PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Happy February! This month brings us many interesting events in our lives. It starts out with Punxsutawney Phil predicting our weather, Su-per Bowl for the football fans, Valentine’s Day - a time to tell the im-portant people in our lives how much we love and appreciate them, a couple of president birthdays and Leap Day! And I thought Christmas time was busy.

We had a great start to the new year with Ramona teaching us how to tackle watermelon, peaches, pears, plums and grapes all on one paint-ed piece. It is amazing to me all the different surfaces that get chosen to put the same pattern on. All different yet the same.

We had our first Chapter meeting with all the Board members provid-ing the latest updates on membership, programs, seminar and treas-ury. Susan presented the 2020 budget which the members voted on and approved.

We have two painting opportunities this month. Our February class is just around the corner and brings us painting a beautiful cardinal by Karen Ortman reminding us it is still winter, and we have the conven-tion in Las Vegas. Who is going? I am for a whole week… so hopefully I will have the opportunity to see you there whether in class or on the trade floor.

Only one more month until our Mystery Paint In is revealed. This com-mittee lead by Charlotte and Ramona has worked very hard to bring you a fun ‘Member Appreciation Day’ and I think this one will not dis-appoint. Come ready to have an enjoyable time.

As a chapter we were looking for another Outreach prospect that as-sists our community. Susan S. found an organization, Interfaith, that provides services to the homeless, veterans and underserved popula-tions in North County. This would provide us an opportunity to aid this organization with respect to supporting their greatest current need of small kitchen and bath items to help those transitioning from a shelter to permanent housing. Please see article for list of items need-ed. If you would like to donate to this cause you can bring these items to the next paint in or call Susan to make drop off arrangements.

Volunteer opportunity- I need three people to perform an audit of our financial books. Please let myself or Susan know if you would have a few hours to donate.

Sadly, at our January paint- in we were made aware of the news that Sue Bond had passed away in Alabama. Sue had so many long time dear friends in our decorative painting industry. She was a teacher, shop owner, two-time president of our chapter, chairman of many of our Mystery Paint ins and Christmas parties and most of all a beautiful paint-er. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers at this time.

NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) A big thank you to Ramona for the stunning still life she taught in January. Her ability to gently move for-ward while allowing each painter their own pace, is her gift. It is always a treat to paint with her. Thank you to all who came to paint! We look forward to great attendance as the year moves on. There are so many beautiful projects on the horizon. The program calendar will be available at the Mystery Paint In. Also, see page 12 for photos.

February 8 class: Precious Visitor Our final project from the Nov 2018 vote will conclude with a Precious Visitor cardinal being taught by Ka-ren Ortman. The cardinal sitting against a snowy background really sets off the vivid red in the bird. Paint this on a canvas or project piece of your choice. Patterns are available

March 14 class: Mystery Paint In Mystery Paint in is FULL! We are all waiting for a great day, thank you Ramona and Charlotte.

April 18, 2020: Remember this is the third Saturday due to Easter. Our first project for the 2020 calendar is Butterfly Colors created by Cindy Smith and painted on a wood palette available hobby and art stores. The colors are vibrant and playful. A great piece to begin the new calendar. Patterns are available

A note for the Bobbie T. class in May. Programs prepared 30 kits for those interested in completing the project as de-signed. The cost of the kit is $8. If you signed up to receive a kit, we would like you to pick it up at the February or March paint in, it’s a lot to haul around.

