6. Samuel Slater (factory diagram 336)

In 1789 Samuel Slater was a 21 year-old

apprentice in Arkwright’s textile mill in England.

Samuel Slater memorized the design of the machinery in the mill.

Slater disguised himself and traveled to New York.

While traveling on the Atlantic Slater drew the mill from memory.

Once in America, Slater recreated Arkwright’s mill for wealthy Quaker Cotton Mill owner, Moses Brown.

The Moses Brown Cotton Mill

Moses Brown-- wealthy Quaker -- inefficient cotton mill-- Rhode Island-- wanted efficient mill -- Brown hired Slater.

Slater = new mill with 72 spindles powered by falling water on the river in Pawtucket.

THIS WAS THE FIRST FACTORY IN AMERICA!

7. interchangeable parts – parts made alike so they can be changed and replaced with other parts.

Example: guns, farm equipment

INVENTORS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTON

James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny.

Richard Arkwright invented the water frame and added it to the spinning jenny

Edmund Cartwright invented the steam powered loom for weaving cotton.

Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin.

James Watt of Scotland improved the design of the steam engine and made it practical for use

Oliver Evans built the first high-pressure steam engine for powering machinery. Now factories no longer need water power.

THE AMERICAN INDUSTRIALREVOLUTION

8. The first factories in America had to be built near water because energy was generated using nearby rivers.

Before the American Industrial Revolution, the colonies depended on Britain for manufactured goods.

The British did not want there to be industry in America. It would cut into their profits.

9. The Life of the Factory Worker

Page 13: The Industrial Revolution 1.The Industrial Revolution large growth in industry, factory system, and technology British inventors developed new machinery.

ARTISANS BECOME EXTINCT

Machines replaced the skills of craftsmen and pride in one’s work decreased as unskilled workers filled the workplace.

Workers tended machines performing the same tasks over and over taking little pride in their work because they did not make a completed product.

With the succession of Florida to the U.S. and Mexico’s Independence from Spain, the U.S. was not threatened at all with Spanish colonies in the Western Hemisphere. One by one, many of Spain’s colonies gained

independence.

Page 40: The Industrial Revolution 1.The Industrial Revolution large growth in industry, factory system, and technology British inventors developed new machinery.

22. Justify the Monroe Doctrine

Americans feared Spain would want to regain control of colonies.

New Latin American governments not yet stable.

Russia claimed land on Pacific Coast, and U.S. worried that they may intefere.
