Preliminary Research For our project we did extensive research on steampunk. Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that often features elements of fantasy. It is closely related and mixes in elements of cyberpunk. It sometimes contains alternate reality/history where failed technologies flourish. This is the path we decided would be most interesting to work with. We created an alternate reality where gasoline powered vehicles were replaced by steam powered ones due to the corruption of one man. The entire idea to work with this genre came from a picture of cool steampunk goggles (which Kenneth wears). Each of us knew what the genre was but not enough to base the entire project on it, thus starting our research. We started looking at the style of clothing steampunkers would normally wear in order to get an idea of how to shape our characters. We found that steampunk apparel is influenced by the Victorian era when the industrial revolution was at its height and introduced steam powered machines. Since workers are a huge part of the story and the industrial revolution relied on workers, we modeled our characters with a worker's uniform and then transformed it into a school uniform. The clothing also inspired us to shape other characters such as the manager. Though we didn't actually create an outfit for him, we took inspiration from steampunk style top hats, masks, and hair in order to better visualize the character's personality. We looked at a few factories via Google and other various sources but our location scouting did not take too much research since Kelly already knew of a location that was perfect. However, we did have to look at factory floors to get a realistic idea of what the interior of a factory looks like. We agreed on a factory floor that was very similar to the one in the 2009 movie “Extract”. We took the idea of the boss' office overlooking the floor, which is a vital part of the story, from that movie. We also had to do some research on train stations. Since the story takes place in a steampunk alternate reality, we wanted the train to be powered by steam as well, even though we didn't specify this in the story, therefor we needed a train station that appeared different than modern train stations. We looked up train stations that were used when steam trains were prominent. Luckily there was a building and a dock near the actual factory that looked like an old train station when photographed at the right angle. We researched cars as well. We looked at different gasoline powered cars and models of steam powered cars and the differences between them. We especially took notice of the engines, since that would be the main difference. We did this just to get an idea of the entire concept of switching from gasoline to steam cars. We also took inspiration from steampunk music even though we are only using one song in the sample soundtrack (Winky in “C” Minor by Dr. Steel). Since the genre is still relatively new, the music is very diverse. We listened to many bands that were considered steampunk and tried to incorporate the feel of the music into the mood of the story. Most steampunk music is disconcerting, adding in many sounds that are uncommon in other genres such as the ticking of a clock. One artist in general, Dr. Steel, has very turbulent music. The songs often start out innocently and then suddenly becomes dark. This structure is mimicked a few times in the plot, when the lights are turned on and when the explosion occurs.

The History of Steam - Takes place in a steampunk alternate universe.

Three teenagers, twins Caroline and Nicolas and Caroline’s best friend Kenneth are standing in front of their teacher's desk. The teacher, Ms. Wilkins, who is sitting behind the desk looks frustrated. Caroline and Kenneth are telling the teacher that she was wrong about what happened to the old factory in class. The teacher asks them how they know. Caroline pulls out blue prints.

At sunset the teenagers are on a train. Caroline has a small backpack, Kenneth has a leather side bag and Nicolas has various instruments hanging out from pockets in his overalls. They are all wearing their school uniform. Kenneth pulls out a map and shows the others the stop they have to get off at. They arrive and see the old, rusty factory. There is a small lake they that they have to walk by. When reach the factory it is dark.

They carefully approach the factory. Kenneth examines the metal handles that are chained together with a padlock. He pulls out a large wrench and hits the lock, breaking it. They enter and Caroline pulls a small flashlight out of her backpack and turns it on. The teenagers peer around the large room and walk between the rows of conveyor belts and machines to a door with a sign reading MANAGER’S OFFICE under the dark window.

They open the door and climb a dark flight of stairs to a small hallway connecting three doors. Caroline turns to the door to the left and goes inside. She pulls open a rusty file cabinet and removes a thick folder. Inside are strange blue prints for cars. Caroline looks them over before stashing them in her backpack.

