[email protected] Fiddling in Lent Devotion by Leslie Neugent And Jesus said to the Pharisees, “Why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your traditions?” Mahew 15: 3 God… has made us competent to be minis- ters of a new covenant, not of leer but of spirit; for the leer kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Cor 3.6 Throughout the gospels, we find Jesus wrestling with the many complex and bur- densome traditions established by the Phar- isees that ruled all aspects of daily life back in his day. He spent a lot of time pointing out that what the Apostle Paul called “the spirit of the law” is to be valued over the “leer of the law.” But as we all know, old habits die hard. In his book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain said this about the stub- bornness of tradition, “The less there is to justify a traditional custom, the harder it is to get rid of it.” Ain’t that the truth? This devotion is part of our 2016 Lent Study Guide, “Fiddler on the Roof: Finding a Place to Stand.” Study Guides are available today in the East entrance and Piper Library for a $15 donation, and online at www.wayzata- communitychurch.org/lentstudyguide. Our Called to Care ministry has involved many WCC members through the years. On Thursday, March 3 we will have a conversation in the Colonnade for those who have already received training and for those of you who are curious to know more. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. for a light supper and to talk about ways we can reach out to our community.
