NANO is SMALL• The Greek word nanos means dwarf

• 1 nanometer = 10-9 m = 0.000000001 m

Nanobox

Nanoscience-Nanotechnologies can be defined as science and engineering on the 100’s of nanometers scale and below

Interdisciplinary

• Nanoscience is an interdisciplinary research area involving disciplines such as physics, chemistry, molecular biology, medicine and materials science.

• To do research in before mentioned disciplines it is necessary to be interdisciplinary.

• In nanoscience the boundaries between the classical disciplines are wiped out.

• Interdisciplinary skills are increasingly demanding skills requested by the industry and research community.

iNANO research areas

• Nano-Energy-materials– Catalysis, energy storage, solar cells, thermoelectric-materials

• NanoFood – Biosensors, anti-biofouling surfaces, functional food, food safety

• NanoMedicine– Drug delivery and design, diagnostics, biocompatible materials

• Functional Nano-materials– Nanocoatings, tribological coatings, nano-composits,

polymers, nano-fibers, atomic-scale design of materials.

• Nano-photonics and nano-electronics – Semiconductor nanocrystals

• Self-assembled molecular nano-structures– DNA nanostructures, 2D molecular surface structures