Nicolas looks around hesitantly before opening the middle door. He takes out his flashlight and turns it on to reveal a long storage room filled with rustic car parts. With a confused look on his face, Nicolas closes the door and joins Caroline.

We see Kenneth in an office with a big desk and a high-backed chair behind it. On the desk there is a name plate with Mr. Wilkins on it. There are huge glassless windows overlooking the factory. He climbs into the chair, folding his hands behind his head. The twins enter, and Caroline goes through the contents of the cabinets. Nicholas walks over to a light switch on the wall and flips it on and an explosion of light fills the factory floor. All of the old bulbs shatter, showering glass on the factory floor.

They are startled and run down the stairs. The trio dashes out of the factory and back to the train station. On the train, Nicolas collapses onto Caroline’s lap and falls asleep. Caroline and Kenneth compare notes and speculate over what they think happened.

They arrive back at their neighborhood and go to their own homes. Kenneth leaps into his bed. Nicholas sleepily lumbers into the bottom bunk while Caroline already tucked herself into the top bed.

We see Caroline’s sleeping face and there is a white flash. She is standing outside the factory by herself. The factory looks newer, the lights are on, and there is heavy machinery noise emitting from it. She runs with enthusiasm into the factory to find it open and filled with workers. She runs up to one of the workers that are just punching in and tries to talk to him, but he won’t talk to her. She tries to talk to a few other people but none of them will. She looks around with a confused look on her face, but suddenly gets a determined smile and runs into another part of the

Page 11: The History of Steam

factory.

Kenneth is standing in front of the factory and enters it bravely. The people he talks to also give him the cold shoulder but he starts yelling. He is grabbed by a bigger man. Kenneth squirms violently, but after a moment stops. He looks around the brightly lit factory and studies the machinery. We see him being taken past the same MANAGER’S OFFICE sign and into the office. The window in the office has glass in it. The boss, a very sharply dressed and lean man with slick black hair, starts to talk to Kenneth.

Nicholas timidly approaches the factory and enters. The workers bump into him as they walk by. He attempts to ask one of them a question but the worker doesn't even acknowledge him. Nicholas observes the work floor and sees a problem with one of the machines. He finds the engineer's room, enters it, and tries to talk to a man. We hear the man call him a stupid kid. With his head hung low, Nicholas exits the room and sadly looks at the workers.

We see Caroline happily chatting with some of the workers and she starts working at the conveyor belt. She asks a worker if she likes her job. The woman turns back to the conveyor belt without answering Caroline's question.

We see Kenneth with a surprised look on his face. ''When are you going to blow up the factory?'' he asks the manager. The manager nods his head towards the windows overlooking the factory and Kenneth looks.

Suddenly a huge explosion occurs inside the factory. Most of the workers are dead. The machines are in pieces and a few are on fire. Debris is everywhere.

Caroline looks over to the woman she was talking to and sees that she is laying on the ground bleeding profusely and not moving. Caroline is bleeding a little and crying as she tries to escape. Nicholas is trapped under a large piece of metal. He screams in pain and goes unconscious

In the manager's office, the windows are shattered. Despite a few cuts, both Kenneth and the boss look fine. Kenneth tells the manager that he is going to report him. The manager tells Kenneth he can't because he struck a deal with the steam companies. The manager takes a metal rod and tries to kill Kenneth. Kenneth escapes. The manager chases him until he exits the factory.

The teenagers are standing in front of the teacher's desk. The teacher tells them that their story is absurd. The teenagers argue with her but she starts shouting at them. They ask her if the manager was related to her and the teacher gives them detention.

1 INT. SCHOOL, MS. WILKINS’ OFFICE - AFTERNOON 1

Three teenagers, twins CAROLINE and NICOLAS and best friend KENNETH stand in front of a desk, behind which sits MS. WILKINS, her hands folded in front of her. The teenagers stand before her, looking slightly rumpled and their hair is singed in several places. The boys are dressed in overalls, Nicolas’ pair has several pockets of sewn into the twill material and Kenneth carries a messenger bag slung over one shoulder. Caroline is wearing an overall style dress and the knees of her leggings are tattered. All of their boots are caked with dried brown mud with dusty tracks trailing across the otherwise pristine carpet. Ms. Wilkins looks the trio over disapprovingly before they continue their story. KENNETH Look, we know what we saw! You were wrong! CAROLINE Yeah, we have proof! Look!

