When Christmas Day Is Dawning When Christmas Day is dawning, I wish that I could be

There by the manger cradle, God’s Son, new born, to see.

How kind of you, our savior, for us to come to earth

O may we not by sinning, despise your lowly birth.

We need you, O Lord Jesus, to be our dearest friend.

Your love will guard & guide us & keep us to life’s end.

Something is stirring. ‘Stirring AGAIN, in spite of everything. All the news on earth never sounds new to heaven. All the excuses and postponements on earth never alter heaven’s course. Somehow, some way, even in the darkest, light-short season of all, “Love comes down, and glory shows around!” In spite of everything, Bethlehem happens. The Baby Jesus happens. The Savior happens… and we are glad… Saved. Second-chanced… AGAIN!

The children can’t stop hoping, though we always load them down with lesser gifts. The poor can’t stop waiting, even though we give them less than life requires. The sinful can’t stop praying, though we cover up the sin, or pretend it’s not there. The oldest can’t stop believing, for here is hope-beyond reason and a reason beyond all other imagining.

Something’s stirring AGAIN, in spite of everything. God giving it. Christ delivering it. We ourselves, restless & redeemed, receive it. Christmas. Christmas. Christmas!

What Joy!!!

FLOWERS, WREATHS & ALTERNATIVE GIVING This upcoming Christmas season several opportunities are offered to honor or memorialize loved ones. All dedications will be included in the Christmas Eve bulletins. Please use this form for your designations.

1. In accordance with WUMC’s Allergy Sensitivity Policy our Altar Guild purchased silk poinsettias, 7-stem with a 20” spread, and offers them for sale at $12 each. Orders with payment are due by December 7.

2. Wreaths will be placed on the outside doors of the church and office building. These may be purchased for $17 each. Orders with payment are due by December 7.

3. As an “Alternative Gift”, we suggest a monetary gift in support of Loaves & Fishes (our local Soup Kitchen) or Crossroads Christian Preschool (our local Preschool). Alternative gifts will be accepted thru December 7.

Alternative giving is designed to serve as a way of celebrating the birth of Jesus at Christmas time in lieu of purchasing flowers, sending Christmas cards, or buying gifts. This is an opportunity for you to use your Christmas flower/card/gift money to serve the needy of the world and community. Your gift will be published in our Christmas Eve bulletins and you can tell you friends and family that you have made your donation in their honor instead of purchasing flowers, cards or gifts.

MANY THANKS TO OUR CONGREGATION AND FRIENDS!

The United Methodist Women received several awards at the Annual Fredrick District Meeting that was held on October 11, 2014. We thought we would like to share with you our achievements. We have been declared a Five Star Unit by making donations to: Pledge to Mission, Gift in Memory, World Thank Offering, Gift to Mission and Special Mission Recognition. We were recognized as a Silver Mission Today Unit by completing 14 requirements out of 18. With a new program that the Frederick District just started, we were honored with a certificate for the Diversity Today Unit Program and two ladies were presented with certificates for the Reading Program by reading five books from five different categories - one from each category.

The UMW work very hard throughout the year so we can give to others, but it is because of people in our church and community that we can do this. Through your support, we have made many accomplishments. Thanks to YOU for helping us achieve our goals. Some of the ways you have helped us achieve is by supporting our fundraisers throughout the year such as: Christmas Tea, Boscov's Friends Helping Friends, Pancake Breakfast, Rummage Sale and Script. Thank YOU!

The Covenant Garden project, now finished its fifth season, has as its goal to engage our faith community in service (Be Disciples) to the Westminster community and to address food insecurity. The fresh produce from the garden is provided to the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen and Carroll County Food Sunday food bank.

The garden originators and core-working group is the Monday evening Covenant Discipleship group. Current members include Larry Bohn, Kyler Brengle, David Easto, Linwood Row, and Alan Stottlemyer. Summer 2014 participation in planning and gardening was similar to past years with volunteers logging over 150 hours of effort. Utilizing Lots of Helping Hands website for scheduling and regular emails, all volunteers were kept on track and updated. In addition to the core group above additional volunteers included Peggy Brengle, Ed Davis, Tom Hepler, Sharon Row, Kim Cascio, Kristi & Arnie Vandervalk, and Karen & Rich Gonsman.

