This past Thursday I attended the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Paul. It is at this Mass that the Holy Oils (Chrism, Catechumen and Sick) which will be presented on Holy Thursday were blessed by the Archbishop. It is also at this annual event where the members of the Presbyterate (Priests) publicly renew their promises that were made at ordination. This annual event is a precursor to the start of Holy Week, which we begin today with the celebration of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion.

Today, we begin our Liturgy with the Blessing of the Palms that will adorn our homes this year emulating those faithful who welcomed Jesus into the Holy City of Jerusalem shouting “Hosanna in the Highest, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” The sadness of this event shows us the weakness and fickleness of human faith as these same people will be on the steps of the Praetorium shouting “Crucify Him!” a few days later. Today’s Gospel is the story of the Lord’s Passion as recorded by the Evangelist Mark. Our Triduum Liturgies (Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday and the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil) follow these events of the last day’s of Jesus’ life before His resurrection on Easter Sunday. The words of the passion narrative are so sorrowful, yet powerful that they speak for themselves. Because of this, today is the one Sunday of the year that the Roman Missal gives the priest the option to omit the homily after the reading of the Passion. It has been my custom to do so as I prefer having a short time of silence to pray and reflect on what we have just heard and quite honestly, I can not say anything that will add to this - today is a day where less is best. I would like to invite you to join us for our Holy Week Masses and commemorations. The schedule is on the front page of the bulletin. As a reminder, there is no morning Mass on Thursday or Friday. Wishing you and your family a blessed and Holy week ahead as we prepare to celebrate the most sacred time of our faith. Peace, Fr. Cole

Meet Your Teachers. Karen Hail, Music. My teaching career began at St. Joseph’s School in West St. Paul. Over the past 19 years, I have taught music in Europe, Eagan, Woodbury, and White Bear Lake. While home raising my four children, I began Karen’s School of Music teaching piano lessons after school. I am now celebrating my 25th year.

I have been interested in music from a young age, playing Ave Maria by ear when I was four years old. Every Christmas my mother would dress up all eight of her kids and 14 cousins to act out the Nativity and sing Christmas carols. Music has always been part of my life. My own children all sing and lead worship at church. On any given Sunday, as I’m leading my congregation in song, I know that each of my children is leading worship at their churches and colleges. How blessed am I!

Contact the school office or visit our website for more information: 651-437-2644, [email protected], sjb-school.org. School Stations of the Cross on Monday, March 26th at 3 pm in St. John Church. If Jesus destroyed sin, why are sins still with us?

Peter Long owned a large and successful business. When his son wanted to work for his father, Peter gave him a job, working in maintenance. He started him at the bottom so that he would better appreciate what it takes to run a business well. More importantly, Peter wanted his son to understand the whole business, and contribute to it, not just cash in on his father's success. They would both rejoice in a job well done. We are the children of God, heirs of the Father's business, which is life. The struggle is between good and evil and the greatest weapon of evil is death. It is final, the end of hope and all possibility of change. Jesus must destroy death so that life, eternal life, might be possible. That is why Jesus dies: to take on sin's weapon and destroy it by his resurrection. It was not to satisfy God's sense of justice, but to meet sin on its own terms and defeat it. If sin triumphs in the death of Jesus, it is only for a moment. The final word will yet be spoken. Since we are heirs and coworkers with God, ours is the struggle with the remnants of evil, its last desperate attempt to overcome good. Like Jesus, we are about the Father's business in our daily life, carrying the message of salvation to everyone. We are strengthened in our struggle and come to realize the great gift of life with which we are graced. It is our hope that one day we will rejoice with the Father in a job well done!
