Please read all instructions before beginning.

Pre-washing not recommended.

Yardages and Cutting Yardages and cutting steps are for either The Hobbit quilt or The Lord of the Rings quilt. WOF is 42" width of fabric

from selvage edge to selvage edge. LOF is length of fabric, parallel to the selvage edges.

1 The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings panel • Trim to 34 1/2" x 41 1/2".

1 3/4 yards black word print • 2 LOF strips 4 1/2" x 56 1/2" for side borders.

• 2 identical 4 1/2" x remaining WOF strips for top

border.

• 2 identical 4 1/2" x remaining WOF strips for

bottom border.

1 yard black ring print • 1 strip 14 1/2" x WOF; cut into (2) 7 1/2" x 14 1/2"

rectangles. Trim remainder of strip lengthwise

into (1) 7 1/2" x remaining WOF strip and (1)

4 1/2" x remaining WOF strip. Cut the 7 1/2"

strip into (3) 7 1/2" squares. Cut the 4 1/2"

strip into (4) 4 1/2" squares.

• 2 strips 7 1/2" x WOF; cut into (7) 7 1/2" squares.

3/4 yard light character print • 3 strips 7 1/2" x WOF; cut into (12) 7 1/2" squares.

7/8 yard black solid • 4 strips 1" x WOF; trim to (2) 41 1/2" strips and

(2) 35 1/2" strips for panel framing.

• 7 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding.

4 1/4 yards of 42" backing fabric OR

4 5/8 yards of 42" directional fabric • 2 pieces 73" x WOF OR

• 2 pieces 80" x WOF for directional fabric

OR

2 1/4 yards wide backing fabric • 1 piece 73" x 80"

Batting • 1 piece 73" x 80"

Completing the Quilt Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams as directed.

Refer to the exploded quilt diagram throughout the following steps. Only one diagram is shown. Both quilts are

pieced in the same way.

1. Sew the 1" x 41 1/2" black strips to the long sides of the panel. Press seams toward the strips. Stitch the 1" x

35 1/2" black strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips.

2. Stitch a light character square to the top and bottom of the black ring rectangles. Press seams toward the

rectangles. Add a 7 1/2" black ring square to the top and bottom of each strip to complete 7 1/2" x 42 1/2" left and

right strips. Sew the strips to the long sides of the framed panel. Press seams toward the strips.

3. Sew 4 light character squares alternately together with (3) 7 1/2" black ring squares to make the 7 1/2" x

49 1/2" top row. Press seams toward the black ring squares. Repeat to make the bottom row. Stitch the rows to the

top and bottom of the panel section to complete the 49 1/2" x 56 1/2" quilt center. Press seams toward the rows.

4. Stitch the 4 1/2" x 56 1/2" black word strips to the long sides of the quilt center. Press seams toward the

strips.

5. Sew 2 identical 4 1/2" x remaining WOF black word strips short ends together to make a long strip, matching

print at the seam as much as possible. Press seam to one side. Trim to 49 1/2" for the top strip. Repeat to make the

bottom strip.

6. Stitch a 4 1/2" black ring square to each end of the top and bottom strips to complete the 4 1/2" x 57 1/2" top

and bottom borders. Press seams away from the squares. Sew the borders to the top and bottom of the quilt center to

complete the top. Press seams toward the borders.

7. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long

edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim to make a 73" x 80" backing piece.

8. Layer the top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with the

top.

9. Join the black solid binding strips on the short ends with diagonal seams to make a long strip. Press seams in

one direction. Press the strip in half along the length with wrong sides together.

10. Bind the quilt edges using your favorite method to complete the quilt.