We succeeded in growing and delivering in excess of 700 pounds of produce to the soup kitchen with overflow going to the food bank. Our soup kitchen coordinators regularly added available produce to the weekly menus in addition to giving it away. Big hits with the clients were lettuce, green beans and our 166-pound crop of sweet potatoes. Additionally we harvested radishes, onions, cucumbers, peas, squash, peppers and tomatoes. The University of Maryland Extension Service non-profit seed distribution program covered the bulk of our seed needs with special thanks to our church member contact, Melinda Setren. Carol LaFon again provided the sweet potato sets.

We look forward to improvements to our garden that will result from Elliot Hirtle’s Eagle Scout project, some sturdy trellises, and a large rainwater collection and distribution system. While next summer’s gardening is, at the moment, a matter of hope and optimism, we reflect on this past season with thanksgiving and reminders of God’s blessings; the blessings of knowing we helped make other’s lives a little better with fresh food, either through the soup kitchen, Carroll County Food Sunday, or by their picking directly from the garden, and the blessings of those who volunteered, be they church members, their neighbors, or those who stopped by as they traveled the alley behind the office. Please consider being a part of our gardening team for 2015. Be on the lookout for a planning meeting in late February or early March! You may direct questions or get involved by contacting Kyler Brengle.

How did our garden grow?

My name is Elliot Hirtle and I am a member of Boy Scout Troop 395. I am still collecting for my Eagle Project; I will be building a rain water collection system in the back of the church office to provide water for our amazing garden. I know we have a very generous congregation and I would love your help. Catch me between services and after 10am service—or pick up an offering envelope, designated to the project, on the narthex cabinet outside the sanctuary doors. Remember to make your check payable to WUMC with EAGLE SCOUT in the memo line. Thank you for your

ompassionate Needles & Hooks (Formerly Compassionate Knitters)

The Compassionate Needles and Hooks had their first get together on Wednesday, September 10. With some discussion about how small our group was it was decided to reach out to our members who also crochet to see if they would like to join with us to make Prayer Shawls and hats and scarves. We meet on Wednesday from 1 – 2:30 pm in the church library. Our Prayer Shawls go to the CHC and Dove House and our hats and scarves are made for different organizations. If you would like to knit or crochet something at home and donate, that too would be truly appreciated. Don’t worry if you do not know how to knit, we will be happy to teach you the basics. Please call me if you have any questions. Dot White 410-346-7646

The MOPS ministry is off to a wonderful start! We have about 20 mothers involved at this point between the day and evening groups. One problem that we are experiencing is the lack of people to run the MOPPETS program. This program is only offered for the day

group and it is what the children attend when the mothers are involved in discussion and fellowship with other women. MOPPETS workers would be with the children in the Nursery and the 2 year old Sunday School Room from 9:30 to 11:30 on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. Activities would be prepared and snack provided for the children. We have 4 more meetings left for this calendar year so if you're interested in being involved in this ministry please contact Diana Fritz at 410-871-4074 or [email protected].

Blood Drive

Coordinator After many years of volunteering to coordinate and help at our church blood drive, Dot White will be following other paths in our church. Historically, we have held two blood drives each year. Dot will be happy to share the details of how our blood drive works (and she would still like to help on the day of the blood drive).

Give Dot a call at 410-346-7646 for more info on this twice-a-year ministry opportunity!

SCRIP Gift Cards are on sale every Sunday morning at the UMW table in the narthex. Please make your checks payable to UMW. Gift cards ordered one Sunday will be ready to be picked up the following Sunday. Each time you place an order your name will be entered in a drawing to be held once a month for a $10 gift card. Proceeds will be given to mission projects in December.

You are cordially invited to attend the annual Preschool Christmas Pageant on Thursday,

December 18th at 9:30am in the church sanctuary. Come see a living nativity and hear joyful

songs sung by the 4 Year Old Preschool Class.

It is sure to be:

A

Precious Moments

Christmas “Christmas is the gift of love that came to us from

up above.

For long ago in Bethlehem a star arose above

the land.

Little angels came to earth to sing the news of Jesus’ birth.

The shepherds heard their song of joy and went to see the baby boy.

Wise men saw his wondrous star and made their journey from afar.

They brought him gifts of spice and gold that light-filled day so long foretold.

Now Christmas is a time to share the love of Jesus everywhere.

A time when we can laugh and sing and thank the Lord for everything.

So when you think of snowy nights with sleigh bells, trees, and Christmas lights….

Above all else remember, too, God sent his gift of love for you.”
