The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1103 12 th July 2019 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk Thank you so much to everyone from our school community and the wider Hemel Hempstead community who came in record numbers to support our Summer Fair and Dog Show. Miss May and Mrs Jelley (a parent, and HHSA member) organised such an entertaining, enjoyable and fun day for everyone. More importantly we estimate that the event will have raised over £400 for the Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust, and over £4000 for the School Fund, which is used only for projects which directly support our children. Muggy, humid weather is never helpful, especially if you are either: a. A Year 10 boy wearing a dress, high heels and a wig on a stage lit by hot, bright stage lights! b. A PE teacher trying to remember the last time you had to wear a jacket and tie! This week has seen two humid, but brilliant evening events. Starting on Monday we had a fabulous display of House Drama and Art. The students were given just two weeks to take an obscure literacy stimulus from 1907 and in their breaks and lunchtime, pull together as a mixed age group team to write, rehearse, equip, artistically compliment, costume and perform a drama piece with matching graphic display. The quality was great, the humour even better. The House competition is now getting really close, there is all to play for in the run up to next Friday’s big announcement, which Mr Shaw will get to make to top off a brilliant first year as House events coordinator. Then on Tuesday we had the Sports Awards. It was fantastic to see and celebrate what has been a simply incredible year for our sports teams and individuals. So many records broken across so many sports, one going back to 1965. The evening started with Mr Heward delivering an affectionate and heartfelt tribute to Aiden Foran (many of your will have seen his inspirational video on our Instagram and Twitter Feeds) as he was named key stage 4 and 5 sportsperson of the year, and finished with the key stage 3 sportsperson of the year Ondine Achampong, who this week (news flash!) is flying off to Azerbaijan for Team GB pre-Olympic trials. An incredibly exciting time for a phenomenally talented gymnast. On Monday selected Year 7 and 10 students supported Year 6 pupils from local schools in our MathsLand competition and on Wednesday Year 10 had the rare opportunity to see The Scottish Play, Macbeth, performed in an innovative open air experience at Blenheim Palace. At roughly the same time our intrepid group of explorers touched down in Cambodia for what we hope will be the experience of a lifetime. Next week many more residential and day trips will leave for places as far afield as Berlin, Rome, the Lake District and Hendon(!) as we start Activities week. Finally, can I thank all the parents who have attended awards and prize giving assemblies this and last week. It is so lovely to see you supporting your brilliant children and is a special reminder of what a great community this school is. It means a lot to your children and to us. Junior Wind Band Trip to Adeyfield School

Junior Wind Band visited Adeyfield School which brought students from different schools together. This allowed new members of the band to develop in music. The teachers and sixth formers encouraged and helped the students with the music if they were struggling or couldn’t remember something, all together we managed to complete around three different pieces of music in a short time (with a few sweets in between as well). This shows that if a group come together they can improve their abilities together. In my opinion, this trip was a great idea (especially sweets) and opened up new learning possibilities which helped others improve. I grew in confidence as the day went on and was helped by those around me, giving me more confidence in playing an instrument than I had before. This trip is a great way to improve and if you are interested in improving in a wind instrument (as well as a few exceptions like the bass guitar, drums and xylophone) then I can’t stress enough to you that it’s the best way to do so. The trip really showed the skills of people in Junior Wind Band which is why it makes it an amazing experience and many others would agree with me. This trip was fantastic and fun and I would recommend it to students that are interested in improving their music reading and playing skills.

All Hail Macbeth!

On Wednesday the 10th July, Year 10 students got the exciting opportunity to see a performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Rose Theatre, Blenheim Palace which is a pop up Shakespearean theatre. We, along with other schools, crammed into the standing area just like groundlings of the Globe Theatre would as they prepared to watch a play. Amazing actors, equally amazing costumes, set design and special effects came together in a performance so amazing (and a theatre a little hot). One strike of a drum and the audience fell silent, as the first act commenced and we were introduced to the courageous Macbeth and Banquo, the mysterious witches and a plethora of other characters, all brought to life in front of our eyes by the incredible cast. For the next hour and a half we were taken on a captivating journey true to the original, where even we were involved as the characters routinely marched and mingled amongst us and even splashed the front row with water at one point. At the end of the act, applause flooded the theatre and we left to eat lunch during the 20 minute interval, eager for more. Excitedly, we sat on the floor of the theatre 20 minutes later and waited as the actors talked to us and even asked for students to share their sweets and snacks with them (many of whom said yes). Moments later, the second and final act began, which turned out to be even more spectacular than the first. We sat in awe as scenes of joy, anger, despair and everything in between played out, all building tension. Excitement piqued as a combination of sound, props, lots of fake blood and excellent choreography came together to form an explosive final scene where once again the audience were involved (now as the trees of Birnam wood, shielding the soldiers that snuck around the audience) that was deservedly met with a never ending chorus of applause. This incredible day out left us stunned and enthralled, and will no doubt influence and aid us in our studies of Macbeth next year and in our GCSE exams.

