It is in our province to determine the exact status of [a] cripple—his possibilities for recovery, his chances for assuming a normal place with his fellows in life.

"Know Then That Every Soul is
Free" (early 19th-century hymn)
Know then that every soul is free
To choose his life and what he’ll be;
For this eternal truth giv’n,
That God will force no man to heav’n.
He’ll draw, persuade, direct him right;
Bless him with wisdom, love and light;
In nameless ways be good and kind,
But never force the human mind.
--Elias Smith and Abner Jones, Hymns Original and Selected for
the Use of Christians (1805)