(Pulls blueprint from pocket) See? MS. WILKINS Where... did you find this?

2 INT. TRAIN - EVENING (PREVIOUS DAY) 2

Kenneth, Caroline, and Nicolas sit on a steam powered train. The sky is slightly dimmed, a clear sign that daylight is fading. The teenagers are dressed in the same attire, though they are not yet dirty. Kenneth pulls a train route map out of his satchel and the three crowds together to look at it. KENNETH Looks like we still have a ways to go.

(Points at a square at end route) Seven more stops. CAROLINE

(Groans) That’s like, forever away! I didn’t know it was all the way out of town! NICOLAS

(Looks at Caroline) Are we gonna miss dinner?

Page 13: The History of Steam

CAROLINE Probably, Nic.

(Digs around in her backpack) Here, eat this.

(Hands him a candy bar) NICOLAS

(Looks at the candy, pouting) But mom’s actually cooking... KENNETH

(Ignores both of them) So what do you think we’ll find out there? NICOLAS Well, the history book said it was just a big building. Mentioned something about some weird conception called an ‘assembly line’ or something. People used to build using only their hands and a couple of tools! CAROLINE Don’t be ridiculous, no one can lift a steam engine by themselves. They weigh like, three tons! NICOLAS Well, if the right amount of upward force was applied... CAROLINE Not this again!

The twins continue to bicker for several minutes while Kenneth watches the outside windows, constantly consulting the map. A chime is heard throughout the cabin and the teenagers look up. A soft, robotic, female voice speaks, slowly and distinctly pronouncing every syllable. ANNOUNCER

Now arriving at North Diesel Station. Please exit the train to your right and mind the gap. Thank you for riding the Newcomen Express. Have a nice day. KENNETH

(Prodding Nicolas from behind) Watch your step there, kid. NICOLAS I am not a kid! CAROLINE

(Sighing) Boys...

Page 14: The History of Steam

3 EXT. NORTH DIESEL TRAIN STATION PLATFORM - EVENING 3

The trio walks carefully off the platform and being to follow the nearly invisible cracked pavement that leads off into the distance, wading through the tall grasses.

4 EXT. LARGE LAKE

They walk past a dingy looking lake where fog is beginning to feather off of the surface and into the surrounding high grasses. Caroline picks up a flat stone and skips it across the oily surface of the lake. She jogs to catch up with the boys who have wandered off into the distance.

5 EXT. HORNET MOTOR CAR COMPANY FACTORY - DUSK 5 The teenagers follow the path through high brush and eventually come upon the abandoned factory. The building is huge and covered with soot and some slimy substance and several tall smokestacks tower over the building they are attached to. The sun is setting in the sky behind the factory, slivers of like peeking through the space between the smokestacks. Caroline walks ahead of them to inspect a large padlock and chain barring them from entering the decrepit factory. CAROLINE (Half-shouting)

It’s locked! NICOLAS Looks like we have to go back home. KENNETH (Digs in his side bag and pulls out a wrench) No we don’t. I got this! The chains rustle behind the two boys’ backs and they turn around to see Caroline has somehow broken the chain herself. She looks at them, grinning proudly. CAROLINE

They just broke apart. Probably ‘cause they’re so old and rusty. KENNETH

(Returns the wrench to his bag looking disappointed)

Fine. Let’s go inside.

Kenneth walks over to the broken chain and pulls it off of the door handles. The scraping and jingling of the chain echoes in the empty fields around them. Kenneth grabs one of the door handles and pulls and the door slides open a few

Page 15: The History of Steam

inches with a loud shrieking sound. The twins jump in surprise and Caroline moves to the other door to help him. They finally get the doors open just wide enough to slip inside the old factory.

