Η Πρεσβεία της Ελλάδος στην Οττάβα επαναπροκηρύσσει μια θέση Φύλακα – Θυρωρού, με σύμβαση εργασίας ορισμένου χρόνου, διετούς διάρκειας.

Οι υποψήφιοι θα πρέπει να έχουν συμπληρώσει το εικοστό πρώτο έτος της ηλικίας τους και να μην έχουν υπερβεί το εξηκοστό, να έχουν γνώση της ελληνικής και της αγγλικής γλώσσας και να διαμένουν νόμιμα στον Καναδά (Καναδοί υπήκοοι ή κάτοχοι άδειας παραμονής). Η γνώση της γαλλικής γλώσσας και δίπλωμα οδήγησης θα συνεκτιμηθούν. Στα καθήκοντα συμπεριλαμβάνεται η καθημερινή επιμέλεια της εύρυθμης λειτουργίας της Πρεσβείας.

Παρακαλούνται οι ενδιαφερόμενοι να υποβάλουν ένα πλήρες βιογραφικό, που να περιλαμβάνει λεπτομερώς την εργασιακή τους εμπειρία. The Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society Presentation and Panel Discussion on "Greece's Return to the Markets and Future Prospects" - November 15th The Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society with support from the Embassy of Greece and the University of Ottawa Modern Greek Studies Program will be hosting a presentation and panel discussion on “Greece’s Return to the Markets and Future Prospects” on Thursday, November 15th, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hellenic Meeting and Reception Centre. The event will begin with a presentation by Dr. Michalis Psalidopoulos, Executive Director, International Monetary Fund, Washington, D.C. followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mr. Theophilos Argitis, Ottawa Bureau Chief, Bloomberg News, and featuring Mr. Robert Peck, retired diplomat and former Ambassador of Canada to Greece and Cyprus, Dr. Stylianos Perrakis, RBC Distinguished Professor in Financial Derivatives at Concordia University, Dr. Nicolas Papadopoulos, Chancellor's Professor of Marketing and International Business at Carleton University's Sprott School of Business, and Mrs. Sophia Tsamicha, Minister Plenipotentiary for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Greek Embassy in Ottawa. Eπιτροπή Εσωτερικών Κανονισμών Ε.Κ.Ο. – 20 Νοεμβρίου Η Επιτροπή Εσωτερικών Κανονισμών της Κοινότητας ολοκλήρωσε την επανεξέταση των Εσωτερικών Κανονισμών, όπως της είχε ανατεθεί στη Γενική Συνέλευση τον Μάιο τού 2017 και, για να συζητήσει τις προτεινόμενες τροποποιήσεις, καλεί τα μέλη σε μια συνάντηση την Τρίτη 20 Νοεμβρίου 2018 στις 6:30 μ.μ. στο χωλ του ιερού ναού. Οι Κανονισμοί θα ψηφιστούν κατά την επόμενη Γενική Συνέλευση. Αντίγραφα των Κανονισμών μπορείτε να προμηθευθείτε από τον νάρθηκα του ναού ή και το γραφείο της Κοινότητας κατά τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας.

Epistle of St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10

O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.

Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us,

even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by

grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the

heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable

riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved

through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest

any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

The Gospel Reading: St. Luke: 16: 19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and

who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of

sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs

came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's

bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up

his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father

Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and

cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that

you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but

now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a

great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be

able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him

to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come

into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them

hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead,

they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will

they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

H.O.P.E. Play Group (newborn to 5 years of age): This co-operative and welcoming group meets on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. in the Church Hall. Senior Citizens Association “Taverna Night” – November 6th The Senior Citizens Association will be holding their “Taverna Night” on Tuesday, November 6th at 5:30 p.m., at the Banquet Centre. This will be an evening full of great food, excellent music, and fun times for all. The cost for this evening is $25 per member and $30 per non-member. Philoptochos Bazaar & Bake Sale – November 9th The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society will be holding a Bazaar & Bake Sale on Friday, November 9th from 10:00 a.m. – 4;00 p.m. at the Merivale Bowling Centre (1916 Merivale Road). Thank you to all the ladies who brought baked goods to the Fall Bazaar. We would appreciate your support once again, and ask all members of the Philoptochos to bring some home baked goods to sell for the bazaar at the Merivale Bowling Centre. The Samian, Aegean & Ionian Islands Society Luncheon ~ November 11th The Samian, Aegean & Ionian Islands Society are celebrating the106th anniversary of Samos and other Aegean Islands union with Greece, with a Luncheon at the Banquet Centre on Sunday, November 11th, 2018 following the Divine Liturgy. Adult Orthodox Christian Education & Potluck Meal November 17th Our next Adult Orthodox Christian Education Session will be on Saturday, November 17th starting at 5:15 p.m. in the Church Hall. It will be an opportunity for fellowship, potluck meal and talk by Nicholas Pantelopoulos on “Transfiguration through Byzantine Chant.” Children are welcomed to come since there will be a kids activity/movie. HCO By-law Committee Town Hall Meeting – November 20th The HCO By-law Committee has completed its review of the HCO By-laws as mandated at the May 2017 General Assembly. To discuss the proposed revisions of the By-laws, the Committee is inviting everyone to a town hall on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. in the church hall. The revised By-laws will be voted on at the next General Assembly. You may obtain a copy of the By-laws from the narthex of the church or the HCO office during the week.

