COVERSTORY 1

Dutch Design Week Delights

Eindhoven was carved into four areas, namely, the Strijp, Central Station, WitteDame and Stadhuisplein, with most locations being walking distance from each other.

Strijp is the creative heart of Eindhoven with many well-known designers, artists and inspired folk setting up base in this former Philips complex. A prominent attraction of this venue was the Klokgebouw, an exhibition of work by up-and-coming talent as well as established designers. This is also where Piet Hein Eek, one of Holland’s most prominent designers, has his studio. This maverick designer’s workplace is more of a design destination in itself; it hosts a restaurant, shop, art gallery and also serves as a collaborative space for other designers, making it a buzzing centre for numerous activities.

The WitteDame was a former Philips light bulb factory, and during the design week played host to the Graduation Show of the Design Academy of Eindhoven. On display was inspiring work and conceptual design by 153 young designers. Also at this venue was an exhibit called the Bit Rush which looked at the role of design in the ‘post digital age.’

At the Central Station was the Eindhoven University of Technology, where recent graduates of Industrial Design emphasised the role of technology and how it is likely to be used in a socio-cultural and business context in the future. While the Stadhuisplein hosted a unique exhibition where prominent designers (Maarten Baas and Piet Hein Eek amongst others) showed their work alongside people of the past who had inspired them as well as young emerging talent whose creations impressed them.

With so many different design

events happening all at one go, it was diffi cult to see all of them, leave alone write about everything. For more information on what was on show during this design extravaganza please visit their website, or better still, make sure you are here next year! Contact: web: www.ddw.nl

After creating a market leading position for themsleves in the sanitaryware market, HSIL

Ltd announced the launch of its new luxury brand Queo in Mumbai on November 3. Inaugurating the company’s new venture were Sandip Somany, Joint Managing Director of HSIL Ltd. and Architect Hafeez Contractor. The launch marked the beginning of HSIL’s import plans into the luxury bath space of the country. The new venture is a result of HSIL’s acquisition of the UK-based, sanitary-ware manufacturer Barwood Products Ltd. last year.

“It gives me immense pleasure to bring the luxury bath space brand Queo to India. We acquired Bar-wood Products last year and we feel it is now time to bring its luxury prod-uct portfolio here,” said Somany. “We will be exclusively importing and marketing Queo products in India, this is an important element of our market strategy and our busi-

ness plan to carve out a dominant position in the luxury bath space segment. We will build upon the intrinsic strengths of Queo in key markets and continue to delight our customers with its innovative designs and great product features.”

Queo is a luxury bathware brand, but with a difference. While it de-fi nes the modern homeowner’s need for sleek contemporary bath fi ttings, it also, in the same breath acts on the concept of intuition. The brand’s belief of ‘On intuition’ is defi ned in various designs spread through the Queo collection. Reputed product designers of the likes of Federico Tombolini, C. Valeri and Romano Andolini have designed for Queo.

The Queo product range con-sists of 3 product series designed by these international designers: F-Morwen series, F-50 series and

F-Concept series. The F-Morwen series has been

designed in a way that the angularity of the products is evident, symbol-ising a modern design. The F-50 series highlights alluring edges in the products with minimalistic curves. While the F-Concept series displays the shapely, curved projections of the products to bring alive the interplay of light and dark.

Other Queo products include stylishly designed series for contem-porary bathrooms, like the Felisa series, Zinnia series, Orca series, Alla Moda series and Al Bano series.

Priced between Rs.15,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, Queo will be soon available across

the country in leading showrooms.Contact: Unit No 301-302, III Floor, Park Centra, Sector 30, N.H-8,Gurgaon, Haryana - 122001tel: (124) 4779200web: www.hindwarehomes.com

Against a backdrop of the stunning city of Barcelona, the World Architecture

Fest ival opened its doors to hundreds of delegates from across the globe between the 2nd and 4th of November. An exciting format saw some of the most creative architectural fi rms make live presentations to a select panel of judges. Visitors to the fest had a fi eld day watching the shortlisted architects from Japan to Jordan and Netherlands to Namibia presenting their concepts and ideas to the jury.

The Ind ian a rch i t ec tura l fraternity too was extremely well represented with 37 entries making their way to the competition, and 12 projects shortlisted to make fi nal presentations at Barcelona. The fi rm of Lotus Praxis Initiative, based in Delhi, trumped the World Holiday Building of the Year category for their luxury boutique hotel, Raas, located in Jodhpur, India. The fi rm was rewarded for their winning effort which oversaw the restoration of 17th and 18th century structures using traditional crafts and materials, as well as introducing new buildings that worked as contemporary counterpoints to the heritage site. A colour palette of the local Jodhpur Sandstone in all its hues and textures, worked upon by local artisans set the tone for this exceptional luxury getaway.

