The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph~ December 29th, 2013

When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called my son. When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the re-gion of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled,

He shall be called a Nazorean. Matthew 2: 13-15, 19-23

Parents: It’s been brought to our attention that food items are be-ing left in the pews and on the floor. Other toddlers that come in after you are finding these food items including raisins, gummy bears, gum etc. which can be choking hazards. Please do not bring these into the church—keep our little ones safe. Adults: please look over your pew in coming in and upon leaving. We have found cough drops and pills which may have fallen from pockets or purses that are very dangerous to our children.

Maranatha: will meet Thursday, January 9th, 6:30—8 pm in Life Lounge we started a new prayer group called Maranatha...meaning come Lord Jesus. Maranatha is an Aramaic expression occurring in St. Paul (I Corinthians 16:22) in the verse "If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. Marana tha." The Christian Fathers understood the term to mean "Our Lord has come." But more proba-bly it means what St. John has at the close of the New Testament, "Come, Lord Jesus" (Revelation 22:20). Join us!

Our Adult Faith Formation class meets in Padre Hall on Sunday mornings from 8:45AM to 9:45 AM, except for the second Sunday of every month, which is the Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast. Come and join us for the “Opening the Word.”

The source for our Scripture study for Sunday morning is from the Augustine Institute out of Denver, Colorado titled “Opening the Word.” Remember we are trying to stay a week ahead with the gospel reading, giving you more time to ponder the great mystery of Christ like that of Mary.

The gospel reading for The Epiphany of the Lord, January 5th is taken from Matthew 2:2-12. The feast Epiphany of the Lord, the story of the Magi takes place halfway through the Church's Christmas season. Sunday, January 12th, is the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord, which ends the Church’s celebration of the Christmas season.

The story of the Magi, the Three Wise Men, who travelled from the East to pay homage to Jesus as the King of the Jews is part of our Christmas tradition. (Incidentally, the Gospels never tell us that there were three; we get that number from the three gifts they brought, by assuming each bought one gift.)

As we see the scene unfold, it doesn't look like much like a royal court. It simply looks like a father, mother, and child, living in humble circumstances in the tiny, backwater town in a rural province of Rome. And yet it was there that the magi encountered the King of all creation.

In some ways, it can be the same for us at church. We attend Mass, it can seem ordinary, almost most mundane, because we do it week after week. We may even find our minds drifting to the things we're going to do when we get home instead of the fact that we are in the presence of the Lord of the Universe.

Gospel — Matthew 2: 2-12 -

Questions to ponder throughout the week.

When the Magi enter the house, they adored Jesus. If you have spent time at Eucharistic adoration, what was that that experience like for you?

Why did King Herod want to kill Jesus?

How is the Epiphany and the Eucharist related to one another?

Special Collection: December 28-29 the Diocese of Rapid City will take up the Typhoon Haiyan Recovery Collection. I urge you to express our solidarity and living support for our brothers and sisters in need. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked each Diocese to take up a special collection for our affected brothers and sisters and the Church of that region. The collection will provide immediate necessities and to assist in long-term recovery and need to rebuild the Church after widespread destruction. Bishop Gruss

Be At Peace ~ This Christmas, take some of the pressure off yourself. Acknowledge that the King and Queen of Heaven have things well in hand and will find a way to make this holy season—and you—very good. You just have to let them. — from A Mary Christmas

“O Star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy Perfect Light.” — John Henry Hopkins.

Cardinal Dolan said it perfectly this week. “For Christians, as the sun begins its ascent, God the Son is born in Bethlehem. And the result was 'Joy To The World.'" He continued: “We need a little Christmas, don’t we? Murders, wars, violence, death, sickness, struggle can get us way down. We can’t give up. God sure didn’t give up on us: into all of this, on that “Silent Night,” His Son was born to show us the way back.”

Adult Faith Formation: What Is The Meaning and Purpose of My Life? How Do I Find Happiness and Fulfilment? If you’re wondering if there’s more to life than just “getting by” and are ready to focus on what really matters, then discover the extraordinary Catholic teaching known as the Theology of the Body. It will give you a revolutionary and fulfilling vision for life, as it offers a new way to authentically see yourself, your faith, your relationships, and your world. Theology of the Body for Adults—coming in January, 2014!!!

The Triumph is a powerful new documentary film about a prophecy unfolding right now, before our very eyes. From a tiny village in Bosnia-Herzegovina comes a warning to the world, and a message of hope. Does this woman really know mankind’s future, as millions believe? De-cide for yourself.

“This is without a doubt one of the greatest historical and spiritual phenomenon's that has ever happened in the history of mankind and the great thing about it is that it is happening right now, during our time — during your time. We felt it was very important to allow the audi-ence to explore the phenomenon for themselves with an open mind and an open heart and then decide what to make of it,” said Triumph producer Zaid Jazrawi. “Explore the controversy and ask yourself: Is it a hoax?”

Get ready for The Triumph, a documentary film that investigates one of the greatest mysteries in the modern world… a real-life prophecy unfolding today. Once in a rare while, a documentary film comes along that has the power to change the world. According to early reviews, The Triumph is one of those films. Director Sean Bloomfield and producer Zaid Jazrawi have devot-ed the past several years of their lives to The Triumph.

Filmed primarily in the heart of Bosnia-Herzegovina, The Triumph investigates a modern-day miracle that has global implications.

A movie that gives hope and builds faith. Audience reaction: "simply amazing" Awesome docu-mentary" "Very inspirational" “Extremely moving" " Riveting… very powerful" "Spiritually uplifting" "Life changing" " Brought me to tears" Source: ZENIT