6 INT. HORNET MOTOR CAR CO. FACTORY ASSEMBLY LINE - DUSK 6

Caroline, Nicolas, and Kenneth walk carefully into the old abandoned factory, blinking into the darkness. Caroline pulls a battery powered lantern from her backpack and turns it on, swinging the cone of light around the room. There are huge machines everywhere and several long conveyor belts stretching across the room. Visible near the ceiling is what looks like a windowed room, set up high to survey the factory below. The floor is covered with a thick layer of dust and their boots crunch under glass shards as they wander around the huge room.

NICOLAS Whoa. This place is huge!

KENNETH

(Looking up at the ceiling, points) What’s that?

CAROLINE

(Swings flashlight to where he’s pointing) Probably the boss’s office, the windows would be perfect for keeping an eye on his workers.

KENNETH

Let’s find the way up and see if we can find anything!

They wander around the room, passing through the rows of machines until Caroline spots a door to their right. She shines her light on the door, illuminating a large plastic sign with block letters reading MANAGER’S OFFICE.

CAROLINE Here we go.

(Turns to face the boys) Shall we go up?

The teenagers pull the heavy door open and go upstairs, their footsteps echoing in the stairwell.

7 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT 7

The upstairs hallway of the factory is short and there are three doors, one straight ahead, one left, and one to the right. Near the door to the right sits an old loveseat, the upholstery eaten away with age. A small table sits next to it with a bronze ashtray, completely filled with dust. Near the left door are an armchair and another small table. A

Page 16: The History of Steam

bronze plaque on the right door is engraved with the words GEORGE WILKINS - DISTRICT MANAGER. A small sign next to the left door reads FILING. At this point, the teenagers silently split up and they each go into a different door, Caroline goes left, Kenneth goes into the Manager’s office and Nicolas walks to the door straight ahead, running his gloved fingers over a sign reading PARTS ROOM - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY!

8 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FILING ROOM - NIGHT 8

Caroline enters the filing room and gazes down the rows and rows of rusty filing cabinets. She heads to the nearest one and tries to tug the first drawer open but finds it locked. The drawer below it is open, however and she sets her lantern on a cabinet and pulls the drawer open, digging through its contents. She pulls out several neatly folded blueprints and unfolds them atop the open drawer, picking up the lantern to read them. Her eyes widen with surprise and curiosity as she begins to inspect them. CAROLINE Modular parts? That’s actually a good idea.

9 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY PARTS ROOM - NIGHT 9

Nicolas timidly enters the parts room. The high shelves seem to go on forever in the dark room. He pulls a flashlight from one of his many pockets and starts to look around. He opens a box on the shelf and finds unidentifiable metal parts. He picks one up and examines it and when he returns it to the box, his hand is covered in oil.

NICOLAS (Sniffing palm) Oil? He opens the next box and digs through the cogs and gears, inspecting each one with curiosity. As he walks towards the third box, a loud crunch is heard from under his boot and he jumps in surprise. He shines his flashlight down and lifts his boot carefully. A crushed rat skull lies on the floor and he sighs with relief before turning and exiting the room. He walks back through the hallway and into the open Filing Room door.

10 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY HALLWAY – NIGHT 10

Nicolas walks down the short hallway and enters the door on the left, the door that Caroline had previously gone into.

11 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FILING ROOM - NIGHT 11

Page 17: The History of Steam

Nicolas pokes his head into the room and walks towards his sister’s lantern light. She is busy reading over the blueprints she discovered and does not hear him enter. NICOLAS Sis?

CAROLINE (Jumps)

Nic! You scared me. Look at this blueprint. I think this might have actually worked. I wonder why they closed this factory?

NICOLAS

(Shrugs) I dunno. They were using oil bases for their cars though. Isn’t that a little dangerous? It’s highly flammable!

CAROLINE

Strange... At least our steam cars won’t burn you alive if you get in an accident... Let’s go see if Kenneth found anything.

The twins exit the Filing Room and walk across the hallway into the open door of the Manager’s Office.

