although this enables us to apply for grants, grants are notoriously difficult to access. To be successful in accessing them, the group must have match funding, financial evidence of community support. If we are not able to access a grant, we will turn to plan B, the donations will be used directly to upgrade the boardwalk. Ideally, the walk is divided into sections and as funds are achieved, the materials to upgrade the next section will be purchased and fitted by volunteers. As well as generous donations from holiday home owners, we have initial funding pledges from the landowners the Raymond Bros. The Carnival committee, the Baptist church, the local Londis shop, who will donate their 5p per plastic bag charges and we especially like the 'buy a board'

idea, where someone can donate an amount and sponsor a board! Appropriate signage board[s] will be erected at the boardwalk naming, advertising & thanking sponsors & donors. The group has a Lloyds bank account & donations can be made now! Cheques should be made payable to Support The Boardwalk.Appeal: To appeal for continuing donations the group plans a varied marketing strategy including the placement of banners & posters around the Havens. We hope that local businesses will join the appeal by donating directly and spreading the word by advertising the existence of the boardwalk & encouraging its use by customers & visitors.Costs to date: 00.00, Zero, Zip! The meeting venue, the stationery, the timber, materials & labour, the premium for the insurance, the coffee & cakes, the marketing banner All generously & kindly donated! The HCC have advised that Pembrokeshire county council will Tarmac from the picnic area to the viewing point. HCC will fund repairs to the viewing point and the remaining walk will be the part renovated by the group. We are still not 'out of the woods' yet, having a lot of fundraising to achieve- but despite some saying the boardwalk is halfway to being condemned , we like to think of it as being halfway to renovation !
