    Dear Friends,

Due to this busy time of the year and the strict bulletin deadlines, I have been

somewhat behind on my bulletin articles.

I hope you had a wonderful, happy and safe Christmas.

As we continue this busy, but joyous, Christmas season, be assured of my prayers

for your family and have a blessed New Year!

It may take some time and patience but we can make it an incredibly good 2021.

Thanks for your love and support of Holy Spirit Parish!

    Novus Annus (Happy New Year)!

As we continue with our celebration of Christmas, today...in a special way, we remember the Holy Family. When

we look at the many depictions of the Holy Family in art....we tend to have an idyllic view of their existence.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph....a vision of happiness and serenity....an image which is perhaps at odds with the reality

of our own lives. Sure, they had to settle for a stable for the birth of the Infant Jesus.....but afterwards wasn’t it

all a bed of roses?....it was easy for them....they had the inside track.....they were caring for the Son of God. In

actual fact...their problems were just beginning.

In today’s Gospel we hear Mary being forewarned by Simeon that a sword will

pierce her heart. He recognizes the Holy Family when they bring Jesus to the

Temple....but his message to Mary warns her that while her Son will do

wondrous things....she will watch him suffer, and die a horrible death. Just a

few days after the birth of her Son....Mary has worries already.

Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Again, problems for

the Holy Family! Joseph is warned by the Angel to bring the family to Egypt to escape the wrath of Herod.....so

afraid is Herod of the Child Jesus that he orders the killing of all male children aged two years and younger. Poor

Joseph.....since his betrothal to Mary its been one worry after another. Although their relationship was a chaste

one, he finds that his fiancée is pregnant, and an angel is sent by God to explain to him what is happening. Then

when they go to Bethlehem for the census....he can find nowhere to stay other than the stable. Next, after the

Magi have visited, he is warned to get the family out of town because the authorities want to kill Jesus. If we

were in Joseph’s place we would probably wonder....what have I signed up for?

So for Joseph and Mary, while they did not enjoy the many conveniences we take for granted.... life’s situations

were pretty much the same as those we experience. They had more than their share of troubles, but trusted

that with God’s help they could work through those problems. That is why this feast day is of such importance

for all of us. None of us will experience a trouble free life. We each have our own family situations to work

through...but like Joseph and Mary we need to trust that with the help of God....we will overcome the struggles

we sometimes face. And while we may not consider ourselves to be particularly ‘holy’ ...sanctity....or

holiness.....is part of God’s plan for us ...... so we need to keep working at it....creating our own holy family

wherever we find ourselves in life.

Family life these days can be very difficult ...but if we follow the example of Joseph and Mary....we’ll get there.

We will experience some troubles along the way, but we know ultimately, that with the help of God, we will

prevail. There are no shortcuts. Mass and the Sacraments and prayer are the keys to understanding God’s will

for us...and through them, we deepen our relationship with God....and we begin to see a clearer picture ......and

realize a peace of mind that can only be found in God.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

    Respect Life Committee

    Coordinator: Florence Scarinci

Importance of One Life In my house, among all the other things we do to prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth, we must watch, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. If you have never watched it, please do, because it contains a powerful pro-life message: the difference one life can make. In the film it is Christmas Eve and George Bailey, seeing himself as a failure, is standing on a bridge contemplating suicide. Miraculously Clarence, an angel-in-training, appears and shows George how he has made a difference in not just his family’s lives but also the lives of the townspeople, and the very town itself. Clarence shows him the death, destruction and corruption that would have ensued had George not lived and acted the way he did.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is fiction but there are many real-life examples of people whose lives could have been lost, but because of the courageous actions of their mother, survived, thrived, and enriched our lives.

Andrea Bocelli is one such person. His mother had an attack of appendicitis during her pregnancy. After the treatment, the doctors advised her to abort, telling her the baby would have some kind of disability. But she would not. Andrea was born with congenital glaucoma and was totally blind by the age of twelve. But that did not stop him from becoming a lawyer nor from developing his talent, his voice, that has been called the most beautiful in the world.

And then there is Tim Tebow. His mom was told to abort him because she had contracted a parasitic infection during her pregnancy. But having faith in God and a belief that all life is sacred, she refused. We are grateful to Heisman trophy winner Tebow for the exciting moments in sports that he has given us. But more importantly, Tim has made a difference through his foundation in promoting adoption, fighting human trafficking, and empowering children with disabilities.

There is a very long list of well-known people whose moms considered aborting their baby, either because of diagnosis of the baby’s potential handicap, the circumstances of the baby’s conception, or the mom’s young age. But the moms chose life and we are the richer for their brave decision.

Here are the names of just a few such people:

Layne Beachley (world champion surfer) Justin Bieber (pop star) Nick Cannon (actor) Cher (singer, actress) Faith Daniels (news anchor) Celine Dion (singer) Valerie Gatto (Ms. Pennsylvania 2014) Jesse Jackson (civil rights activist, former member of Congress) Steve Jobs (where would we be without Apple phones and computers?)

It’s true that most of the people whose moms opt not to have an abortion are not famous. But most do grow up to be responsible, loving adults who make their little portion of the world better and happier by their very existence. Every life is important. (source: welcometotruth.com)

Eartha Kitt (singer, actress, dancer, writer) Jack Nicholson (actor) Brooke Shields (actress, model) Marlin Stutzman (member of the House of Representatives) Ethel Waters (actress, singer) Oprah Winfrey (tv personality, businesswoman) Kelly Wright (news anchor) POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II

    Religious Education

Holy Spirit’s, in-person, religious education classes have met 10 times this year.

To ensure the safety of our students and staff, everyone attending wears a mask and has their

forehead temperature taken each week. The number of people allowed up to the classroom area is

limited, and everyone is directed through entrance and/or exit only doors.

The desks, chairs, classrooms and other surfaces are also wiped down after class.

After 10 weeks, we have a perfect attendance rate of about 45%!!

Below is a list of the students with perfect attendance so far this year!