Patterns are available

Artist’s Loft Oval Palette with Knives Michaels # 10334662

My stash palette—similar but different enough to require adjustments—a little too oval

Editor’s Note regarding the Palette surface for Cindy Smith’s April 18 Butterfly Colors Class: I discovered that there is no standard “palette” shape. For me, the pattern was going to require some adjustment above and beyond resizing to get it into the shape of the palette from my stash. Initially feeling lazy, I got online and found palettes of all kinds of shapes. The Artist’s Loft Oval Palette from Amazon or Michaels appears to be almost the exact shape of Cindy’s piece. It is in limited quantities at the Michaels Escondido and Vista stores and fully stocked in Oceanside — according to the website. It is $8.49 at Michaels. It is $9.99 on Amazon. I’ve decided that I’m going to use my stash palette, but I just wanted to give everyone the benefit of what I learned…..Leslie

February is the shortest month of the year. The month is named for the Latin word februum which means purification. Together with January, it was the last of the months added to the Roman calendar. It is also the only month to be affected by the leap year which contains an additional day to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year. A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366 days, with the extra day designated as Febru-ary 29. February 29 is a date that usually occurs every four years, and is called leap day. This day is added to the calendar in leap years as a corrective measure, because the earth does not orbit the sun in precisely 365 days. 2020 is a leap year. February might be the shortest month of the year, but it's chock-full of beloved national holidays from Groundhog Day (February 2) to Valentines Day (February 14) to Presidents Day. In addition to Groundhog Day, which according to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. February 2 also celebrates National Hedgehog Day, National Tater Tot Day, National Ukulele Day, and Super Bowl Sunday where I’ll be glued to my tv hoping the Kansas City Chiefs win while munching on hot wings, guacamole and chips and quaffing an ap-propriate beverage or two. February 5 celebrates National Shower with a Friend Day along with World Nutella Day, preferably not doing both at the same time. There is National Pizza Day celebrated with National Toothache Day on February 9. Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, was born February 12, 1809. George Washington was born February 22, 1732. When I was growing up we celebrated each of their birthdays and didn’t have to go to school on those days. That changed with The Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an Act of Congress that amended the federal holiday provisions of the United States Code to establish the observance of certain holidays on Mondays. The Act was signed into law on June 28, 1968, and took effect on January 1, 1971. Officially known as Washington’s Birthday, Presidents Day is an American federal holiday that takes place on the third Monday in February. This year it will be on February 17. But we gotta say, for a holiday which appears to be a simple observance of a president’s birthday, it sure does get compli-cated! For example, some states call it President’s Day (note the singular possessive apostrophe) or Washington and Lincoln Day. Valentine’s Day really did start as a feast day for St. Valentine, the patron saint of love and affection. But thanks to Chaucer and his tales, the day became infused with the romance, tension, and drama of the English imperial court. Et

voila, 200 years later, it means we’re buying chocolates (Sees Assorted Dark Chocolates is my favorite!) and making reservations for very ex-pensive meals. February 14th celebrates this special day of love. 13% of Americans would rather receive diamonds than chocolate on Valentine’s Day. Nope, I’d rather have chocolate. 9% of Americans buy candy or flowers for themselves on Valentine’s Day. That’s one way to be sure you get just what you want. Rounding out the holidays are National Drink Wine Day, National Muffin Day, National Sticky Bun Day and National Margarita Day. Fortunately these are not all celebrated on the same day! Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent is observed

on February 26.

As we get another year older in 2020, we may find our bodies not cooperating like we wish. When I go to the doctor they always ask, “have you fallen in the past year? How many times?” Falling is a big risk for us “seniors”. So we end up with bruises and maybe stitches or even have to have surgery to repair broken bones. If you know someone in the chapter who is in need of some cheering up, either from falling or an illness, please call me (858-576-7163 – leave a message but no texts to this landline) or send me an email ([email protected]) and I will send them a card on behalf of chapter —- Jeanne Robert

MYSTERY PAINT-IN 2020 (MPI)

Hi Ladies,

We are excited for the upcoming March MPI event. If you are attending here are some things to know.

Please:

Carpool with a painting buddy or have someone drop you off and pick you up at the end of the event. Parking spaces are limited at the mobile home park.

Leave your gigantic painting trolly at home and bring a smaller bag with the essentials listed below. There will be 40 painters plus the commit-tee, so we will need room to move around and not trip over stuff.

