Editor's Message Significant events affecting our deaf chess community came up recently, which shall be shared with you, the readers, now. The much-anticipated vote decision on a proposal by Croatia to include chess into the program of the Deaflympic Games at the 44th ICSD Congress, which was held this past July in Sofia, Bulgaria, did not take place. In the presence of the Congress delegates from 74 different countries and our President, Mr. Visco as an observer, Mr. Craig Crowley, the now ex-ICSD President, disappointed everyone by handling the proposal in a questionable manner. Mr. Crowley did not prepare himself well to face and deal with this important proposal at the Congress floor. Therefore, no appropriate action was taken upon it. However, the issue of the Croatian proposal is still an open one and the ICCD sincerely hopes that the newly-elected ICSD President, Dr. Valery Rukhledev, will in the near future do something with his new Executive Committee by accepting and approving the game of chess into the official Deaflympic Games program. Mr. Phillip Gardner, our Vice President, made an on-site inspection trip to Opatija, Croatia, which will be the main venue of the upcoming 17th ICCD Deaf Chess Olympiad. It is hoped that the event in Opatija managed and run by our distinguished colleague and great chess player, Mr. Zlatko Klaric, will be well organized and well-attended by many country-members. However, to avoid further confusion or misunderstanding, the ICCD advises every country-member to carefully review and study information, especially the use of hotel facilities and relevant chess rules, related to this major event by clicking to this website

www.wdtc2014.org Another interesting news was that recently a member of our ICCD family Mr. Ferenc Frink from Hungary ( he was a member of our Men's 2012 ICCD World All Stars Team at the 40th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Turkey ) took part at the European Blitz Chess Championship among the Senior hearing people, in which he finished in a respectable fourth place. Our hats off to Mr. Frink! Elsewhere in these Bulletin issue pages you will find results and photos of recently-held international and national chess events among our members, including the key events held in Kaunas, Lithuania, and Dresden, Germany. As in the past and in order to make our future Bulletin issues interesting and informative ones, I am again appealing to you to send to my office the news items, including results of your national championships as well as photos. Note this fact that in this ongoing issue we have published results of national championships from our 12 country-members out of 36, which, naturally, is a quite discouraging statistics! In the meantime, our ICCD President and Board members wish each of you a very pleasant, prosperous and healthy New 2014 Year.

THEY DEPARTED US

The following persons have departed us recently: GERMANY - Willi Koch died on August 27, 2013, at the age of 93; he played for Club Essen for the European Championships held in 1973 in Essen and in 1979; he also represented as a delegate the Federal Republic of Germany at the 19th ICSC Congress held in 1988 in Stockholm, Sweden and the 20th ICSC Congress held in 1990 in Veszprem, Hungary. Broska Karl-Werner died on October 2, 2013, at the age of 65; he was President of G.S.V. ( Germany National Deaf Sports Organization ); he also represented Germany as its delegate at the 30th ICSC Congress held in 2010 in Estoril, Portugal. RUSSIA - Krasnov Vasily Grigorievich died at the age of 73; a native of St. Petersburg ( formerly, Leningrad ) he was many times champion of the Soviet Union and Russian Federation; he also was a member of the Russian teams - the three times champions of the ICCD Chess Olympiads held in 1998 ( Lucerne, Switzerland ), 2002 ( Vilnuis, Lithuania ) and 2006 ( Nyiergyhaza, Hungary ). UKRAINE - Popov Viktor Kyrylovych died on 06.03.2013, at the age of 72; he represented Ukraine at the ICCD Deaf Chess Olympiad two times: in 1998 ( Lucerne, silver medal ), 2002 ( Vilnius ,bronze medal ) and 2006 ( Nyiregyhaza , 4th place ).