Sanjay Puri Architects had two shortlisted projects in the Future Projects Commercial category and was rewarded with a Category Commendation for their project Biome in this category. Biome is a planned administrative offi ce at a factory site in Rajasthan. The futuristic building is designed

From all the shortlisted entries across the different categories, the

Media-ICT building in Barcelona was selected as the World Building of the Year. Designed by the fi rm Cloud 9 from Spain, this construction is built from the top and moves downwards, becoming transparent, anti-gravitational and almost liquid at the bottom. Its impact on the street is minimal, about 8% mass with respect to the 1500 m2 fl oor surface area. Unlike most buildings which consume huge amounts of energy, the Media-ICT is designed with excellent ‘green’ credentials. Enric Ruiz-Geli of Cloud 9, commented that his building should be seen as a ‘seed for an environmental revolution’. He said, “if it doesn’t happen, we will not succeed with our fi ght against global warming.”

The World Architure Festival also had a People’s Choice Award which

was won by Memorial House Todor Proeski. Designed by Syndicate Studio from Macedonia, this winning building commemorates a singer who was killed in a car crash four years ago. How many times have you heard the word unique and wondered what unique

meant? Something unique needs to be special; one of a kind and in today’s world which is so full of a market of mass production, there is little chance that your precious possession would be considered unique in any way. Following the true meaning of unique is Tejal Mathur, an interior designer who has won the hearts of her clients with her

Tejal Mathur firmly believes

in keeping it simple. Her work showcases that. Chest of drawers made of wood and the fi nishing kept rough yet chic can be beautiful yet rustic. Her designs defi ne the very

essence of natural and unique. As she explains, “The way each part of the furniture ages can never be the same with another piece of furniture.” The perfection in her design doesn’t

come from smooth mass produced surfaces, but from the natural edges that she chooses to retain.

Mathur’s designs defi ne modern living. While today’s generation prefers rusticity, it also aspires a certain quotient of style and luxury

It was around the 1970s when Mahendra Doshi decided to collect old furniture rotting

orphaned in the streets of Chor Bazaar. It was just a passion for him with no business in mind. Hailing from a family deep into the construction business, it was easier for Doshi to fi nd spots to showcase

his work. Work that gave life to old furniture and restored the colonial art forms which were quickly going out of fashion. After four decades, it is Anand Gandhi who has taken the painstaking job of retaining the work that his friend, philosopher and guide started. A full-fl edged business still infused with the passion that existed 40 years back, along with Ajit Doshi, Chiki Doshi and Asim Doshi.

Mahenoshi’s Giriraj showroom is a gold mine for everything old. With two levels of old aged furniture awaiting restoration, the place smells and feels like a library which stocks classic novels. Lanes and lanes of old chairs, pots, tables, doors, cabinets and knick knacks, every piece makes you wonder that same thing, “Is there any life left in it?”

For the carpenters who painstakingly take each piece apart, clean, repair and put them back together, it is a lifestyle, not a job.

“Each carpenter is trained and we have a lot working here for generations. The first generation of carpenters learnt the restoration process along with Mahendra Doshi and then it has been passed down,” shares Anand Gandhi. “We don’t hire carpenters just like that. They all come via word of mouth.”

Each piece of furniture goes through a tedious process of makeover. “We take at least 8-10 weeks for each piece of restoration. Every piece of furniture that goes out of this organisation is top in quality. We take our time on our work. Each piece of work needs a lot of hard work and there is no substitute to

it,” explains Chiki Doshi.Next in line for Mahendra Doshi

Restorateurs is a show in Goa which will be completely dedicated to the art and furniture taken from Goa and restored. Scheduled in December, around 50-60 pieces of furniture will travel from Mumbai to Goa to remind the current generation of homeowners the tradition and heritage they are letting go of. “We have named it (the show) Back to Goa and will display old pieces from Goa which we have restored. We want to take more shows to other cities as well - like Pune for instance,” shares Doshi.