PTA News Next Meeting: Tuesday the 17th of September - Annual AGM followed by general meeting please do join us at 7.00pm in the Library. We are looking for a new chair and vice chair for the end of 2019. If you are interested please do get in touch via the contact details below. We look forward to meeting some new faces next term. A Long Weekend of Events - 5th to 7th July The 5th July was the annual Summer Concert with PIMMS on the patio. The evening was wonderful with perfect weather for a cool drink and fresh air during the interval. We raised money through sales of refreshments plus pre-sale raffle tickets. Thank you so much for your support at this event. On Sunday the 7th it was the bi-annual Summer Fair and Dog Show. There were volunteers there all day from the school and the HHSA and many steps were walked. . The day was a resounding success and we have raised just under £4,000 to go towards funding requests from around the school next year. Thank you all so much for joining us. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of the PTA Team but most especially Donna Jelley and Miss Gail May who both worked their socks off to get this event organised - thank you both!! Watch this space for details of upcoming events during the new school term, including the return of the Christmas Market later on in November! HHSA Contact Email Louisa Lingwood - [email protected]

Getting to School with ArrivaWe appreciate that catching the bus to school for the first time can often raise quite a few questions.

We’d really like to help overcome this challenge and support students by providing all the information on Arriva services and bus passes, as well as guide how to use the bus. Overleaf is a map that shows all of our bus routes in your local community to help you understand which route you need.

Ticket optionsWe have a range of child tickets available to suit everyone from Day tickets for occasional travel to Annual tickets for those travelling everyday. These tickets are available for those under 16 or up to the end of year 11. We have two zones available, Hemel Hempstead for those travelling locally and Orbit for those travelling further afield.

Herts Saver Card – Hertfordshire County Council offer a Saver Card which entitles the holder to half the adult fare on all journeys throughout Hertfordshire.

Find out more at hertfordshire.gov.uk and search for saver card.

Travelling further afield?

How to use the busCatching the bus can be a fun way of travelling to and from school, but it is important to be aware of how to ride a bus in a way that makes everyone’s journey a safe and enjoyable one.

Let people off the bus before you try to board

When waiting at the bus stop stand well away from the road

and show respect for others

Take a seat if there is one free, if not stand and hold on tight

to a handrail

Push the STOP button just before your stop – but

only push it once!

1 Practice taking your journey to school, maybe during the summer so that you know which bus stops to get on and off at

3 Keep your ticket/pass safe – keep it in the same place each time you put it away

If the bus is full, give up your seat to a vulnerable passenger.

Student Travel 2019-20

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The new Academic year is fast approaching. This is the perfect time to find out what travel options are available to you.

At Arriva, there are many options for travelling by bus, and many ways to pay. Arriva would like to take this opportunity to inform you about our Direct Debit payment scheme for Student & Child Scholar Saver tickets – a simple, easy way to pay for travel across local zones and networks.

The Direct Debit scheme allows parents or guardians to pay for the annual cost of a bus ticket, spread over affordable monthly payments. Once this is set up this will keep on rolling for as long as the DD active with no need to renew year after year. There is also no contract & you can cancel at any time if circumstances change.

Not only does the ticket allow travel during school times, but can be used for your child to travel at evenings and weekends too.

It’s a simple process to apply, to arrange your Direct Debit & for further information please follow the link below:

arrivabus.co.uk/ss-hertsessex to ensure delivery of tickets in time for the start of the new school year, we recommend registering by the end of July. Once registered you can select either to receive your monthly pass by post or sent to your child’s mobile phone.

For any queries regarding the scheme, please email: [email protected]

Kind Regards

Student Ticket Team, Arriva Southern Counties
