AlbertChislett
It is not every day that Memorial honors a great partnership with a pair of hon oraty doctor of lawsdegrees , but Messers Chislett and Verbiski are not ordinary prospectors and discoverers , Their compa ny, Archean Resources, in association with Diamond Fields Resources of Vancouver, B.c. , was respon sible for one of the world 's richest finds of nickel, copper and cobalt atVoisey'sBayinLabradorin1994.
Albert Chislettwas born in Islington, Trinity Bay, in 1949. After studying business administration atRyerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, he worked in the accounting department at Switt Premiumin Ontario for five years before requesting a transfer back to his home province . Within a year of hisreturn ,hehadestablishedaconstructioncompanyinSt.]ohn's ,whichheoperatedsuccessfullyfor15years
Mr. Chisletts interest in geology and mineral exploration began in the late 1980s, and stemmed fromhis love of the outdoors and his keen interest in Newfoundland 's natural and geological environment .In 1988 he started operating an independent mineral exploration company and began prospecting fulltime. Over the next few years he became one of the most active prospectors in the province, and wasthe first to receive a grant under the provincial Prospector 's Assistan ceProgram. TodayMr.Chislettispresident of Archean Resources .
Chris Verbiski, who was born in 1968 in the mining town of Buchans , is the youngest person ever toreceive an honorary degree from Memorial.
Mr. Verbiski has spent most of his life working in the mining industry, During his summers as a studentin Springdale he worked with numerous contractors , and in 1986 he began carrying out geophysical, geochemical and sampling work for the Newfoundland office of Norandalnc. For the next three yearshe combined his work with studies at Memorial University , then formed his own independent contracting company in 1989. One year later he began teaching a prospector course atWestviking Collegein Stephenville .
In 1993 Mr. Verbiski and Mr. Chislett formed Archean Resources ; Mr. Verbiski is vice-president . Todaythe company has 157 employees and manages quarterl y budgets that range between S12-16 million .They have received several honors for their accomplishments, including being named Mining Men ofthe Year by The Northern Miner . This year they received the Prospector of the Year Award from theProspectors and Developers Association of Canada . Their discovery at Voisey's Bay promises to result ina major contribution to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador .
