    Todays' gloves are considered by many to besimply protective hand coverings used and

    only worn in cold weather. But for severalcenturies gloves were symbolic garments,worn for their usefulness and decorativepurposes besides that as protective clothing.

    It was in tenth century Europe that thegloving industry started. Take for exampleBritian whose gloving industry started in theeleventh century, gloves were made fromlocal deer, sheep, or imported kidskins andiron gloves were used by Military and Knights

    in warfare as a way to protect their handsand to keep them warm.

    The gloves had asymbolic meaning in theknight's circle. Thehanding of a glove meantthat the knight became avassal of a person whohad given him a glove. Ifa glove was thrown underfeet it meant a duel. Theexpression challenge to

    a duel was used till theend of the 18-th century.But receiving a glovefrom a woman had a

    The gloves appeared in Germany andScandinavian countries in the 13-14-th cent.

    In the 17-th century knitted pants appearedand knitting machine was invented, soknitted gloves were in a wide use.

    By the end of the 17-th century the gloveswere necessary with clothes.

    They become a highly decorated accessory,not only for women but for men too, withslashing, gems, pearls, lace, embroidery,tabs, ribbons and elaborate cuffs. Queen

    Elizabeth enjoyed a wardrobe featuring manypairs of gloves, some knitted and someperfumed. King Henry VII also had awardrobe that included highly decorated

    French masters were leaders on the glovesmarket at the beginning of the 17-th centuryto the end of the 18-th century.

    The French masters opened of theirtechnological secrets to the whole Europeunder the influence of Napoleon.

    The technology of producing gloves becameunbelievably complicated.

    For example, in the 18-th century it was verydifficult to order beautiful gloves. Theleather was bought in Spain, cutting-out wasmade in France, sewing and decoration were

    made in England.

    Men's gloves were always shortbut the length of the women's

    gloves depended on the lengthof the sleeves.

    In the 19-th century the rulesfor ideal gentlemen wereformulated. According to theserules a real gentlemen had to

    change his gloves six times aday.

    In 1807 an Englishman James Winterinvented a machine for sewing gloves.

    The rubber gloves were patented.

    In the beginning of the 19-th century Russiabegan to produce kid-skin; it's very mild andsoft leather. The gloves that were made fromit were thin, elastic and glimmering.

    By the middle of the19-th century the gloves

    were made by hand.

    Then a special machine for pressing theedges of the production was invented. Theseedges were held tightly and firmly and wereunnoticeable. It was difficult to put on true

    kid-gloves. So, they put them on at home.The rules of etiquette demanded to weregloves in public.

    In the 20-th century the industry of glovesproduction was dramatically changed. It wascaused by sharp social changes, especially

    for the last 30 years. That's why this field ofproduction was on the edge of dying.

    The gloves were a symbolof elegance and a symbolof a true lady, who worethe gloves, a hat andpants the whole year.

    Sunburned hands meantbelonging to a workingclass in 1930-s years. Thetop of it was in 1968. This

    accessory was recognitionof a bourgeois symbol, asymbol of officialrelations, riches and

    hypocrisy.

    The gloves industry faced with a deep crisis

    in the days of triumph of simple clothes andjeans.

    At the beginning of the 80-s the revival oftrue gloves began and they returned to theshop-windows as an important accessory offashion industry.