Bring basic painting supplies: palette paper, water container, paper tow-els, apron, stylus, favorite base coating flats (#6-16), #10 flat in good con-dition, favorite shading brush, #1 or #2 liner brush, your favorite stipple brush (#4, 6 or 8), tape, small pair of scissors, and a Sharpie.

Bring $$$’s for raffle tickets.

We will provide water, coffee, and tea along with a light breakfast, lunch, and dessert. Did we mention that there will be des-sert?

Come ready to have a fun painting day with your PHP friends and our mystery teacher.

See you soon!

SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR 2020

NO. I have not lost my marbles. At least not all of them, yet. I am writing to ask you to think about submis-sions to the San Diego County Fair (2020) now, while you are painting and creating wonderful pieces for

yourself or as holiday gifts. Go ahead. Give them away, but with the caveat that the recipient let you “borrow” the piece back for a few weeks over summer so that you can enter it into the fair. Catch my drift? You might also want to think about furniture. Do you have anything in your stash that could be considered furniture? Paint it! Enter it! There were No, None, Zip, Zero, Nada pieces entered into the painted furniture category this year. The Home & Hobby people even created a special display area up front and were dis-mayed when there were no painted furniture entries. Actually, there were not very many painted entries at

all. ☹ Let’s all work on showing San Diego what a wonderful thing tole & decorative painting can be this next time around. Charlotte Hicks

Susan Bond 1950—2020

As most of you know, Sue Bond passed away on January 10, 2020 from complications of an infected colon that couldn’t be operated on because of her weak condition and declining health. Depression and hopelessness took such an iron grip on Sue’s life. We had all firmly wished that moving to her daughter Allison’s would lift her up, albeit probably slowly, but at least the very physical pres-ence of family might serve as a watchful eye on her safety and health issues. There are pieces of memories of Sue within all our hearts. She was so generous with

her talent. She helped many struggling to learn and master painting techniques and painted so many beautiful pieces for PHP raffles. She painted works of art for appreciation contributions to chapter board members and served as an officer for several years, including VP Programs. Sue was an invaluable liaison with artists nationwide. Sue spent years taking care of her family in crisis. She closed her shop (that she had put her heart & soul into) to take care of her son Peter. He moved into the small apartment with her in RB. He had ALS and had become fully depend-ent on her. She spent the next several years taking care of him as his disease worsened... including renting a handicap van once a month or so, (at no small cost) spending an entire day to drive him up to a UC Medical facility for a trial treatment plan. His bed had a huge sling type of machine attached to it so she could hook him up to help lift him out of bed, often in the middle of the night. To us, it looked like an impossible task. Sue never complained. She had to call the Fire Dept from time to time when she was unable to move him. She spent her days & nights caring for him and keeping him company. She made home cooked meals for him and they watched movies together. It was gut-wrenching for us to see Peter's decline, but Sue made his life worth living until the very end. After Peter had passed away, she moved in with her brother near Sacramento. Their mother's health was failing, so Sue moved in to take care of her mom so her brother could continue working. She stayed a couple of years until her mother passed away. Then she moved back to SoCal into her mobile home. One late Thursday afternoon she talked about her battle with her son’s illness and death. She told us she never could have made it through those dark days without her painting friends. Making final goodbyes with close friends is one of life’s great challenges. I know we will all miss her in our own ways. I know I will. Teri Hayes, Jeanne Robert, & Irene Pruess

Palomar Heritage Painters January Board Meeting 2020

Date: January 10th, 2020 Location: Carol Voyles Home Meeting called to order at 9:40 a.m. by President Carol Voyles. Board Members present were: Carol Voyles, Linda Eastom, Leslie Pilcher, Debi Stivers, Linda Silvasy, Susan Schoeppner Budget: Susan presented the 2020 budget to the Board based on feedback from the members at the budget meeting held January 4,2020. Susan will compile a financial Statement every month and she will update our budget every 6 months. It was mentioned that the Committee Chairmen should not hold checks from members more than 2 months. November and December checks will be held until January. It was suggested that Raffles and Hospitality be in their own category in the Budget. We will have a motion to approve the 2020 Budget at the next General meeting to the members January 11,2020. Susan mentioned we must do everything we can to stay on Budget.

