The Mission of the International

Baccalaureate Organization (IBO)

“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop

inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who

help to create a better and more peaceful world

through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organization works with schools,

governments and international organizations to develop

challenging programmes of international education and

rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage

students across the world to become active,

compassionate and lifelong learners who understand

that other people, with their differences, can also be

right”

IB Learner Profile

In all IB programmes, the overarching theme is the

Learner Profile (LP). The Learner Profile is a collection of

10 characteristics/attributes that are infused and

developed throughout the instruction of the IB

programme.

IB Learners strive to be:

Approaches to Learning (ATL)

Approaches To Learning are the deliberate strategies,

skills and attitudes that permeate the IB teaching and

learning environment. ATLs supports the IB belief that a

large influence on a student’s education is not only what

you learn but also how you learn. In IB classes, teachers

provide explicit support for teaching these skills.

International Baccalaureate

Diploma Program (IB DP)

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a non-

profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, which has over

3000 schools in 139 countries. In Canada there are over 300 IB

World Schools offering three programs that span the primary,

middle, and secondary school years. The IBO is a world-

renowned organization, which has come to be associated with

academic and intellectual excellence.

The IB Diploma program (IB DP) is a two-year program for

students in grades 11 and 12 and is designed to prepare students

interested in post-secondary education with the skills and

knowledge reflected in college and university programs.

The IB DP is a rigorous course of study designed to meet the

needs of highly motivated students and to promote intercultural

understanding and the ideals of responsible citizenship. The

program emphasizes education of the whole person and

focuses on the development of critical thinking skills necessary

for success in the global community.

The program encourages students across the world to become

more active, compassionate, lifelong learners. The effectiveness

of the IB DP Program is due not only to the depth of the

individual courses, but also to the comprehensive nature of the

program.

Page 7: The IB Diploma Programme...IB Diploma Programme Grades 11 and 12 (Course and Program Specific) IB Learner Profile In all IB programmes, the overarching theme is the Learner Profile

IB DP has an international acceptability, which allows for

flexibility and mobility at post-secondary institutions worldwide.

The IB curriculum includes the study of major academic

disciplines in math, science, languages and humanities. Students

will complete the mandated Alberta curriculum along with IB

syllabus and earn appropriate credits/credentials from Alberta

Education as well as the IBO. A full selection of IB courses in

numerous subject areas are available to diploma students.

There are two possible IB DP

registration options:

HL: Higher level

SL: Standard Level

Students who pursue an IB Diploma are required to take a

combination of courses that meet IB requirements including the

successful completion of 6 subjects from 6 different groups* of IB

DP subjects. Candidates must take a minimum of 3 higher level

(HL) courses and 3 standard level (SL) courses from IB subject

groups 1-6*.

Many full IB students require three 30-level sciences to meet post-

secondary requirements. Since Chemistry and Biology are

offered as IB sciences, students wishing to have three sciences

are encouraged to take Physics 20 in their grade 10 year.

Page 9: The IB Diploma Programme...IB Diploma Programme Grades 11 and 12 (Course and Program Specific) IB Learner Profile In all IB programmes, the overarching theme is the Learner Profile

TOK, CAS, and the EE are required elements to achieve an IB

Diploma. Students in the IB program write both IB final exams

and Alberta Education diploma examinations. The IB Diploma

Programme is recognized worldwide by universities and students

may receive advanced placement and/or advanced credits for

outstanding achievement.

*Students may choose to replace a Group 6 subject with a

second subject from Group 4 (Sciences).

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

This course engages students in a critical reflection of

themselves as Knowers. It also challenges them to reflect

critically on the different areas of knowledge and ways of

knowing. Students will further enquire into the problems of

knowledge and consider the role knowledge plays in a global

society. As part of this enquiry, students will examine the truth

of knowledge claims and learn the basis for well-grounded

judgments as they recognize the need to act responsibly in

an interconnected world.

TOK Advantage

Students completing TOK 35 will fulfill the requirement for

Religion 35, a required component for the Edmonton Catholic

School District for students to receive their Alberta High School

Diploma.

Page 11: The IB Diploma Programme...IB Diploma Programme Grades 11 and 12 (Course and Program Specific) IB Learner Profile In all IB programmes, the overarching theme is the Learner Profile

Extended

Essay

The extended essay is an in-depth, independently researched

investigation of a focused topic. It is intended to promote

high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and

creativity. It is a major piece of formally presented, structured

writing at the university level of approximately 4000 words.

(approximately 7 pages) Students develop university level

research, essay formatting and writing skills over a prolonged

period with the individualized guidance of an advisor to assist

them with the process.

Creativity, Activity and Service

(CAS)

CAS documents a candidate’s extracurricular involvements,

which also require a reflection of personal skill growth. There

are seven objectives that

must be met as part of

their voluntary

experiences. Through

CAS, students are

provided with an

opportunity to contribute

to the community and

develop personal skills.

IB Diploma Programme

Course Candidate

Students may participate in a partial IB DP program whereby

they only register in individual IB subjects. Course candidates

may choose one or more subjects and are not required to take

TOK, EE, or CAS components of the program, but may choose to

enroll in them if they choose. Students enrolled in the IB Course

program choose only those IB courses they have a strong interest

in and are academically successful. Students write IB exams

and Alberta Diploma exams in these subjects.

The advantage of an IB Certificate program is that students

choose to take an IB course in one or more courses that they

have a passion for without the program load of a full Diploma

candidate. They are exposed to those aspects of the program

that improve critical thinking, time management and learning

skills. Successful candidates receive subject-specific IB

Certificates that may be recognized for advanced placement

and/or advanced credits for outstanding achievement in that

subject.
