If you believe ‘WHICH?’ the popularand usually well informed consumer magazine, when it comes to sellingyour most valuable possession youshould go for the cheapest onlinehouse selling service. Does that soundlike sound advice?

We agree with keeping costs down;that makes a lot of good sense butcan a wholly online provider reallyserve your needs fully? In short: NO.

The traditional Corporate High Streetagencies in the main do a good jobwhen it comes to finding buyers foryour property. They detail, they list, they advertise (at very high cost),they introduce, they hopefully sell, and they then charge you a fee. It isoften a rather large fee and we thinkthat the ‘WHICH?’ argument has somevalidity if it means “don’t pay toomuch”.

But there are now ‘New Generation’agency alternatives which providemost if not all of the basic services ofa traditional agent: Real people, realprofessional advice, access to prospective buyer lists, advertising onmajor portals, For Sale boards etc.,but they charge far less to do thedeal. Now that really makes sense, doesn’t it?

Instead of paying upwards of £3000 tosell your home, source a NewGeneration agent who will more thanlikely include the conveyancing (sellingsolicitor) and the EPC (EnergyPerformance Certification) for thesame or less money!

THE GOOD ESTATE AGENT is perhapsthe most innovative of this new breed;contact them on 01303 647221 andbe sure to get a GOOD deal.

Eczema is a skin condition affecting allages. It’s particularly distressing to seechildren suffering. Most people witheczema have either an intermittent orconstant red/pink, hot, itchy rashanywhere but commonly affecting thehands, behind the knees and inside ofthe elbow joints. The rash may crack, form blisters and can be extremelyuncomfortable and may becomeinfected if left untreated.

Eczema can be caused from exposureto external irritants when it is sometimes referred to as ‘contact dermatitis’. More often though thecause is internal. Many herbalists viewitchy red skin conditions as a result oftoo much heat in the body – it is anindication that, internally, something isoff balance. Perhaps the liver is overworked, maybe there are foodintolerances or the body’s’ toxin elimination mechanisms may be disturbed. Stress may also be playinga part.

If an external or dietary cause can beidentified, avoidance can often havequick and remarkable results. Foodintolerance testing can be invaluable inthese cases. Otherwise, use of a cooling and soothing cream made from

chickweed and/or peppermint and mayhelp control the itch. Chamomile andlavender flowers are both antisepticand promote healing – they help nourish the skin and reduce inflammation. For many peopleeczema is caused by a combination offactors and a course of internal treatment is usually recommended ifdietary changes have limited effect.Seeking the advice of a fully qualifiedmedical herbalist may help establishthe best way to tackle stubborneczema.Informal enquiries encouraged,Lynda Jones BSc(Hons) MNIMHDip BER Medical Herbalist &Intolerance Testing [email protected]

Make some Easter Resolutions!Easter Resolutions?Yes Easter Resolutions!By the time you read this article, youmay not even be able to rememberwhat New Year’s resolutions you established back in January. Don’tworry, neither do most people.Statistics show that only 8% of peopleare always successful in achieving theirresolutions and 24% have never succeeded on one resolution and failthem every year. If your resolution wasto lose weight or improve yourself insome way, you share the same goal as40% of the population. So ask yourself;is it happening? If the answer is no,chances are you were unrealistic in thetargets you set. If you were aiming tolose so many pounds of weight in fourmonths, maintaining an exercise planthat requires you to workout 3 hours aday or cut out all food you love is notgoing to be sustainable (and normallydoes more bad then good). So let’sstart over. Make small improvements to your eating habits. Find an exercise regimethat suits your lifestyle. Give time torest. This is why Pilates is so effective. It not only burns calories, tones you upand improves your posture. It’s also funand leaves you feeling more awake andenergetic then before you started. Ienjoy teaching it because I see people’s health improve dramatically.Pilates works for some, but it may besomething else for you. Whatever it is,find it, start doing it and establish somenew resolutions this Easter. Feel free tocome along to a class or download a workout tutorial online atwww.pilates32.com .

This season’s most fashionablecolours for interiors are bold andstrong: daring blacks and metallics, vivid citruses and a range of sorbet-like Fifties shades. Yet colour can be complicated: stray away from safeneutrals and who hasn’t ended up ina fog of indecision? Our guide tousing colour will help you avoidclashes and select the shades thatwork best for you. Colour is a hugely dynamic tool, affecting theway we feel in a powerful, albeitoften subconscious, way.

