400 Years with No Spoken Word

• Seemingly, God had not spoken between the Testaments.

• Then, along came John,

For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare

the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'"

(Matthew 3.3, ESV)Monday, April 10, 2023

John’s Mission of Immersion

• He prepared the way for Christ.– He opened a highway for Christ. (Isaiah

40.3; Matthew 3.3)

• He brought the preaching of repentance and baptism for remission of sins. (Matthew 3.6; Mark 1.4)

• He shook up the world. (John 1.19-36)

Along comes Jesus

• Having walked an estimated 60+ miles to meet John, Jesus waits for His fulfillment.

“But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill

all righteousness." Then he consented.”(Matthew 3.15, ESV)

The Trinity is Present

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the

water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and

coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well

pleased." (Matthew 3.16-17, ESV)

From Fulfillment to Trial

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the

devil.

(Matthew 4.1, ESV)

Can the Spirit tempt anyone?

• Take note the spirit did not tempt.

• The Spirit led Jesus for testing so Hebrews 4.15 could be written.

– When is the last time your approached Jesus?

• Notice the Devil talked with Christ. (Matthew 4.3)

– When is the last time you talked with Christ?

• Notice the Devil knew Scripture (Matthew 4.6)

– Do you know the Scriptures?

Three Temptations – One Goal

• The temptation of food. (Matthew 4.3,4)

• The temptation of power. (Matthew 4.5-7)

• The temptation of wealth. (Matthew 4.8-10)

The Goal – Conquering Christ

The Result – A defeated Satan!

Did the Temptations Work?

For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our

infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet

without sin.

(Hebrews 4.15, ESV)

Remember…

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the

temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to

endure it. (1 Corinthians 10.13, ESV)