12 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY HALLWAY – NIGHT 12

Kenneth swings the large oak door open and peers inside. The room is dark, so he pulls a flashlight from one of the pockets of his leather side bag. He clicks it on and shines it around the room. The office is outfitted with a large desk and behind it is a huge, high-backed leather office chair. Kenneth’s face breaks into a grin when he sees the chair. KENNETH Oh, jackpot!

13 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY MANAGER’S OFFICE - NIGHT 13

Kenneth enters the room quickly and tosses his bag on the otherwise empty desk and climbs into the leather chair, folding his hands behind his head and propping his feet up on the desk. He looks out over the factory, relaxing. KENNETH This guy had the life.

The twins walk into the Manager’s Office and shine their flashlights around the room, both pausing as they find

Page 18: The History of Steam

Kenneth kicked back in the huge chair. Kenneth grins at them.

KENNETH Hey! You guys find anything interesting? CAROLINE

Yeah, there’s a room full of these weird blueprints. I grabbed a couple to take back.

(Looks over to the filing cabinet) What’s in there? KENNETH I dunno, I just found this sweet chair and climbed in. I wish I could take THIS back with me.

(Laughs) CAROLINE

(Stares) So you’ve just been sitting here? KENNETH

(Stammers) I mean, yeah, well, I was looking around too. I can look and sit! CAROLINE Ugh, whatever. Nic, help me get this cabinet open. NICOLAS Can’t we just go home? I’m so hungry... CAROLINE The sooner you help me, the sooner we can leave. NICOLAS

(Sighs) Fine, but I’m gonna find some real lights.

Nicolas walks to the far wall near the windows. He notices that the windows are missing and finds some shards of glass on the floor. Shrugging, he grabs the massive horseshoe shaped and swings it to the ON position. Nothing happens. He swings the switch back and forth several times and finally, the lights hanging above the factory floor begin to glow faintly for several seconds. There is a huge surge of light as the lights heat up before they explode, shattering the bulbs and showering the floor below with white hot embers and glass. Kenneth jumps at the sudden noise and tips too far backwards in his chair, sending it toppling backward with him still in it. The lamps below are still spitting sparks at random, buzzing loudly. KENNETH

Page 19: The History of Steam

What the hell was that? NICOLAS (Stammering)

It... Uh... I... Caroline grabs several files from the cabinet and shoves them in her backpack.

CAROLINE Let’s get out of here. The power company will notice that surge for sure and send someone to check it out.

They gather their belongings and dash out of the office and down the stairs.

14 INT. HORNET CAR COMPANY FACTORY FLOOR - NIGHT 14

The teenagers dodge machines and dash through the front door of the factory, their boots thundering in the quietness around them.

15 EXT. HORNET CAR COMPANY FACTORY - NIGHT 15

The teenagers dash past the slimy lake and through the high grass. Nicolas trips and they stop to help him back up before taking off running again.

16 EXT. NORTH DIESEL TRAIN STATION - NIGHT 16 The teenagers reach the train station platform fairly quickly and wait anxiously for the next train to stop and take them back to the city. NICOLAS (Bouncing impatiently)

C’mon, c’mon, c’mon!! Slowly approaching them from the city, they see the red and blue flashing lights of police cars and fire trucks. The lone headlight of the steam train passes the flashing lights and stops at the platform, door sliding open with a soft hiss. Nicolas, Kenneth, and Caroline quickly jump onto the train. The doors slide shut and the train takes off, heading back towards the city lights.

17 INT. STEAM TRAIN - NIGHT 17

Inside the train, Caroline pulls the blueprints and files from her backpack and look over them. They discuss their theories on why gasoline power was abandoned in favor of steam. Kenneth points at some of the files and they all seem to come to the same conclusion. During the conversation, Nicolas drifts off in Caroline’s lap. They exit the train when their stop arrives and walk towards their neighborhood. (No dialogue heard)

Page 20: The History of Steam

18 EXT. TEENAGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT 18

The teenagers stand on the corner of the street they live on, looking exhausted. KENNETH So what do we do with this stuff? CAROLINE

I say we take it to Ms. Wilkins in the morning and show her what we found. NICOLAS (Yawning) I don’t know... Everyone will know that we went to the factory. It’s against the rules... CAROLINE We have to tell someone, Nic. KENNETH I agree. First thing tomorrow, we’ll go to her office and show her the blueprints. Maybe they can use the information. For now though - (Yawns) I’m going to bed. Sleep tight, you two.