And we each have our own feelings about colour, so that one person’s warm and intimate room isanother’s nightmare of brash, clashing shades. All of which makesusing colour a rather dauntingundertaking. But never fear: thereare some simple guidelines to follow. Painting a room a new colouris a quick, easy and inexpensiveway to introduce a fresh look. Ifyou’re not sure where to start, there’s a wealth of inspiration to befound in books or magazines, andthe paint manufacturers themselvescan be a great help, whether in theform of brochures showing their

colours in action, a website with thefacility to paint a virtual room or colourcards that demonstrate which colourswork best together. If you’re wary ofusing too many different colours, butwould nevertheless like to introducesome contrasts, a good rule of thumbis that darker and lighter shades of the same colour are always goodtogether (simply look vertically up anddown the paint charts). So far so good.

Another consideration is where to putwhich paint colours. Bear in mind that hallways, stairways and landings arelinking areas; when you stand in themyou may be able to see a number ofdifferent rooms, so you should consider how their colours will worktogether. As a general guideline, restfulcolours, such as pale blues, lilacs andpinks, often work well in bedrooms, and bolder shades in dining rooms: redis a classic choice, in particular. In ahallway you could make a strong statement with a vibrant colour thatintroduces the house to visitors, or optfor something paler that will maximisethe sense of space. Conventionalcolours for bathrooms are watery bluesand greens, but there’s no reason whyyou shouldn’t opt for something completely different. Colours for livingrooms should generally be chosen towork around the existing furnishings –you might pick a colour from afavourite cushion, vase or painting, forexample; and the same goes forkitchens, where you’ll already havecabinets and worktops that will dominate a scheme. Experimentingwith paint colour is essential, as it canbe difficult to get it right...

first time. Always paint sheets of whitecard with your chosen samples andtape them uparound a room, toobserve in different lights. In a livingroom you’ll want the colours to work inboth daylight and artificial light, whereas in bedrooms and dining roomsit is more important that they lookattractive at nighttime.Take care withcolours that are on the edge betweentwo different shades, as these changemore than any others in different lightconditions, and while this can be dramatic, it may not be quite what youexpect. And be careful to buy the rightundercoat – it really does affect theend result. If the thought of coloureverywhere just sounds a bit toomuch, there are several ways in which itcan be introduced in more subtle ways. You could paint just one wall a shade,

for example, with the others inco-ordinating neutrals.Or how aboutsome beautiful wallpaper, an oversizedstencilled motif or easy-to-apply wallstickers? Alternatively, keep walls whiteor very pale and add colour elsewhere. Changing a duvet cover or atablecloth, for example, will instantlytransform an otherwise neutral bedroom or dining room, while newcushions, vases and pictures will do thesame for a living room. Get handy andpaint a chest of drawers or a side table,or make a loose cover for a sofa orchair: think laterally and this is where, for not too much effort and expense, it’spossible to ring the changes and makecolour work creatively for you.

It’s as simple as black and white.

Pam Ferris, well-known for her roles asMa Larkin in the ITV series The DarlingBuds of May, and on the big screen asMiss Trunchbull in Matilda and AuntMarge in Harry Potter and the Prisonerof Azkaban, has been a regular shop-per at Elham Farmers’ market sincemoving to the village.

“I love shopping at Elham Farmers’Market, buying the fresh local produceand meeting up with the producers andwith neighbours. I think the market isa great local resource and a fantasticcommunity initiative,” said Pam. Joining her in the limelight at thereopening were four students fromBarton Court School in Canterbury:Bradley Andrews of Elham, CallumBarnes of Littlebourne and KarlThyssen and Alexi Long of Canterbury. They were last heard playing theirdjembe drums in public at last year’s

Canterbury Festival. The djembe is a skin-covered handdrum from Mali which is used to gather people together. The boys have

been playing this unusual instrumentfor just under two years, and welcomethe opportunity of playing in public tocall shoppers back to the market. Market manager Julie Woodgate said:“We are delighted to welcome back allour regular producers, includinganother new television personality, JayPitrola who sells homemade Indianfood under the name Desibox. He hasrecently appeared on Channel 4’s TheSecret Supper Club, but we like tothink that Elham Farmers’ Market discovered him before television.” Other regular producers will be sellingseasonal fruit and vegetables, locally-grown potatoes, traditionally-madecheeses, freshly baked bread, free-range eggs, farm-reared meat, game, chocolate, home bakes, jamsand chutneys, and plants for the garden. Elham Farmers Market isopen on the 2nd and 4th Sundays ofthe month, 10am to 12pm in thecourtyard of the Rose and Crown,Elham. We thoroughly enjoyed ourvisit to the market, and are sure youwill to.

