Brothers and Sisters,
THANK YOU for your consoling prayers for my family and for my recently departed cousin, Sam. I also
wish to THANK YOU for your messages of encouragement, gi s, and for taking the me to bless me
with a joyful drive‐by to celebrate my 40th birthday! I appreciate your loving support.
This week, I wish to share with you a message from our Bishops.
May you be blessed as you glorify Christ’s Holy Name,
Father Erik Esparza
Pastor’s Perspective
August 9, 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Joyful Day of the Lord! During this Ordinary Time, we invoke the Holy Spirit that He may help us to remain hopeful and perseverant in our faith amid the pandemic and the recent events around racism in our nation.
We are with you and we are aware of your suffering; we know the difficulties you are going through, we feel them, and we have kept you in our prayers.
In union with our brother Bishops, we re-affirm that "human life is a precious gift from God; that each individual who receives it has responsibilities to God, to themselves and to others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, should protect and care for human life in each stage of its existence" (Pro-Life Pastoral Plan).
We want to express our concern for the Hispanic community because it has been affected by the pandemic in a disproportionate manner. According to the most recent statistics, 54.8% of those infected by COVID-19 in California are Latinos who in many cases are working in essential jobs (CDPH, July 13, 2020). At a national level, the African American community is the most affected. We know that the Pandemic is very serious in many of your countries of origin and that you are very concerned for your families in those countries. The pandemic continues to claim many lives and the number of infections is growing at an alarming rate. It is urgent that we follow all necessary measures to protect ourselves and those around us. We need to seek immediate medical help in case we are affected by COVID-19.
We must seriously practice the recommended actions: As difficult as it is, please avoid family gatherings and unnecessary outings, in addition to using masks, and keeping our distance. We need to take care of ourselves and others by following the CDC directives and by acting in a responsible manner towards the solution of this crisis. Unfortunately, the effects of the pandemic and the culture of racism continue to affect the poorest, most especially people of color.
Let us remember that in our Christian Tradition, aid to the sick has been heroic especially in times of pandemics. This practice must continue. We must characterize ourselves by the practice of love of God, neighbor, and oneself. As we care for our health and that of our brothers and sisters, we are united in doing the loving will of God who desires our wellbeing.
Each day we pray to the Lord that He be with you all, your families, and communities. Our faith assures us that God’s Loving Will for us will prevail. We entrust all health workers and essential personnel to Our Lady of Guadalupe. We pray for the eternal rest of our deceased that God’s perpetual light may shine upon each one of them.
We send our blessing and entrust ourselves to your prayers.
In Christ’s Love,

DIOCESE OF SAN BERNARDINO
OFFICE OF THE BISHOP
Agosto 9, 2020
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

4 The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul
calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are
called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to
today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why
pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking
why should friends talk to one another or people in love
kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way
of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk
to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to
Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be
enthusiastic; it cannot be faint‐hearted. John Donne, a fif‐
teenth‐century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer
were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most
Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock,
breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break,
blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV).
It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer.
As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to
you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down,
but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel,
the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT PIUS X (1835‐1914) August 21
Presiden al vetoes we understand. But imagine vetoing a
papal elec on! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop
of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol
Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate
on the order of the Austro‐Hungarian emperor. Instead, the
cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the
first pope, a er a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail
from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing
simplicity. Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable
because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them,
forge ng that his old black cassock had been replaced by
papal white!
Taking as his mo o “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians
1:10), Pius X condemned the theological innova ons called
“modernism,” yet drama cally altered the then‐common
prac ce whereby people rarely received Communion for
fear of unworthiness, manda ng early First Communion and
urging everyone to frequent recep on. Refusing to bless
troops assembled in Saint Peter’s Square —“I bless peace,
not war!” — he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed
Chris an Europe despite his peacemaking efforts. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SACRED HEART ACADEMY FIRST COMMUNICANTS

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Or, if you use the clothes dryer, try using wool dryer balls instead of fabric so ener or dryer sheets. Dryer sheets and fabric so eners are usually full of chemicals and polyesters, which don’t break down easily and are harmful in the environment. Wool dryer balls can last for more than 1,000 uses and improve laundry circula on, which reduces drying me, energy consump on, and costs.
