iPad-‐a-‐thon Our iPad-‐a-‐thon is off to a fantastic start with enough money raised to purchase 5 additional iPads for the school. Families who have paid a voluntary contribution by Week 9 will be entered into the prize draw which will be drawn in Week 10 of this term. Access to readily available technology in classrooms makes a positive difference to the educational outcomes of children by having a world of knowledge at their fingertips -‐ our aim is to have 1 iPad for every 5 students in the school -‐ we can achieve this with your help. Thank you to the parents and caregivers who have contributed, please keep those payments coming in. Breakfast Club Breakfast Club is a welfare program offering a light breakfast to students who may have missed out on eating breakfast before arriving at school. Students are provided with 1 slice of toast with spread per day. The school encourages students to eat a wholesome breakfast at home before coming to school but we understand that at times this is not possible and this is when Breakfast Club can be utilised. The Breakfast Club program relies on donations from families, local businesses and charities. We are always seeking donations so if you are able to support this program in any way, please come and see Mrs Pritchard or myself. The school acknowledges the support of parent volunteers in running this program.

Zone Cross Country It was a sunny Friday, the 8th of May, when a bunch of students from I.P.S attended the zone cross country at Eschol Park. It was really challenging to run 3km and some students successfully qualified for the regionals while others just missed out. We had a lot of fun and we did an amazing job representing our school. We had a lot of encouragement from Miss Morley and Mrs Lamb, so thank you to them. Have a look at the successful people who qualified for regionals below.

The Silver Brumby Written by Elyne Mitchell
The Silver Brumby is the first book of the classic series starring Thowra the great silver Brumby. Thowra was born in the wild wind in which his mother, Bel Bel, named him after. This inspiring book shows us the life of a brumby (wild horse) in the wild mountains of NSW’s snowfields near Mt Kosciuzko. As Thowra grows, so does his herd, wisdom, friends and enemies. Legends are also formed by the men with their cattle, stockwhips, ropes and wish to capture and train the silver brumby. None had ever been like Thowra king of the brumbies and none ever will be. Man will not stop haunting the silver brumbies. The author was the famous Elyne Mitchell who was a ‘champion skier, a writer of numerous books for adults, a committed conservationist-‐environmentalist and a mother of 4.’ She produced on average a book every 2 years using the typewriter. She had published 35 books in total. She rode horses up until a few months before her death, so Elyne had the knowledge to start this amazing series. She was working on her 36th book when she passed away at an age of 89 in 2002. Nevertheless she had completed her life goal in doing service and achieving a good name for her
country. To this day, Australia has held Elyne Mitchell’s books to be read over and over again. I give this 4 out of 4 hooves of Thowra the magnificent silver stallion.

ANZAC Day Commemorations in Yangon, Myanmar
Students who attended the 2014 Stage 3 Camp went to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. While they were there they inscribed message on wooden crosses that were sent to the Rangoon Cemetery in Yangon, Myanmar (formally known as Burma). The crosses were placed on the graves of 13 ANZAC soldiers who were buried there. The remainder of crosses were placed Australian children attending the service on the headstones of the unknown servicemen.

Writer Spotlight This week the Journalism Club asked 4K to provide a piece of writing from a talented student. This is Onuka’s text discussing animals in cages.
Should Animals be in Cages or Zoos?
It is horrible to keep sad, lonely animals in small and dark cages because they are taken away from their family and their freedom. It is awful to keep scared animals in cages, away from their natural habitat, and away from the wild. Instead they are stuck in dirty cages. What if you were stuck in a small dirty and dark cage, how would you feel? For example, some animals are kept in cages at circuses and are whipped, which is a horrible thing to do to animals. It is barbaric to keep scared animals away from their family because they are lonely and petrified. What if you were taken from your family and friends? It would not be nice at all, that feeling is just what animals would feel, devastated and frightened. In conclusion it is horrible to keep frightened animals in cages because they are lonely and scared. We should stop animals getting stuck in small and dark cages.
