DANIEL GIORGETTI - COMPOSER SERIES 1
The title music was inspired by ticking clocks, 50s cool and the chimes of Big Ben. I wanted to create something which would encapsulate the musical identity of the series: The sound of The Hour. Sax,
vibes, piano and bass feature regularly in series one accompanied by a variety of percussion. Kevin’s score to series two takes this soundworld and develops it brilliantly.
KEVIN SARGENT - COMPOSER SERIES 2
Daniel’s wonderful main theme remained to frame each episode, and the soundworld he had established was such a part of The Hour. The challenge was to take this and add my own voice.
The edgy glamour of 1950s Soho gave us a new environment to explore - of vice and obsession. El Paradis needed some straight-ahead arrangements for the performers (Betcha I Getcha, Never Do a Tango, Paradise Club Theme) which inevitably fed into the score (The Raid, Stern and Kiki, Night Thoughts). All the club band’s original music was written before we started shooting, so moves and shots could be choreographed. Success is the Best Revenge was composed before I’d even seen
a script for episode five; I knew we would need something intense in the build up to the raid.
As we dug deeper into the characters’ back stories, the music needed to reflect this. Our heroes seek the truth in their investigations, but there is also a personal truth they are denying. Randall Brown has a strongly drawn new theme, eccentric and enigmatic but concealing great emotional depths (Do What You Have to Do). A lot of the harmonic progressions suggest Baroque, Handelian structures which conjure the British Establishment of the time, also work well in jazz arrangements and have a timeless quality. So Bloody Lost evokes a hidden past for Hector, Randall and Lix.
