Startup Mafia:
A group of individuals who depart a successful startup following an exit to found or invest in other startups. Made famous by the PayPal Mafia, these groups strengthen startup ecosystems, as talent, capital, and media coverage follow them closely.

An Emerging Marketer Mafia
These HubSpotters joined Boston tech startups as marketers in the months before or after the IPO. This is an overlooked result of startup mafias – VPs, managers, and key operators also spin out and, armed with deep expertise from their time at the recently-exited company, join other startups to help them grow. This talent, previously bottled up in a single company, is now more evenly distributed, which strengthens the entire local startup ecosystem. In addition to growing their new employers, these ex-HubSpotters bring some serious firepower to the frontlines of the local startup community. A city often criticized for its lack of startup hype, Boston suddenly finds itself with a glut of marketing muscle. As for that popular criticism, although it’s early, the HubSpot IPO and the following “Marketer Mafia” might make us … well … fuhgeddaboudit.

Beyond the Bosses
Reminder: This list is ONLY those HubSpot alumni who (1) joined Boston tech startups (2) to work in marketing (3) and did so in the months before or after the IPO, creating that IPO-related “mafia.” We acknowledge that many other HubSpot alumni either left earlier to join startups or work in other non-marketing roles to great success.
