Charrettes Teambuilding with Assessment Dorothy Hayden Assistant Director of Career Services Virginia Military Institute Regardless of your membership type in VACE you have likely gone through a programor a process with a goal of making improvements to save time money or increase thevalue proposition I recently attended an interactive assessment workshop with Dr TimBurrows on using charrettes for program and process improvements The exercise wasan energizing experience for me I would like to share some of what I learned about thecharrette process I would be happy to talk more about this process with you First yoursquore likely wondering what is a charrette Charrette is French for the wordcart Charrettes are used in archaeology as a means to take an item from one site toanother where a group can carefully review and discuss their findings The charretteprocess can be applied to work with program assessment and process improvements During our training Dr Burrows provided a brief primer on assessment and anoverview of how the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA)conducts the charrette process The idea of assessing a program or process can seemvery individual and isolating but the charrette process is meant to be a mix of groupdiscussion and individual feedback Herersquos how the charrette process can be most effective in a small group of no morethan 5-6 people

1 Invite members of the group to bring an example of a program or a process thatthey will present to the group as their charrette

2 Each group member will receive a charrette feedback sheet The NILOA sheetincludes 4 questions Click here to view the questions The questions arefocused on an assignment but program or process could be easily substituted forthe word assignment

3 Each group member will have about 3 minutes to provide an overview of theassignmentprogram

4 After the presenter speaking finishes talking about the assignment groupmembers can ask questions and provide recommendations

5 Once conversation ends the observers will fill out the sheet with 4 questionsThe questions will be returned to the presenter

My takeaway I completed this exercise with a group that did not have the same levelof awareness of my topic It was refreshing to use a different lens to talk to facultyabout my program It is critical that we not only seek feedback within our offices butwe venture out to our partners and seek their feedback Helpful Resources from Dr Burrows and Dorothy Hayden NILOA Article on Charrettes from February 2017 httpwwwlearningoutcomeassessmentorgNILOA_In_the_field_Virginia_MSC_Charrettehtml Kuh G D Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education SanFrancisco Jossey-Bass