Chapter meetings: We will have 4 General Chapter meetings this year.

Membership: The Membership Roster is being compiled for 2020 once the membership drive is over. The contents were discussed, and updates noted. Leslie will ensure the entire chapter bylaws will be included in the back of the book. A PHP Honorary Member certificate was discussed.

General Raffles: There was a discussion on what months to have raffles. They will be advertised in our Calendar of Events or the newsletter. Linda C. and Marilyn W. proposed 5 general raffle months for 2020- Feb, May, July, Sep-tember and Nov. The Board proposed Feb, May, June, Oct and Nov. There will be 6 raffle prizes for each raffle, plus 2 or 3 members will donate a raffle. Donation recognition will continue, and tags will be used to put the members name on their donation. The five-ticket reimbursement system will be suspended currently to the members for raffle donation. It may be reinstated later in the year at the discretion of the raffle committee heads.

Garage Sale: The Board discussed trying something new with regards to the members being able to sell their own stash and/ or donation items. The name will change from Garage Sale to Market Place. It was decided that members are responsible for their own items for sale or donation. Two scenarios were decided:

1. Bring in free items to give away. These items can be brought in and placed on the tables during any month except Project Voting month.

2. Bring in items you want to sell, and member keeps the money. Put tags on all items for sale (name and price) and member is responsible for collecting the money. This can occur during the months of Jan, April, July and Sept. This will also include if you want to sell items and donate the proceeds to the club.

General guidelines:

You are responsible for handling your own items. Please come prior to class start up and set your items out on the ta-bles. If you are selling- place your name and price on the item. After the teacher is finished teaching the class remove items from the table that don’t sell or are not wanted. If items do not sell or are wanted after two sale dates, discard the items. Call Linda Camp or Marilyn Winder if you have a donation that could be used for Raffles.

Programs: Debi Stivers and Linda Silvasy stated there will be 7 regular Paint-Ins and 3 Special Events in 2020.

What surfaces will Programs be providing to members for our Paint-Ins and where can we acquire the surfaces was discussed.

Seminar: Linda Silvasy has been in contact with Rosemary West and things are moving along nicely.

The Board discussed patterns and wood pieces for the “Rosemary West” Seminar to be held in August.

Two days one project each day is desired.

Meetings: There will not be a Board meeting in February. General Meetings will be in January, May, July and November (Elections)

General: The keys to the Community room need to be redistributed to the new chairmen who will need them.

Meeting was adjourned by Carol Voyles at 12:03 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Eastom, Secretary

Interested in downsizing your stash? Want to give others the chance to paint items you don’t want anymore? Then the Marketplace is for you.

We have set up some general guidelines and time frames to follow for giveaways or priced to sell items. Here are two scenarios with the guideline rules. 1. Bring in free items to give away. These items can be brought in and placed on the tables during any month except Project Voting month. 2. Bring in items you want to sell, and member keeps the money. Ensure all the items contain a tag (name and price) and member is responsible for collecting their own money. This can occur during the months of Jan, April, July and Sept. This will also include if you want to sell items and donate the proceeds to the club. General guidelines: You are responsible for handling your own items.

Setup: Please come prior to class start up and set your items on the designated tables. If you are selling- place your name and price on the item.

Payments: Arrange payment before, after class or lunchtime with your buyers.

Cleanup: After the teacher has finished teaching the class, remove items from the table that haven’t sold, or free items not taken.

Call Linda Camp or Marilyn Winder if you have a donation that could be used for Raffles