Wish you were a little more efficient when it comes to yourPC? Let Tom be your inspiration...It was our pleasure to visit Oriac HouseLearner Centre in Folkestone to meetTom, aged 95, from Cheriton.

Having read aboutOriac House LearnerCentre and thecourses they offer inThe FolkestoneHandbook, Tom, aretired pharmacist, got in touch with theLearner Centre(OHLC) in Februaryto help him get backto using email andthe Internet. Tom first beganusing a computerafter he retired 30

years ago, but wasnot feeling confident about accessinghis emails and doing research, and asa writer, Tom really enjoys using thecomputer for word processing. During Tom’s first appointment thefriendly staff at the learner centrehelped him regain his confidence byusing the UK Online’s myguide courses. He quickly worked throughthis, enjoying the one-to-one coachingof staff, and was then ready to moveon to using his Hotmail account. Tomreturned during the 50+ ComputerClub which runs on Thursday morningsat Oriac House. During these sessionsthe tutors at OHLC helped Tom to gainaccess to his Hotmail account and re-establish contact with some colleagues from the past. During his working years Tom established a newsletter for people in

the medical profession who were interested in stamp collecting. He hasbrought in copies of these old newsletters, which they could scan andsend to his former colleagues whohave been delighted to hear from him.Tom continues to visit the centre on aweekly basis, where he keeps up withhis emails, research and writing. It was a pleasure for us to meet Tom,and to see what a warm, inviting andwelcoming place Oriac Learner Centreis for anyone who wants to improvetheir skills.

OHLC offers a FREE computer basicscourse for anyone who is not confident in accessing the Internet orin using computers. During thiscourse (which can be taken in one ortwo sessions) learners are guided ona one-to-one basis through the OnlineBasics course. There’s something about big Frenchcars that’s rather cool. They’re notusually huge sales hits in the UK, but acombination of quirky styling and laidback comfort make them attractivebuys. There are some things you’llhave to put up with though: Somehave residual values that lose moneyfaster than Greece, reliability can beslightlydisappointing and some peoplewill laugh at you. But not us – we’llsalute you as you waft by with a whiffof diesel, floating along on a bed of airsuspension. Here,we pick our fivefavourites.Citroen DSBig French carsdon’t get moreiconic than theincredible DS.Citroen sold nearly 1.5m of themduring its 20-year production runbetween 1955 and 1975. It waspacked with futuristic technology suchas self leveling suspension and directional headlights, but it’s thosestylish looks that make it really cool. Adecent DS will cost you around £30know.Renault VelSatisThe Vel Satis wasan undeniablesales flop – even Renault’s top brassadmit it – but that, in our eyes, makesit even more desirable. At launch itsprice put a lot of people off, but wethink the unique design, spaciousinterior and silky diesel engine make ita worthwhile purchase. And the factyou can pick them up for just £2k nowmakes them very attractive!Citroen SMCitroen has a habit of producing wackycars, so when it teamed up withMaserati to build the SM in 1970, the

