Aloha!
It is hard to contain my excitement about the upcoming year. I have been on the island and the board for the last 2 years and
now not only do I get to M.C. events but I have a hand in controlling them (insert evil laugh). Really, I can’t wait to share my
particular brand of crazy with you.
One of my favorite things about being an Army Wife is the adventure of it all. Each new duty station has a world of possibilities.
And to make it even better, the Military is a small world. I know we say it all the time but each time I get to a new place and get
to see people we have met along the way I have an overwhelming feeling of being home
Another Day in Paradise.
With all of the moves I mentioned before, one of my favorite things is to discover a new state or country. The food, the
customs, the weather, all of it fascinates me. And since I have been here for 2 years already you can only imagine all of the
things I have discovered here. I am thrilled to have this chance to get to know you and share some of my findings with you and
learn about what you have found.

THE LADIES MAKIN IT HAPPEN
My name is Jennifer Wagnon,
and I will be your Second VP,
which may not mean much to
you until you attend one of the
super-fun luncheons I have
planned with our Executive
Board. I am originally from
Oklahoma, which is where I
met my husband, Greg. We
have been on our Army adventure for over 20 years now.
We have lived many different places, but I am one of those
military spouses who has learned to be happy just about
anywhere. Part of that philosophy was born of the fact that our
first duty station was the lovely Ft. Iriwn, CA (better known as
NTC). This is our second time in Hawaii, and we have truly
enjoyed it here. We are trying to absorb as much of the
temperate weather and as many as the outdoor activities as we
can while we are here.
I have 3 kids. My eldest daughter, Emily, is currently attending
Leeward Community College while I homeschool my high
school senior daughter, Elizabeth, and my high school freshman
son, Aaron. In addition to homeschooling all of my kids all of
the way through school, I have volunteered with many different
organizations and in many different positions.
This is my first year serving on the Hui board here in Hawaii,
and I’m excited about many of the big plans we have in store
for you! Aloha!
Aloha! My name is Ingrid
Cureton and I’m exited to be
your First Vice President for the
2015-2016 year. This will be my
very first year with the Hui ‘O Na
Wahine.
I just got back from visiting
Germany over the summer,
where I was born and raised and
where I met my wonderful
husband, Forrest, over 17 years
ago. We have two children, 15
and 8, and a Golden-doodle named Scout. Besides Germany
we have lived in Colorado, Arizona, Washington State, and
Virginia.
As a family we also volunteer a lot for the Boy Scouts of
America here on post, where my son earned his Eagle Rank
and now continuous to mentor younger Scouts.
In my free time I try to work out or hike, travel, and enjoy this
beautiful Island.
I am looking forward to a fabulous year with the Hui!
Aloha! I am Kat Fresh and I will be your Hui President. I have been married to my
soldier, Pate, for 21 years. With all of the PCS moves over the years, I can honestly
say, “I have been around.” If that doesn’t make a person a little crazy I don’t know
what does. And just to add crazy to crazy I was born in New Orleans and have a great
passion for theater. I have acted, directed, and designed– you name it and I have
probably tried it. I am looking forward to all of the fun to be had this year.
The Hui Lei Sharing the Spirit of Aloha
5 August 2015
Aloha! I am Jennifer Wurst
and I will be your
Treasurer. I’m originally
from South Carolina. Prior
to getting married to my
wonderful husband, Chris,
in 2008, I worked at
Wachovia Bank for over 10
years. Following our
wedding, my Army
adventure began in Kansas City, and has taken us to Germany,
Rhode Island, and now Hawaii. We have been on island just
over a year, and I absolutely love it here. The Army has
allowed us to live in places I’ve only dreamed of visiting.
I actually stumbled upon the Hui last summer, as I was looking
online for book clubs on or near Schofield Barracks. I
contacted the book club POC, and attended my first book club
meeting last August. I met some wonderful women who told
me about the Hui. I decided to join and attended all but one
luncheon last year. I knew after my first luncheon that I loved
getting to meet so many amazing and interesting women that
shared similar experiences and understood the military
lifestyle (this was my first exposure to a spouse’s club).
I quickly decided to become more involved after enjoying Hui
events so much last year. After taking a look at the current
board members, and considering the vacancies, I knew the
treasurer was a natural fit for my capabilities and interests.
I look forward to a fabulous year!
Aloha! My name is Chantay
Burleson. I will be serving as
the Hui Parliamentarian during
the 2015-2016 Hui Year. I
married my high school
sweetheart, Paul, 31 years ago.
Thus far, 28 of those years
have been spent as a military family and although I am I am
uber proud Military Spouse, I am looking forward to the day my
soldier comes home and says “I put in my retirement packet”
which, fingers crossed, is only a couple of years away.
We have four awesome kiddos; Derek (29) is married and lives
in NM. He has a kiddo of his own, our beautiful granddaughter,
Brooke. Chaya (18) our only daughter will begin college in
August. Cooper (16) will be entering his junior year of High
School and, public service message: just got his Hawaii driving
permit! Conor (a.k.a the R&R surprise kid) (8) will be a 3rd
grader this year. Where does the time go?
I am what some may call a habitual volunteer. In addition to
being a Hui board member I also volunteer at the Amy
Community Service and am an Army Family Team Building
instructor. I absolutely adore being part of the military
community and am also looking for more ways to be involved.
And even when retirement for my husband comes, I will
continue to be involved with military families in any way I can!
For the past two years I served as the Hui Lei Editor. This year I
will be filling the role of Parliamentarian and I am super excited
to begin my new role but even more excited for the new
fabulously fun “Hui Year” to begin.
Aloha! I am Rebecca Ferguson
and I will be your Activities and
Hospitality Chair. I have been
married to my wonderful
husband for 20 years and
we have two beautiful daughters:
Sarah, 18, who attends University
of Hawaii at Hilo on the Big Island
and Beth, 16, who is a Junior at
Leilehua High. My favorite pass
time is laying on the beach
between my breaks for looking for shells. I also enjoy crafting,
sewing, and walking for fun.
DID YOU KNOW?
The first Military Spouse Appreciation Day
was first recognized by President Ronald
Reagan on May 23, 1984 to recognize the
importance of military spouses’
commitment to the readiness and
wellbeing of military members.