Kenneth walks over to the vined trellis propped up against the side of his garage and carefully climbs up to his open window, ducking inside. The twins enter the side door of their own house and slip inside.

19 INT. KENNETH’S BEDROOM - NIGHT 19

Kenneth climbs through the window and removes his books. He sets his shoulder bag on a cluttered desk and climbs into bed, pulling the covers over him and closing his eyes.

20 INT. CAROLINE AND NICOLAS’ BEDROOM - NIGHT 20

Caroline climbs the small ladder on the side of the bunk bed and crawls under the blankets. Nicolas settles into the bed on the bottom bunk. The twin close their eyes and drift off to sleep. A white flash fills the room with light.

21 EXT. HORNET MOTOR CAR COMPANY FACTORY - DAY (PAST) 21

Caroline stands outside the car factory wearing the clothes from their exploration, backpack slung across one shoulder, though it is now bustling with people walking in and out of the sliding door. Smoke pours from the tall smokestacks and

Page 21: The History of Steam

the factory is fairly new looking. She looks around excitedly for a moment before dashing through the open door and into the factory.

22 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 22

Caroline walks into the factory and covers her ears; the machines around her are loudly clinking as they perform their duties. She grabs a pair of earplugs from a box nearby and stuffs them into her ears. She follows a male worker to the time clock where he punches a car quickly. CAROLINE

Excuse me, do you work here? Can you give me a tour?

The man walks past her and to a nearby machine, ignoring her question. She shrugs and walks up to a woman who is pulling levers on machine. CAROLINE M’am? Can you tell me about this factory? The woman continues throwing levers and shouts instructions to the person across from her. Caroline looks around confused, but smiles anyway. CAROLINE Fine. I guess I’ll just show myself around! She takes off down the rows of whirring machines to explore the bustling factory.

23 EXT. HORNET MOTOR CAR COMPANY FACTORY - DAY (PAST) 23

Kenneth stands outside the factory, looking confused. He eyes the people rushing around and decides to follow them inside.

24 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 24

Kenneth wanders around the interior of the factory attempting to strike up conversation with the workers. Just as with Caroline, the workers ignore Kenneth completely. Growing frustrated, Kenneth walks up to one of the nearby workers and begins shouting. KENNETH

Hey! Who’s in charge here? Hellooo? Could you stop ignoring me for just a minute and give me directions? (waves hands) Hello?

Page 22: The History of Steam

Kenneth jumps as he is grabbed from behind by GEORGE WILKINS, a tall, broad man with slicked back black hair.

WILKINS I think you’ll have to come with me. KENNETH Hey! Let me go! (squirms) I didn’t do anything, I just want to look around!

Kenneth stops squirming and stares up at the man holding his shoulder. The man guides him to the side of the factory and shoves him through a side door with a sign reading MANAGER’S OFFICE posted. WILKINS This way, please. (Guiding forcefully) KENNETH Like I have a choice...

25 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY HALLWAY - DAY (PAST) 25

The big man guides Kenneth through the upstairs hallways. The chairs and tables look pristine, no dust to speak of. The pair walk through the door on the right, passing by the sign reading GEORGE WILKINS - DISTRICT MANAGER. WILKINS Just through this door, now...

26 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY MANGER’S OFFICE - DAY (PAST) 26

Wilkins shoves Kenneth into one of the empty chairs near his desk and takes a seat in the huge leather chair. Wilkins folds his hands on top of his desk and begins to speak to Kenneth. (No dialogue heard)

27 EXT. HORNET MOTOR CAR COMPANY FACTORY - DAY (PAST) 27

Nicolas stands outside the car factory, looking confused and slightly frightened. He watches workers walk around and peeks through the open factory door. He mills around for several moments before deciding to enter the factory as well.