result was always going to be bonkers. The SM didn’t only look amazing butwas packed with tech, including speed sensitive steering and directional headlights. Maserati tookcare of the engine, slotting a V6 unit under thebonnet, and the French firm sorted the styling – the collaboration resulted in the creation ofa classic.Renault Alpine A610Attempting to take on the Porsche 944with a plastic-bodied Renault was, inhindsight, never going to be a success. But that doesn’t mean the AlpineA160, launched in 1991, isn’t cool. It’sgot all the right ingredients – a 250bhpturbocharged lump positioned in theback, rear wheel drive and sleek looks. Add the fact it had a habit of snappinglike a breadstick on the limit and, in our eyes, it’s evenmore appealing.Citroen C6Here’s a classic in the making. Well, atleast that’s what we reckon. The C6has all the hallmarks of a futureappreciator: Mental looks, sublimecomfort and the usual amount of specification marvels including double-glazing, head-updisplay and clever suspension. But what we reallylove about the C6is the looks –thedramatic nose and unique rearmark it out against German rivals andmakes buying one a real statement.By James Baggott, editor of Car DealerMagazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Case Study 1Mrs. J had heard that if she requiredcare in the future her home could besold to fund it. Knowing she and herlate husband had worked hard all theirlives to own their own home, Mrs. J feltvery strongly that it should pass to herchildren and should not be sold to fundher care.SolutionMrs. J set up an Asset Protection Trustto ring fence her most valuable possession in trust for her children. The trust arrangement allowed Mrs. Jto continue living in the property, tosell and purchase a new property & if necessary release equity. There aremany benefits to the Asset ProtectionTrust, including the avoidance of theneed to obtain a grant of probate, &shielding the property from the threatof being sold to fund long term care inthe future. Mrs. J latterly entered longterm care some years later; since thehouse was put into trust at the correcttime the house was exempt from carecosts.Case Study 2Mr. & Mrs. P were in their nineties andwere becoming increasingly concernedabout what would happen should theirhealth fail and they were to requirelong term care.SolutionMr. & Mrs. P established ProtectiveProperty Trusts within their Wills. Mr. Punfortunately passed away soon afterleaving his share of the house in trustfor their children, but the trustarrangement allowed Mrs. P a full lifetime interest in the property meaning she could sell it & purchaseanother. When Mrs. P latterly requiredcare, the half of the house in trustcould not be used to fund it. It wastherefore protected & eventuallypassed to the children.

Lessons1.If assets are put into Trust at thecorrect time they will be protected2.Never assume it’s too late to plan &protect3.There are different methods of protecting your assets depending onyour personal situation4.It pays to get advice from the rightpeople, it can cost you dear if youdon’tYou may or may not perceive yourselfto be wealthy, but if your total estate isvalued at more than £23,250 (inEngland) you will be required to fundyour own long term care if you requireit in the future. Careful planning canhelp you protect what you have workedhard for, but it is important you act asearly as possible…….. but never assumeit is too late.Jaci Godman Irvine specialises in Wills,Trusts, Lasting Power of Attorney andProbate. Spring Clean your Garden

With the flowers blooming and newleaves appearing on the trees, April isa time when most of us like to have abit of a tidy-up and revitalise the garden for summertime. Whetheryou’re preparing for the growing season, or simply wanting to improvethe look of your garden, we have somegreat ideas to give your green space agood spring clean.Tools of the tradeBefore you tackle your garden, have aquick sort through your tools. Givethem a clean, decide what needs to bereplaced and scrub off any rust, beforerubbing on a little vegetable oil to keepthem in tip-top condition. Check yourmower and hedge trimmer to see if anyblades need sharpening or replacingand throw away any old chemicals cluttering up your shelves, which mayeven present a health risk.Clean your deckingBarbeque season is just around thecorner and if you are doing a bit ofentertaining, you’ll want your deckingto scrub up well. Start by picking a dryday and go over the wood with a stiffbroom or multi-purpose pressurewasher. Now that the deck is free fromany clutter and dirt you can focus oncleaning the wood using a dedicatedproduct, finishing with a good rinse toremove all traces of the chemicals.Patios, paths and rough edgesStart by trimming overhanging grassfrom the edges of your patio, pathwaysand borders, and check to see if anystepping stones have sunk belowground height – if they have, raisethem so that loose soil won’t coverthem when it rains. Brush off any oldleaves from your patio before giving itthe once-over with a pressure washer. If you don’t mind a bit of graft, scrubwith a specialist path and patio

cleaner. Finally, pull out any invasiveweeds from the gaps between the patiostones, and lift up encroaching moss.Get growingThe weather is warming up and now isthe ideal time to cultivate someseedlings. Start off with some tomatoes, sunflowers, salad leaves andchillies, and place them somewherewarm, ready for the sun when summercomes. Clean all your old pots with ascrubbing brush, re-plant your windowboxes and, finally, sit back and enjoy!
