The History of Bachata
The History of Bachata By: Alice-Elena Akinsola
Description/HistoryBachata is a genre of music and dance that originated and is very popular in the Dominican Republic. It is also very popular in other Spanish countries, such as, Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Australia. Bachata is used to express and celebrate the creativity of the too-long-denied working peasant and African roots of Dominican identity. There are many instruments used to play this type of music such as the; guitar, bass, bongos, and guira. Usually Bachata music is focused on romance, unrequited love, or heartbreak. Bachata appeared in The Dominican Republic in early 1960s, but didnt get popular in Santo Domingo until the 1990s.When dancing to bachata it is loosely described as a sexy shuffle from side-to-side, preformed in either open or closed position with four steps in each direction ending with a foot tap, leg jerk, or a unique pop.