28 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 28

Inside the factory, Nicolas wanders around, staring at the machines. The workers around him bump into him and go about their business. He approaches a female worker at a machine.

Page 23: The History of Steam

NICOLAS Excuse me, what’s going on here? This factory has been deserted for years...

The worker does not even look up from her machine. Nicolas stands back and watches the machines run. He watches one machine in particular very closely. There seems to be something wrong with its mechanisms and the cogs aren’t spinning at a constant speed like the other machines. Nicolas approaches an ENGINEER working at an idle machine on the other side of the factory.

NICOLAS Sir, I think there’s something wrong with this machine up here.

(Points at it) It’s not running as smoothly as the ones around it. ENGINNER (Looks up) What are you doing in here, kid? This isn’t a playground. NICOLAS I know, I just... well, I wanted to see what was going on and I noticed this machine... ENGINEER Oh, and I suppose you’re a professional? NICOLAS Well, no, but... I know a little about machines and this one seems to be skipping a rotation. According to the blueprints... ENGINEER Why don’t you just let the adults handle the big expensive machines? Get out of here! (Under breath) Stupid kids...

Nicolas walks off with his head down. He takes a stool from one of the empty machines and perches himself on it, watching the factory workers pull levers and perform their assigned tasks with a frown on his face.

29 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 29

Caroline is standing with a woman running a machine connected to a conveyor belt. The machine rolls many gears onto the conveyor belt, clanking loudly as each one is pressed and dropped. On the other side of Caroline, another

Page 24: The History of Steam

WOMAN is struggling to pick up and inspect each piece before it passes by her.

CAROLINE Do you want some help? WOMAN (Looking up from her work)

That would be wonderful... do you know what to look for? CAROLINE I’m a quick learner. Tell me what to do and I’ll help! WOMAN (Looking around) Okay. As each gear passes, you need to make sure all of the teeth on the edge are in tact. If there are any missing, broken, or cracked, toss the gear in this bin for recycling. Got it? CAROLINE Easy peasy.

Caroline helps the woman inspect the gears for several minutes. Each damaged gear dropped into the bin makes a loud clink. CAROLINE So do you like your job? The woman looks up at her for a moment before looking back down at the conveyor belt without answering.

30 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY MANAGER’S OFFICE - DAY (PAST) 30

Kenneth sits on the edge of his chair, looking up at Wilkins, who is now standing with his palms flat on the desk in front of him. KENNETH (Shouting) Why would you do this?! WILKINS

Kid, you learn early that money talks and there’s a price for anything. I just happened to meet the right guy offering the right payout. KENNETH (Stands, still shouting) You’re awful. When is the factory explosion set to go?

Page 25: The History of Steam

Wilkins doesn’t speak; he just turns his back to Kenneth and raises his hands, gesturing to the factory floor seen through the giant window in his office. Kenneth cranes his neck to see the floor below and his eyes widen. He looks to Wilkins and back to the factory quickly and there is a fiery flash below.

31 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 31

A ball of fire engulfs the factory floor and machines are set aflame, the oil coating the parts hissing as it burns off. Many workers go flying and there is debris everywhere, trapping many in the burning building.

32 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY MANAGER’S OFFICE - DAY (PAST) 32

Up in the manager’s office, Kenneth is on the floor with his arms thrown up around his neck and head. Looking up slowly, he stands and looks himself over before turning to the manager.

33 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 33

Caroline is lying on the floor, her leg pinned by a fallen piece of debris. She sits up and sees the woman that was inspecting the gears on the conveyor belt is also lying on the ground several feet from her, bleeding profusely. The woman isn’t moving. She begins crying as she tries desperately to free her leg. Once clear of the debris, she limps off towards the entrance to the factory.

