A big thank you to all who came, participat-
ed and enjoyed the Empty Bowls Fundraiser
on Friday, February 1, 2013. The event was
a great success with the supper, the silent
auction the 50/50 raffle, and various other
donations raising over $3,128.28 for the
Hebron Country Food Pantry to help feed
those in our community in need. The crowd
enjoyed performances from the choir, band,
and applied music class, as well as The Hoos-
ier Recruits. This event started four years
ago in Hebron, with the effort of Mrs. Karen
Jania, HHS Art Teacher. With the assistance

Boys’ Wrestling The Hebron Boys wrestling team competed in the Crown Point wrestling sectional recently. The Hawks were able to send one wrestler, Gio-vanni Phan to the regional meet, also at Crown Point High School the following Saturday. Phan got 4th in his weight class at the sectional. Dan-ny Titak, Danny Wallace, Jordan Giacomin, and Brandon Sanchez clinched 5th place spots, quali-fying them for alternate spots at the regional. The Hawks ended up finishing 6th out of 8 teams and had 61 points. Crown Point ended up win-ning the sectional for the 11th straight year in a row.
Though Phan couldn’t advance past regionals, he completed a very successful season, with
over twenty wins on the season, along with three other of his teammates. The Hawks had one of their most successful seasons ever, clinching victories such as winning the Boone Groove Invitational and placing high in other big invita-tional.
In the off season, the Hawks look to put in a lot of work and participate in various wrestling camps to improve their skills and have a better season in 2014.
school Griffith. Hebron coach Stephanie
Schulte says that “The girls are always able to
find it within themselves to fight back when
down in a game. They are fighters, and always
have been.” When the season ended in the
sectional game against Winamac, senior Emily
DeFries said, “These girls are my best friends.
The season was a good one, and I enjoyed
being on such a successful team with them.
This season was one to remember.”
Although the girls’ basketball team ended their
season a little earlier than they had hoped for
on Tuesday, February 5, they had a lot to be
proud of. The girls started out their season
going 4-0 for the first time in school history.
One of those wins included an impressive 53-
27 win over Boone Grove which also came
with the possession of the Kup. Senior Rylie
Shrum said, “Having the Kup was the highlight
of the season. It was the first time since 2009
that Boone did not have it, and we did.” The
girls ended the season with an 8-12 record,
however many of the games were within 5
points including an overtime loss over 4A

The struggles continue for Hebron Basketball Thursday,
February 7, losing in another blow out to KV High
School. The Hawks just can’t
seem to pull it together and
beat a good team. The blame
could go to the coach, the staff,
and whoever else the critics
would like to pin the bad sea-
son on, but it comes down to
the players. The talent is there
they just have yet to collective-
ly played as a team and have
only a couple games left to pull
it together. On a positive note
the Hawks could turn the whole season around with a sectional
title. Individuals on the Hawks have all had great games this
year, but not together as a team. The
potential in this year’s team is shooting
through the roof and the staff, fans, and
community is just waiting for them to
have their break out game. The team
feels very confident and prepared for the
tournament. The first round of sectionals
is March 1 at Winamac High School and
the team hopes to see everyone there to
watch them take home the sectional title
for the second year in a row!

Reading really does count!! Fifty Hebron High School students that read over 100 points this past semester were treated to an ice cream sundae party on Friday,
February 8, 2013 during study hall in the media center. Besides being treated to dessert, the students were given a goodie bag full of
prizes based on the number of points they accumulated—the more points they read, the more prizes they received. There was also a
contest during the party where various students won a free book of their choice. The following students read 100 points and above:
Brad Blank, Samantha Brumley, Noah Cacovski, Lauren Carlson, Katie Clemens, Heaven Donovan, Emma Elliott, Jenna Giacomin, Jordan
Giacomin, Ryan Gilman, Jackie Hall, Daisy Heath, Chase Hines, Nicole Jonas, Natalie Kaczmarski, Jordan Keehn, Allison Lewis, Jessica
Lukasik, Matt Lyons, Kaylea Malcolm, Angela McCullouch, Nick Mendez, Kendal Mileski, Nathaniel Mlechick, Morgan Morrow, Faith
Pappas, Taylor Pass, Rachel Pauer, Gina Ramos, Nikki Seabolt, Dan Sheetz, Alex Skrivan, Logan Sodo, Ken Struven, Audrey Sutherland,
Kim Variot, Matt Variot, Krysten Wielgus, Sarah Witt, and Sam Ziants. Students that read over 200 points are: Marissa Clark, Michael
Creighton, Brittany Dopiriak, Rhalina Evans, Joann Keys, Zac Norman, Jerry Smith, and Vivian Sykora. Special congratulations and
recognition goes to Hayley Sowles who read 674 points, and Rachel Nellett who read 2,122 points during the first semester. At the end
of the second semester, readers that read over 100 points will once again be treated to a celebration.
Recently the high school media center
received new books for its patrons.
Out of the new arrivals, Mrs. Kraker
enjoyed one book in particular. The
novel, The Summer I Turned Pretty by
Jenny Han, is a perfect blend of sum-
mer fun and romance. The main char-
acter, Belly (not a very flattering name
but it’s a nickname from her child-
hood), has never been the kind of girl
that things happen to. Year after year,
she's spent her summers at the beach
house with Conrad and Jeremiah. The
boys never noticed Belly noticing them.
And every summer she hoped it would
be different. This time, it was. But the
summer Belly turned pretty was the
summer that changed everything.
Han's novel offers plenty of summer-
time drama to keep readers looking
forward to the next installment.
Kraker’s Corner
Besides assisting with the recent Empty Bowls fundraiser, NHS members have also been busy mak-ing fleece blankets. From part of the profit collected from the Little Caesar Pizza Kit fundraiser, NHS officers Bre Lewin, Rylie Shrum, Hailey Hernandez, Emily DeFries, and sponsor Mrs. Kraker went shopping and purchased enough fleece to make sixteen blankets. Fourteen members stayed after school for two nights to cut and tie the fleece making a variety of blankets for infants, chil-dren, and adults. Themes ran from dinosaurs to sports (Cubs & Bears logos) to zebra print to Win-nie the Pooh and Hello Kitty. After the blankets were made, they were donated to the Valparaiso Caring Place, a shelter that provides service to victims of violence and their children. Posted on the Caring Place Facebook page, “We would like to thank Mrs. Kraker and her National Honor Soci-ety students from Hebron High School! They used their pizza fundraiser money to purchase fleece and make blankets for the ladies and children at the shelter. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and giving spirit!” Blankets that are given out at the shelter will go home with the guests once they leave.