6 August 2015
Aloha! I am Michelle Todsen and I am the Hui Lei Newsletter
Editor and the Publicity Chair. I joined the Hui after moving
here last summer and have made many amazing and
adventurous friends! My husband and I arrived on island last
summer and got married a week later at Kailua Beach. We
later had our formal wedding in December. We went to the
same high school in Virginia (Virginia is for lovers!) and were
prom dates, but just friends up until a couple years ago. Since
arriving to paradise, we have spent most of our weekends at
one beach or another—as long as it has waves. I work part
time doing marketing for an architecture/engineering firm. I
love hiking and exercising, I attempt to hold my own in the
big waves that my husband enjoys, I own a pink surf board,
and I enjoy planning fun-filled itineraries for my island guests!
I look forward to meeting you all and making many wonderful
memories!
I’m Dede Cornish and I will be your historian. As an avid amateur photographer, the Hui's historian position is one I enjoy fulfilling. Originally from Michigan, I was raised in New Mexico and call
Santa Fe my home. I have an Associate Degree in business with a passion for fitness and food. My son is a 23 year-old medic at Fort Hood. My husband and I live with a Labrador/Mastiff mix named Duke and a Calico cat, Missy.
Aloha! My name is
Britt Flather, I am
the Decorations
chair this year. This
is my first year on
the board, second
year as a Hui
member. Our family
arrived on the
island last August
and we are enjoying
every minute! My
hubby and I have two children and a Jackson Chameleon
named Lizzy. We enjoying watching the basking Honu in North
Shore and searching the skies for the rainbows, there are
plenty of both! My number one advice for new families on the
island is... to explore everything! We never really know how
long we have at each duty station so enjoy your time in
paradise. There is always something to see, something to do.
Just make sure you keep a few bottles of sunscreen handy!
This is looking to be a fantastic year, the board has an exciting
adventure planned! Mahalo for joining us and I look forward to
meeting you all!

Aloha! My name is
Traci LaRosa and I’m
returning as your
Reservations Chair for
a second year. This is
our second time in
Hawaii and I
absolutely love it. I’m
a personal trainer at
the Health & Fitness
Center here on post.
When I’m not at the
gym I’m hiking,
paddle boarding,
beaching it or finding
a fun place to eat. I
strive to experience everything I can here before our time is
over! I also LOVE to bake so hence…my time at the gym!
My husband and I have been married almost 18 years! We
have 4 kids - Justin (27), Ashley (21) and Hunter and Hailey
(12). I’m also a grandma to one amazing 5 year old little boy.
I’ve loved being part of the Hui and have met some amazing
friends and have had a ton of fun. I look forward to securing
your seat at our luncheons so you can have a fabulous
experience too!
Aloha! My name is Sarah Eyman
and I am continuing on as the
Hui’s Property Chair this year. I
bet you didn’t even know the
Hui had property to rent! We
have lots of stuff for parties,
coffees, and balls. So, if you are
in need, please seek me out!
I have been in Hawaii for a year
now and I’m finally starting to
feel settled. I’ve been married to my husband for 13 years,
which just so happens to be how long he has been in the Army.
We are both Florida natives, living in the state till the Army
said it was time to go after college (proud UCF Alumni—GO
KNIGHTS!). I have a BS in Elementary Education, but currently
I am a SAH Mommy to my 2 kids Riley, 9 and Kate, 4. We have
been stationed at Fort Drum, NY (my first experience with a
spouses club); Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Fort Campbell, KY
(where I was also Property Chair for the Spouses Club); and
Newport, RI. We have PCSed 7 times and lived in over 9
houses since getting married. Our favorite locations have been
in the north. I love seasons!
I was a rower in High School and College, but haven’t been
able to be in a boat since my last race in ’02. So now, I spend
my time running, working out, sewing, cooking/ entertaining ,
headed to the beach or hiking on weekends, helping out at my
children’s school, and anything that will keep me from having
to clean my house or do laundry.

