Course DescriptionThe Heart Beat of Cardiology is a premier educational venue for echocardiography in clinical practice. This is held collaboratively with the University of Chicago Medical Center. The program is designed to accommodate the evolving needs of inquisitive attendees.
Topics covered will include basic and advanced hemodynamics, 3-D echocardiography, endocardial/pericardial disease, ischemic heart disease, vascular health, contrast, heart failure, diastolic function, new technologies, and valvular heart disease.
Unique Features: Audience response system to enhance immediate feedback. Easy access to faculty members. One-on-one interaction. Efforts will be made to introduce the clinical applications using new technology, however, there is no hands-on experience provided. Self-assessment questions to gauge outcome.
Teaching Materials/SyllabusAttendees will be provided a link to obtain course materials on the internet and are welcome to bring a laptop or iPad during the learning sessions.
Course Learning ObjectivesUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:• Identify and quantitate valvular heart disease severity, apply current guidelines, and
use the ASE standard for quantification• Apply conventional and tissue Doppler techniques to diastolic function analysis• Interpret stress echocardiographic examinations• Identify and differentiate features of cardiac tamponade, constrictive pericarditis, and
restrictive cardiomyopathy• Evaluate application of contrast echocardiography such as myocardial contrast
echocardiography, pitfalls associated with contrast, and avoiding them in daily practice.
Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course.
Intended AudienceThis program is designed for adult cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, cardiac sonographers, and fellows in training. Participants should have practical knowledge of echocardiography.
CreditCollege of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, designates this live activity for a maximum of 20.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Other Health Care ProfessionalsA certificate of attendance will be provided to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