The Hellenic Community calls all its members to a General Assembly on Wednesday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m., at the Banquet Centre. Registration will be held from 6:30-7:00 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. We would like to remind you that according to the Community By-laws you must have paid the 2017 & 2018 membership dues in order to have the right to express an opinion and/or vote at the General Assembly.

HCO Elections – December 9th Elections for the 2019-2020 HCO Board of Directors will take place on Sunday, December 9th, 2018. We would like to remind you that according to the Community By-laws you must have paid the 2017 & 2018 membership dues in order to have the right vote. Τhe official announcement and nomination forms were mailed or emailed to the members and are also available from the Church and the Community Offices. We encourage you to submit your nomination form or nominate a person who you believe abides by the canons and regulations of the Greek Orthodox Church and would serve our Community and contribute to the growth and well-being of our Community. Σας προτρέπουμε να υποβάλλεται αίτηση υποψηφιότητας έτσι ώστε να υπηρετήσετε την Κοινότητά μας και με αυτόν τον τρόπο να βοηθήσετε στην πρόοδο και ευημερία της ή να προτείνετε κάποιο άτομο το οποίο τηρεί του Κανόνες και τους Κανονισμούς της Ελληνικής Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας. Το σχετικό γράμμα και οι αιτήσεις υποψηφιότητας εστάλησαν στα μέλη ταχυδρομικά και ηλεκτρονικά από την Επιτροπή των Εκλογών. Αιτήσεις υποψηφιότητας διατίθενται και από τα γραφεία της Κοινότητας και του ιερού ναού. Ερωτήσεις μπορείτε να απευθύνετε στο γραφείο της Κοινότητας στο 613-225-8016 εσωτ. 221. Η προθεσμία υποβολής αιτήσεων υποψηφιότητας λήγει την Δευτέρα, 26 Νοεμβρίου, 4.00 μ.μ.

Facing East

It is customary to pray facing East since Christ is called “the East” and the Sun of Righteousness and justice” (Malichi 4:2).

Origen says that we ought to pray Eastward in order to show that our whole life is oriented toward the darn of the Light of the World: Jesus.

St. Basil writes that in facing East to pray, we show that we are seeking the ancient homeland, the Paradise of God, that God planned in Eden, toward the East.

So it is that our bodies are traditionally buried facing east and not west, the sunrise and not the sunset, the morning and not the night. They are like a vast army looking out for Him, Who was risen, and waiting His call to summon us to the resurrection.

Thus originated the custom of praying facing East, the place of the rising sun, the direction from which the Lord will finally come again (Matthew 24:27). This is why our Orthodox Churches are traditionally built facing East. We pray standing and waiting for the Parousia, the Coming of our Master. We stand, says St. John Chrysostom, because we are ready to walk with Christ, ready to do His work, and joyfully awaiting the Second Coming, the great event that will consummate the union with Him already experienced in prayer and the Eucharist.

Στραμμένοι προς την Ανατολή

Συνηθίζουμε να προσευχόμαστε στραμμένοι προς την Ανατολή αφού και ο ίδιος ο Χριστός ονομάστηκε «Ανατολή» και «Ήλιος της Δικαιοσύνης».

Ο Ωριγένης μάς λέει ότι πρέπει να προσευχόμαστε στραμμένοι προς την Ανατολή για να δείχνουμε ότι όλη μας η ζωή είναι στραμμένη προς το Φως της Οικουμένης: τον Ιησού.

Ο Άγιος Βασίλειος γράφει ότι με το να προσευχόμαστε στραμμένοι ανατολικά είναι σαν και να ψάχνουμε για την αρχαία μας πατρίδα, τον Παράδεισο του Θεού, την Εδέμ, που βρισκόταν στην Ανατολή.

Γι’ αυτό και, κατά συνήθεια, οι νεκροί θάβονται με το πρόσωπο προς τα ανατολικά και όχι προς τα δυτικά· προς το χάραγμα και όχι το ηλιοβασίλεμα· προς τη μέρα και όχι τη νύχτα. Έτσι, μοιάζουν με αναρίθμητο στρατό που ατενίζει τον Αναστάντα Χριστό και περιμένει το κάλεσμα και για τη δική του ανάσταση.

Έτσι προήλθε και η συνήθεια του να προσευχόμαστε στραμμένοι προς τα εκεί που ανατέλει ο ήλιος, αφού από εκεί θα έλθει και πάλι ο Ιησούς (Κατά Ματθαίον 24.27). Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που το ιερό των Ορθόδοξων ναών είναι πάντα στραμμένο προς την Ανατολή. Προσευχόμαστε όρθιοι, λέει ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος, γιατί είμαστε έτοιμοι να βαδίσουμε μαζί με τον Χριστό και να εκτελέσουμε το έργο Του. Προσευχόμαστε και περιμένουμε, όλο χαρά, τη Δευτέρα Παρουσία, αυτό το μεγάλο γεγονός που θα επισφραγίσει την ένωσή μας μαζί Του, μια ένωση που ήδη γνωρίζουμε από την προσευχή και τη Θεία Ευχαριστία.