I am a part Hawaiian born and raised on Oahu. I met my husband Darren when he was stationed here the first time. We’ve been married for nearly thirteen years and have two amazing children, Lucas (11) and Lillian (9). I feel blessed to finally be stationed near my family and love showing my military friends the place I love the most. I paddle out-rigger canoes, SUP, golf, and
hike and can eat my way around the island! I look forward to working with the Hui once again and meeting new friends!

TRIVIA
Aloha! My name is Carlie Lawes and I will be your Membership Chair for the year. I am originally from Southern California and my amazing husband and best friend of 17 years is originally from Hawaii. It was a dream of ours to get stationed here so that our 3 boys ages 16, 14, and 12 would have some of the same life experiences that their dad had growing up here in Hawaii. I have fully embraced the island life
with open arms and love spending my free time at the beach, hiking with friends, and always searching for a new place to eat that also serves up tasty sweets! I love fitness and teach R.I.P.P.E.D. and Spin classes at the Health and Fitness Center during the week. My boys are my life and they are very active with soccer, school, guitar, music, and growing up way too quickly. I joined the Hui ‘O Na Wahine last year and had a total blast getting to know some amazing woman, participating in some fantastic fun, and being part of a very generous and positive club. I’m looking forward to another amazing year!

Aloha! My name is Katherine Collins and I will be your Welfare Chair this year. I’m delighted to
help with the Hui’s generous welfare grants to benefit our wonderful community. This is my
second year on the Board and my eighth on island (counting previous PCSs). We love it here in
Hawaii. It is made even better by this terrific group of spouses and friends.
I am taking the reins of the Broke Da Mouth sub-club, so join us if you enjoy trying new
restaurants. We always have a blast and the food is fantastic.
I teach psychology and human development courses for universities and community colleges as
my day job. I volunteer with the Aloha Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and am
active in scouting groups with my kids.
There are so many things to do and try, you will find there is never a dull moment with these ladies!

select wines that are budget friendly but
still well made, determine how to pair
wines with different types of cuisine, and
learn how to grade wines.

HUI HAPPENINGS 2014-15
The Hui Lei Sharing the Spirit of Aloha
13 August 2015
The Huii‘O Na Wahine means club of the women. We are an all-ranks spouses club serving the 25th ID and the Scofield Barracks
community. The club began in the 1930’s and was originally an officer’s wives club. Today Hui membership is extended to all
spouses.
THE HUI ‘O NA WAHINE PURPOSE
The purpose of the Hui is to enhance the quality of life for our community by continuing in the traditions of providing a support
system for the Hui members, creating a sense of unity, developing leadership skills and the promotion of community spirit through
the coordination of revenue-producing projects to finance community needs.
THE HUI LOGO
The Hui’s logo resembles a quilt pattern and incorporates many aspects of the origins of
the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. At each corner is a taro leaf, representing the
birthplace of the Division as well as the foundation of Hawaiian life: family, or `ohana.
The lightning bolt within the taro leaves signify the lightning conquests the Division
won throughout the Pacific during World War II. The Division patch, comprised of the
taro leaf and the lightning bolt, faces out in the four cardinal directions and symbolizes
the missions and deployments by the Division today, performed all over the world.
The Pineapple, the universal symbol of hospitality and Aloha, is included between the
taro leaves as a reminder of the enduring friendship between the Army and the
Hawaiian people. At the center of the pattern is an eight-spoke cogged wheel that
represents the U.S. Army, Hawaii’s eight major subordinate commands. The spokes
surround the hub which is the U.S. Army Hawaii’s “H” patch, symbolic of all-
encompassing support rendered the Division. It is also the core of our Army community, the foundation of our family support and
includes our indispensable Army civilians.
The entire design is surrounded by eight waves, symbolic of our island home. Reverence and respect for the ocean have been part
of the Hawaii society dating back to ancient Polynesian voyagers. The eight waves tie together the eight islands that complete the
state of Hawaii, just as they tie the 25th Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Hawaii to the Hawaiian people.
This exclusive quilt design has been reproduced in wood engravings, glass products, clothing and a variety of other items that are
for sale by the Hui `O Na Wahine. We’ve had the logo printed, stitched, and etched on many different items, including golf shirts, T
-Shirts, aprons, crystal, mugs, tote bags and more. We carry seasonal logo items too.
Hui logo items can be purchased at monthly Hui luncheons and at the Thrift Store. Proceeds from the sale of Hui logo items are
dispersed into the community through our Scholarships and Welfare Grants.

Are you prepared for a Hurricane– The Storm, not the drink?
It is currently the middle of hurricane season here in Hawaii. Though landfall of a hurricane on the island is rare, it does happen.
Even if it doesn’t make land-fall, it can still create problems that everyone needs to be prepared for. The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends you and your family prepare a basic disaster supply kit and have it available
throughout the hurricane season..
The following are some recommended items to put in your kit:
Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Whistle to signal for help
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Manual can opener for food
Prescription medications and glasses
Infant formu-
la and Dia-
pers
Pet food and
extra water
for your pet
Cash or trav-
eler’s checks
and change
(no electrici-
ty = no ATM
or cash regis-
ter to run to.)
