here is no better time than now to start taking care of yourself and re-establishing healthy eating habits. The first way to do this is to put down the take-

out menu and step in to the kitchen.

A recent survey from Leger and Activia showed that Canadians aren't afraid to stir the pot: An impressive nine in 10 Canadian women say that cooking their own meals at home on a daily basis is their preferred way to eat a healthy and balanced diet.

Every grocery list should cover all of the essential food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy. Studies show that most of us don't get Canada Food Guide's daily recommended two to three servings a day. Yogurt is a recognized source of protein that can be incorporated into a recipe for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even dessert. The Activia Challenge is a delicious, simple way to incorporate dairy into your routine – and provide a daily dose of probiotics.

Preparing healthy recipes right at home often means no compromise on taste. Mairlyn Smith, professional home economist and cookbook author, recommends an easy way to transform Activia yogurt into a delicious trifle with this simple recipe.

As semester 1 comes to a close, students are finishing culminating assessment tasks and preparing to write their exams. We will soon begin another semester of learning that will be enhanced by the myriad of opportunities available to our students outside of the classroom.

Winter sports are well underway and we are looking forward to some great competition as we get to the playoffs. Girls and boys are playing basketball, hockey, volleyball and are in training for the official start of this year’s rowing season.

The Arts department members are in full swing as the Improv Team prepares to go to the regional competition in late February, the Music cruise (students perform onboard a number of times during the cruise) sets sail February 13th and the Drama students are preparing for this year’s SEARS drama festival. As always our visual artists are preparing their portfolios and the Yearbook/Photography classes are working on this year’s edition. Our students taking Technology classes are preparing for the DSBN Skills Challenges.

The energy in the food lab was electric at the end of January as students in grades 9 and 11 created their final products for the “TOP CHEF” competition. Teams of three were given the task of preparing food items using Ontario grown apples. The grade 11 students had to incorporate cardamom and vanilla into their recipes while the grade 9 challenge was to prepare dishes low in sugar. Food items were presented to a panel of judges who determined the winner.

Advanced placement biology classes meet after school on Wednesday and Thursday and after-hours Literacy and Numeracy classes are underway for our grade 9 and 10 students.

Ten GSS students qualified for the provincial finals for the DECA competition. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. They will compete in Toronto in February.

Each month staff choose a student from each grade who exemplifies one of the DSBN Character Traits. So far we have celebrated respon-sibility, optimism and caring. Pita Pit rewards each winner with a free large Pita and they receive some GSS swag.

Student Council continues to organize activities for the students including Spirit Days that add fun activities to the lunch hour for all students. Grimsby Secondary School continues to be a busy, exciting place both in and out of the classroom.

BEAMSVILLE DISTRICT S E C O N DA R Y S C H O O L

Thank you so much for taking the time to read the Beamsville District Secondary School (BDSS) section of this magazine! BDSS is a proud community school that offers a full range of academic programing, many specialty programs, as well as a diverse set of co-curricular activities. At BDSS we know that all students can learn, and our cul-ture of high expectations motivates all of us to do our best each day.

Students at BDSS have countless opportunities to access an amazing Secondary School experience. Our tradition of excellence in athletics is well known, and is currently supported through a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Sports. Our Buccaneers proudly wear the green, gold and white in provincial and national level competi-tions each year. Whether it be zone, SOSSA, OFSAA, or the Special Olympics, BDSS students consistently represent our school well and make us all proud.

We also offer SHSM programs in Manufacturing and Horticulture. These programs provide students with an in-depth experience in their fields, as well as key certifications and qualifications that give them a critical head start as they embark on their career journeys. BDSS is a thriving centre for education in technology, offering a full complement of tech courses including construction, transportation, welding, manufacturing, horticulture, food services technology, and computer engineering and programming. Students in these programs go on to the workplace, college, or university well prepared in their respective fields.

Outside the classroom, student organizations are plentiful - musicians, athletes, gamers, historians, actors and student leaders all have amazing opportunities to learn, thrive, and grow within their areas of interest. We believe strongly that students benefit in, and outside, the classroom when taking part in co-curricular activities. BDSS has an extremely active culture – staff and students alike value being involved, giving back to the community, and experiencing new things.

We are a caring school community at BDSS, and we value all of our students. The diversity of pathways offered at this school is second to none - Specialized School to Work (SSTW), Specialized School to Community (SSTC), College, University, Apprenticeship and Workplace destinations are all offered, valued and supported.

School LifeAll Bucs are in this together - our sense of community is unparalleled and we take pride in taking care of ourselves and each other.

I encourage you to explore our website (beamsvilless.dsbn.org), and correspond with us if you have any questions about BDSS. Also, please consider following us on Twitter to get up-to-the minute updates on the accomplishments of our students (@BDSSBucs, @MrMillerBDSS, @janice_sargeant).

It is my sincere privilege to serve as the principal at BDSS, and I look forward to learning with all of you.

SOUTH LINCOLN H I G H S C H O O L

Six students from South Lincoln’s Manufacturing SHSM have success-fully completed their first Canadian Welding Bureau certification. The welding performance test was done in Port Colborne in December, and the CWB Inspector returned to test bend their pieces in January. Congratulations Steven Killins, Corey Devries, Dylan Thomas, Jake Montgomery, Michael Szabo, and Garret Pepper. They have done an outstanding job to meet the CWB requirements with no failures.

The Canadian Welding Association Foundation has donated 8 new welding helmets to South Lincoln. The helmets are technologically advanced and the students are genuinely excited to have received them. They could not wait to try the helmets on and start welding through fresh eyes!

Mike Doyle is the Lead teacher for the Specialist High Skills Major in Manufacturing who, at the January Board meeting, was awarded the Director’s Recognition for Extraordinary Contribution. Mike is an advocate for Women in Technology and regularly brings students to the Empowering Young Women to Explore Skilled Trades and Technologies conference. He has embraced the Growth Mindset that we practice at South Lincoln. Mike believes that with support and encouragement, all students can and will achieve success.

Grade 11 and 12 students will be attending Camp Pathfinder this spring under the supervision of Mr Aloian. Camp Pathfinder, in Bancroft, is rooted in Anais Nin’s words: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful that the risk it took to blossom”. Mr Aloian has developed a scaffolded Character Education program that builds from personal reflection to an all-encompassing culminating activity. Activities include low- and high- ropes courses, kayaking, hiking and canoeing.

Our Literacy Team is busy preparing Grade 10 students for the mandatory Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test March 31, 2016. Members of the team will be working with students during the month of February, with more intense preparation shortly after March Break.

We are pleased to announce that South Lincoln High School will be using School Cash Online this spring to make paying for registration (and other school activities to come) easier for parents.

South Lincoln High School Construction, Math, Design and Art students are working with an Accessibility Team, which includes Brock University nursing students, to design, build and decorate portable ramps for interested Smithville businesses. Look for these ramps in the spring time.

On Friday afternoons South Lincoln students participate in an intra-mural hockey program. More than thirty students play a fast paced game. Also, SLHS organizes and runs 4 on 4 hockey tournaments at both the junior and senior levels.

On February 24th, we hosted Terry Carson, The Parenting Coach, who talked about Respectful Communication: Developing Relationships with Teens. Parents heard how teen brains work and the impact on behaviours, and received tips and strategies to garner more cooperative and responsible behaviours. This was the first in a four-part speaker series hosted by the School Councils of South Lincoln High School, Caistor Central, College Street and Gainsborough Public Schools. Look for our posters advertising future events where all parents are welcome and child care is provided.
