The Husky Howl New Sarum Public School Newsletter
November 2018
New Sarum Public School—Thames Valley District School Board
October has been a very busy month here at New Sarum. Routines are well established and both staff and students are
excited about the many learning opportunities in store this school year.
Incredibly, two months have passed and the excitement of the first day of school has now changed to determination and
focus on making this school year a most successful one. Both staff and students have been working diligently in the class-
rooms, reviewing materials, learning new information and completing assignments. We are encouraging our Huskies to be
the best students and individuals they can be through focuses on Acceptance and Inclusion and Growth Mindset.
Progress Reports will be sent home with all students on Friday, November 9th. Please review your child’s report with them.
Celebrating successes and identifying one area for improvement allows for reflection and goal setting.
Use the bottom area on page 2 of the report to write down one goal that your child chooses to identify
and what reasonable steps you may take to help your child achieve this goal.
We have set aside Thursday, November 15th, in the evening, and Friday, November 16th for
parent/teacher interview times. An interview request form will be included in the progress report card
envelope. Please return the form, the report card envelope and the bottom of page 2 as soon as
possible to your child’s teacher. A notice of interview confirmation time will be sent home in advance of
November 15th. We look forward to seeing many of our families at the upcoming interview times.
As the weather changes, students are reminded to come prepared with warm coats, hats,
mittens/gloves and boots. The cooler temperatures in the early morning can make for a frosty start
waiting for the bus and on the school yard. If students come unprepared for the cooler temperatures
or hats, mittens/gloves become lost or wet throughout the day, we do have extras available in the front
foyer. Donations to our “extra” bins are always welcomed. In particular, we could use donations of
clean socks and gently used sweatpants in various sizes. Donations may be sent to the office. Thank
you for your help in this regard.
New Sarum will be holding a Remembrance Day Assembly on November 9th at 11:00 AM in our
gymnasium. Parents and/or guardians and siblings are invited to attend.
Sincerely,
Warren Zavarella Michelle Radauskas
Principal Vice Principal

. School Council
The New Sarum School Council is a group of parents and
guardians that meet monthly with the Principal and Vice-
Principal to discuss student achievement, activities, and
concerns at the school. In addition to family focused after
school events, the School Council also organizes fund-raising
ventures, and provides funding for various school projects.
School Council meetings are held on the first or second
Wednesday evening of the month at 7:00 PM in the school
library. November’s meeting will be held on Wednesday,
November 14th at 7:00 PM. All interested parents/guardians
are welcome to attend.
School Council will be having a Christmas Vendor Sale on
November 17th in the gym from 10:00 am—2:00 pm. This is a
great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping and
support the New Sarum School Council.
The School Council will also be organizing a fundraiser in
November selling dry soup mixes. The soup mixes will make
delicious, nutritious and easy suppers on those busy winter
nights. Stay tuned for more information on this fundraiser to
come home soon!
New Sarum School Improvement Goal: At New Sarum Public School, students will develop a greater understanding of the meanings, properties and representations of operations, and will use them when solving mathematical problems.

Bus Cancellations and Attendance Procedures
Remember that there will no longer be bus delays due to fog or inclement weather. Buses will
either be cancelled in the morning and run in the afternoon or they will be cancelled for the
entire day. These decisions are made by the bus companies and announced through various
media sources—My Big Yellow Bus website (mybigyellowbus.ca), Twitter, Facebook, and on the radio. We will
also send out Remind notices and post information on the school website once we know the status of the buses.
When buses are cancelled, the school will be open. However, transportation home at the end of the school day
may not be provided depending on the type of bus cancellation (morning only or all day). If you are dropping off
your child(ren) on a morning when buses are cancelled, please remember that we will have a Kiss and Drive
arrival program supervised by our staff at the back of the school. Please use this program to help us keep every-
one safe. If your student attends school on a day when there is no afternoon transportation, arrangements will
need to be made by the student’s family for afternoon pick-up. Please come into the school to pick-up your
children on these days.
If your child is not attending school when buses are cancelled, please remember to report your child’s absence
through SchoolMessenger online (www.tvdsb.ca/schoolmessenger), the App, or by phone (1-844-305-3756). Our
web attendance system will contact parents on days when buses are cancelled and students are absent, if it
hasn’t been reported. When the system calls, please mark your child absent. Please help us ensure your child is
safe and accounted for.
Cross Country
Congratulations to the Cross Country team for their performances at the Regional Cross-Country Event on October 2nd at Steen Park. All members worked their hardest and represented New Sarum as a positive and respectful school. Way to go! Our finalists Mason Matthews, Jade Tep-Chuun, Liam Langley and Piper Fish went to London to compete with the best from across the Valley. You did a great job! Thank you to parents for being flexible with picking up and drop-ping off their children. Thank you for all of your support! Ms. Bossuyt and Mrs. Scott
.
Terry Fox Run Thank you to all of the families who brought in pledge forms or raised money online for our Terry Fox Run. Alt-hough we were short of our goal of $2000, we are pleased to announce that our school community raised $1265! Because we didn't meet our goal, Mr. Zavarella doesn't have to worry about being duct taped to the wall. We want to thank him for providing this fundraising incentive, and we hope that he offers the same thing next year. On October 5th, our students participated in the Run which took place in New Sarum's school yard. Overall, this was a positive experience for our students as they learned more about a Canadian hero, Terry Fox.
On October 29th, the grade 6 and 8 classes travelled to the Growing Chefs headquarters located at the
historic Auberge Du Petit Restaurant in London! The students explored many aspects of our local food
system including the exploration of their outdoor Learning Garden. Led by a group of professional chefs,
the students prepared and later ate a delicious meal together. Kudos to all of the students for trying new
foods during this excursion.

FIRE SAFETY
Thank you to the Central Elgin Fire Department for making fire safety presentations to all of our stu-
dents on October 9, 2018. We have successfully completed all of our required fire drills for the begin-
ning of the school year. Our students and staff have practiced exiting the building in a very quick,
quiet, and efficient manner and we have received positive feedback from the fire department.
. The Great Big Crunch
On Thursday, October 18th, our Huskies participated in the Great Big Crunch.
Locally grown apples were provided to all students and staff by the Ontario School Nutrition
Program. The event helps to build awareness that all students deserve a healthy start to their
learning each and everyday. Thank you to Great Lakes Farms for providing our delicious apples.
