A Least Favorite Gospel: The Winner Is….
I’d agree with T. Denise Anderson, Presbyterian minister, that today’s sample from Luke’s Sermon on the Plain (His version of Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount) is not a favorite within the three year Sunday scripture cycle to digest and appreciate. To really “hear” and take to heart Jesus’ teaching – including among the milder challenges - to “do good to those who hate you … pray for those who mistreat you … stop condemning” puts you deep into His Kingdom territory. You will need more than a visa to get in here. To travel this extraordinary route you need a strong dose of God’s grace, God’s essence to “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principals of Nonviolence offers some practical tools for Jesus’ disciples to absorb His teaching. I believe they give insight into living out of today’s Gospel even if you do not completely buy into a pure non-violent theology. Let me sample two of these perspectives, namely, for courageous people nonviolence is an aggressive way of life spiritually, mentally and emotionally, and nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice not people. First, nonviolence as an aggressive way of living spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Sr. Dorothy Stang, an American-born nun, had worked for decades among exploited Brazilian farmers. Her work marked her as an enemy by some of the ranchers and loggers. As recounted by Robert Ellsberg, in 2005 while Sr. Dorothy was on a road to meet with some farmers, “her way was blocked by two hired gunmen who asked whether she carried any weapon. In reply she produced her Bible and began to read the Beatitudes: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit … blessed are the peacemakers.’ And then they shot her.” Sr. Dorothy instinctively lived and died in the Gospel. I ask for the grace to live at least some of our Gospel with a sliver of her spiritual, mental, and emotional intensity. Second, nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice not people. Today’s toxic atmosphere seems to relish demonizing anyone who disagrees with our viewpoint. But defeating injustice not people means a disciplined openness to understanding the other person without seeking to defeat or humiliate those with opposing views. Demonizing others tends to polarize and encourage digging in rather than to seek common ground or, if that is not possible, than to respectfully agree to disagree on the matters in question.
Christ’s high expectations end game is too release us into a freedom to receive the full measure of His overflowing love. In the Lord’s Overflowing Blessings,

Redeemer, who came among us to show us the way to eternal

Unprotected: a Pope, the Pill
and the Perils of Sexual Chaos
This recently produced documentary is being shown
on Sunday, March 17th, at Our Lady of Lourdes
Parish, 4640 N. Ashland. The film looks at the
devastating effects of the sexual revolution, and how
it negatively impacts women. It tells how fifty years
ago, Pope Paul VI predicted the results of a culture
that disregards the teachings of the encyclical
Humane Vitae.
Several well-known commentators including
Christopher West, who often discusses Theology of
the Body, are featured. Written by Don Johnson, a
former Relevant Radio host, it is distributed by St.
Ignatius Press.
The showing is preceded by the Rosary at 3:30 pm
and followed by refreshments at 5:15 pm.

Urge Congress to Stop Infanticide
A Pro Life Alert -- Please call Senators Dick Durbin and
Tammy Duckworth ASAP to urge them to be present for
the vote and to vote for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors
Protection Act (S. 311) scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25.
This bill states that infants who are born alive after an
abortion attempt should be given the same degree of care to
preserve their life and health as would be given to any
other newborn baby.