With modern sleek furniture soon becoming the norm for contemporary households, it is upto the Doshis and Gandhi to make sure that the true culture and art of India doesn’t get lost. “We don’t want old furniture to go out of the country,” shares Doshi. “It’s a constant process of acquiring and restoring and it needs a lot of work. We still don’t consider this to be a business. It’s something we love doing.”Contact: Giriraj (Basement)201 Walkeshwar RoadNear Teen Batti, Mumbai 400006tel: (022) 23630526email: [email protected]

Co. Profile

Supreme Industries, has been providing durable, cost effective and environment friendly

products for the construction industry for over six decades. The fi rm has its ‘DURA’ range of civil products that truly represents the word ‘durable.’ Manufactured in the most environment-friendly manner and constantly upgrading the product mix to meet current challenges and facilitate the best solutions, the company strives to offer products that are best suited to the clients’ requirement - like its latest offering DURAmembrane.

DURAmembrane is a new generation, cost effective solution for waterproofing of basements and roofs. It is a versatile material, capable of retaining the dryness of concrete, masonry, metal and wood structures. It is also resistant to salts, alkalis and various types of acids. In fact, the product is a high performance, composite polymeric membrane with a quick and easy-to-apply system, ensuring hassle-free installation and maximum productivity.

The company l aunched this new product as there was a continuous demand from many of their satisfied customers to develop waterproofing solutions

to solve leakage problems in their factories and offi ces. Consumers were not satisfi ed with the existing waterproofi ng systems available in the market after which company’s research and development team started working full-fledged on this project to develop a composite of various polymers cross linked and fused, resulting in this high performance membrane.

The most striking advantage of the product is that it can be used in new constructions and also at the time of repairing old structures. Supreme Industries, which is the only manufacturer of this type of waterproofi ng membrane in India, suggests the use DURAmembrane for applications including concrete

bathrooms, and terrace gardens. DURAmembrane is a high

performance composite polymeric membrane, which is durable, lightweight, non-deteriorating, punctures resistant and is available in length stretching up-to 50 meters. It is now an accepted fact that bitumen disintegrates after contact with water and also catches fungi after which it starts melting during summer due to the reduction of its puncture resistant strength. In contrast, DURAmembrane has a very good puncture resistance of 199 N (Test method - ASTM E154: 1999) and because it is polymer based it won’t deteriorate.

That apart , none of the waterproofing solution systems provide any added advantage except waterproofing whereas DURAmembrane is not only 100% waterproof but also an excellent insulating material. Its ‘K’ value does not deteriorate because of its inherent closed cell structure that ensures truly effective thermal insulation and waterproofi ng for a life time.

In view of the unpredictable climatic conditions in India where the ambient temperature varies between 0 to 50°C, the overlying treatment must withstand the corresponding variation in temperature from 1 to 65°C. DURAmembrane meets these challenges with complete ease and can withstand temperature ranging from -40 to +115°C. Any roof treatment has to contend with the unrelenting assault of surface expansion and contraction due to daily or seasonal temperature variations. Further, roof treatments have to withstand more than just surface expansion and contraction including structural movements during sudden drop in temperature resulting in thermal shocks. DURAmembrane has an excellent elongation and tensile strength that enables it to take all movements in its stride. It is fracture, crumble, shatter and abrasion proof and resistant to

monsoons, problems like leakage and seepage in roofs, walls, basements, bathrooms both in commercial and residential buildings including factories, is a common feature. After every shower of rain, structures tend to expose their limitations and fl aws, in fact, test buildings reveal that these defects are not normally observed during sunny days. To avoid huge expenses and damage to the structure people are increasingly addressing waterproofi ng solutions prior to the next rains.

DURAmembrane being the fi rst of its kind concrete roof and basement waterproofing product is also designed to withstand the hot and humid Indian conditions. Cement Prices Push Up Costs For Real Estate Companies By 20%

Construction costs for real estate developers have gone up by 15-20% in the last three months because of a steep rise in cement prices, says the National Real Estate Development Council(NAREDCO).

The industry body claims that cement manufacturers have increased the price of cement by `100 per bag in the last three months and are also creating an artificial scarcity of cement in the market, leading to project delays.

Navin Raheja, president of NAREDCO, alleged that cement companies have a formed a cartel and have raised prices saying the cost of one of their main inputs, coal, has gone up. While cement prices have been going up since August, coal prices have only started rising since mid-October. The industry body has now lodged a formal complaint with the Competition Commission of India against cement manufacturers.

Last month, another real estate industry body, Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India, had also approached CCI, asking for an enquiry into the artificial shortage of cement and the abnormal price increase by cement manufacturers. “We are yet to get a response from CCI,” says Geetambar Anand, vice-president of Credai.

Cement prices have gone up from `180 per bag in August to `280 per bag in October. There is a shortage of cement in the market because of which cement manufacturers are not giving any credit line to developers who are being forced to pay upfront, and in some cases wait for up to 15 days for deliveries of cement bags.
