The Structure and function of protocadherins. Protocadherins are cell-adhesion molecules. Their morphogenetic capacity is accomplished by their bipartite structure, which is very similar to that of classical cadherins. Besides a transmembraneous section they have an N-terminal extracellular part consisting of six domains and a C-terminal intracellular domain.
The protocadherin genes. We distinguish three classes of protocadherins: alpha, beta and gamma. In the genome there are three serially repeated V-gene sets, each followed by corresponding C-genes.