34 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 34

Nicolas is pinned under a huge piece of machinery, struggling to free his legs. There is a pool of blood forming around him as he struggles. He puts his fingers in the blood and looks at them before screaming in pain and collapsing backwards.

35 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY MANAGER’S OFFICE - DAY (PAST) 35

Kenneth stands near Wilkins shouting, pointing his finger and gesturing angrily. KENNETH

You won’t get away with this. All of these people have families! I’ll report you! WILKINS (Laughing) Who do you think will listen to you, boy? Who do you think paid for this? If I’ve got the steam companies in my pocket, you think they haven’t taken care of the authorities in this town?

Page 26: The History of Steam

KENNETH Someone will listen. People have a right to know what happened here! WILKINS I’m afraid I can’t let that happen. (Pulls a long metal bar from under the desk) I’ll just have to shut your mouth before you can find anyone who MIGHT believe your tale. That’s the thing about gasoline powered engines, you see. They are highly flammable and volatile if something isn’t just right. The authorities will find that not all the machines were up to code and I’ll collect the insurance money along with my reward from the steam companies.

Laughing, Wilkins lunges forward at Kenneth, swinging the metal pipe a few inches away from his head. Kenneth dodges and runs out of the door into the hallway.

36 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY HALLWAY - DAY (PAST) 36

Kenneth skids through the hallway, slipping on spilled liquid and slicing his hands on some broken glass as he catches himself. He hops back to his feet and races down the stairs, leaping down the last half of the flight and running onto the factory floor.

37 INT. HORNET CAR FACTORY FLOOR - DAY (PAST) 37

Wilkins swings his pipe wildly, running just behind Kenneth as he dodges the fallen machines and debris in his race to the open factory doors. Kenneth jumps onto a huge machine and launches off of it, leaping over a huge patch of fire blocking his path. He races out of the factory.

38 EXT. HORNET MOTOR CAR COMPANY FACTORY - DAY (PAST) 38

Kenneth runs down the asphalt path and past the lake. He looks over his shoulder back to the factory. Wilkins is standing near the door, panting heavily. He begins laughing bu throws the pipe into the lake angrily.

39 INT. SCHOOL, MS. WILKINS’ OFFICE - AFTERNOON (PRESENT) 39

The three teenagers stand in front of Ms. Wilkins’ desk, pointing out different areas on the blueprints. Ms. Wilkins frowns at them as they tell their story to her.

MS. WILKINS Wait... you went into the old factory? No one is allowed in there. Do you realize how much trouble you’re in?

Page 27: The History of Steam

CAROLINE But people need to know what happened! We know the truth! We were there! MS. WILKINS You can’t possibly determine what happened just from a few blueprints. NICOLAS No! We were there! We saw the explosion happen. I... I almost died! MS. WILKINS (Staring) Right... I’ll make sure to mention that part to the school psychologist... KENNETH We are not crazy! (Frustrated, shouting) I know what I saw! MS. WILKINS Look. I’m going to be nice and not tell the police that it was you three who set off the alarms last night. But you’ll all have to serve detention for three weeks. You need to learn not to tell lies or disobey adults.

Kenneth walks around the room with a curious look on his face. He picks up Ms. Wilkins’ name placard and waves it at the other two. Caroline and Nicolas’ eyes widen as they look at it. KENNETH You’re related to him, aren’t you? George Wilkins? MS. WILKINS

That’s my grandfather’s name, yes... But I don’t see what that has to do...

(Purses lips) Get out. I’ll hear no more of this. No one else will believe what you say anyway. NICOLAS No one -else-? So YOU believe us? MS. WILKINS (Shouting) Out!! All of you!!

The teenagers sulk out of the room. Ms. Wilkins picks up a picture frame off of her desk and blows the dust off of it.

Page 28: The History of Steam

The picture in the frame is a black and white photo of a tall man with slicked back hair and a little girl with pigtails standing in front of the factory, cutting a ribbon in front of the car factory. She shoves the photo in one her desk drawers with the blueprints and slams the drawer shut.
