The 2020-2021 proposed budget maintains support for our students and high-quality academic, athletic and arts programs, while reducing the tax burden on our community members. After working with stakeholders from across the district to present an initial working budget in March, the true severity of the pandemic came to light and we quickly 1.83% increase from the current year’s expenditure plan and includes a property tax levy increase of 1.99%, lower than what the State-issued property tax levy formula the district’s fund balance and reserves to offset increased costs and reductions in state aid. ** The District is proposing a tax levy increase of 1.99% which is lower than what the Property Tax Levy Cap formula would otherwise allow.
Continuing the District’s tradition of investing in and improving its facilities without the need for large-scale borrowing, $1.955 million in capital projects is proposed, and would include the following:
• remedy ongoing maintenance costs and use issues.
• One set of girls and one set of boys student/public use bathrooms at High School West.
• Signal Hill Elementary School foam roof replacement.
• Replacement of Paumanok Elementary School underground fuel oil tank, and gym window repairs.
ESPORTS CLUBSAlso known as “electronic sports”, esports clubs provide a form of competition using video games. Our High School students will have the opportunity to join an esports club beginning this Fall.
MATH CURRICULUMFull elementary K-5 math curriculum update (enVision Math) inclusive of new textbooks for students.
ONLINE AND TRADITIONAL TEXTBOOKSWithin various courses in the Science and Social Studies content areas, online subscriptions will be updated and new traditional textbooks which have been redesigned will be purchased.
ENHANCING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICEAdministrators and teachers will participate in trauma-informed instruction training.
EQUIPMENTInvest in a multitude of equipment items across various non-instructional (i.e. school buses) and instructional
to put up the same or an adjusted budget for a public re-vote, or adopt a contingency budget. If the Board of Education decides to move directly to a contingent budget or if the re-vote fails, an additional $4.2 million would need to be reduced from the 2020–2021 proposed budget. These reductions would include the elimination of capital projects as well as equipment purchases.
