THE INTERNATIONAL DAHLIA REGISTER (1969)

EIGHTEENTH SUPPLEMENT

The following list contains the names of Dahlia cultivars registered between1 January 2006 and 31 December 2006. It is issued as the EighteenthSupplement to the International Dahlia Register (published in 1969 as aTentative Classified List and International Register of Dahlia Names).

Raisers and introducers of new plants are urged to ensure that all theirplants have been registered and are reminded that registration should takeplace beforea plant is released or its name is mentioned in print. Registrationconcerns all named cultivars.

Registration forms can be obtained from the International DahliaRegistrar, RHS Garden Wisley, Woking, Surrey GU23 6QB, England.

In this list the cultivar name is preceded by an indication of the group towhich the plant belongs, as defined in the 1969 Register, which is repeatedbelow as amended. The line below begins with the parentage, when known,in parenthesis. The names of the raiser, introducer (where applicable) andregistrant follow, together with the relevant dates (R = raiser, H = hybridizer,G = grown to first flower by, N = named by, I = introducer, REG = registrant).Where a date is given without a name (eg I & REG: 2006) it can be assumedthat the individual or firm involved is that immediately preceding it,eg R: Y. Konishi, I & REG: 2006, in which Y. Konishi raised the plant andthen introduced it and registered the name in 2006. Details of flowerdiameter and stem height are included, where supplied by the registrant.

We wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance given by Miss Yoko Otsukiof Jericho, Oxford in confirming the precise orthography of the Japanesecultivar names which appear in this Supplement.

Nomenclatural standardsThis Supplement records the designation of nomenclatural standards forsome of the newly registered cultivars. Nomenclatural standards are a wayto fix the application of a new name by reference to a particular exampleof a plant. They may take the form of herbarium specimens, but can alsobe paintings or a permanent photographic record as stated in theInternational Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (2004), where this ismore appropriate. All the nomenclatural standards designated here are heldin the Herbarium, RHS Garden Wisley (WSY).

Note: An asterisk * after the name of a cultivar defines that such cultivarhas not thus far been registered with the International Cultivar RegistrationAuthority. This is particularly relevant in recording the parentage of a cultivarwhen occasionally one or both named cultivars may not be registered.

GROUP CLASSIFICATION AND FORMATION

Group 1 – Single-flowered dahliasSingle dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of florets, which mayoverlap, the centre forming a disc.

Group 2 – Anemone-flowered dahliasAnemone-flowered dahlias have blooms with one or more outer rings ofgenerally flattened ray florets surrounding a dense group of tubularflorets, which are longer than the disc florets in Single dahlias, andshowing no disc.

Group 3 – Collerette dahliasCollerette dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of generally flatray florets, which may overlap, with a ring of small florets (the Collar),the centre forming a disc.

Group 4 – Waterlily dahliasWaterlily dahlias have fully double blooms characterised by broad andgenerally sparse ray florets, which are straight or slightly involute alongtheir length giving the flower a shallow appearance. The depth should beless than half the diameter of the bloom.

Group 5 – Decorative dahliasDecorative dahlias have fully double blooms showing no disc. The rayflorets are generally broad, and flat and may be involute for no morethan 75% of their length (longitudinal axis), or slightly twisted andusually bluntly pointed.

Group 6 - Ball dahliasBall dahlias have fully double blooms, ball shaped or slightly flattened. The ray florets are blunt or rounded at the tips, with margins spirallyarranged and involute for at least 75% of the length of the florets.

Group 7 – Pompon dahliasPompon dahlias have fully double, spherical blooms of miniature size, with florets involute for the whole of their length (longitudinal axis).

Group 8 – Cactus dahliasCactus dahlias have fully double blooms, the ray florets are usuallypointed, the majority narrow and revolute for 50% or more of theirlength (longitudinal axis) and either straight or incurving.

Group 9 – Semi-cactus dahliasSemi-cactus dahlias have fully double blooms, the ray florets are usuallypointed, and revolute for more than 25% of their length and less than50% of their length (longitudinal axis), broad at base and either straightor incurving.

Group 10 – Miscellaneous dahliasAny dahlias which do not fall into one of the listed groups eg Orchid-flowered, Paeony-flowered dahlias, etc.

2

d Dahlia 18th supp pagenos 10/7/07 12:00 Page 2

Group 11 – Fimbriated dahliasFimbriated dahlias have blooms where ray florets should be evenly splitor notched into two or more divisions, uniformly throughout the bloomto create a fringed overall effect. The petals may be flat, involute, revolute, straight, incurving or twisted.

Group 12 – Single Orchid (Star) dahliasStar or Single Orchid dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of floretssurrounding the disc. Ray florets are uniformly either involute or revolute.

Group 13 – Double Orchid dahliasDouble Orchid dahlias have fully double blooms, showing no disc, thathave triangular centres. Ray florets are narrowly lanceolate and eitherinvolute or revolute.

Lilliput dahliasA low-growing type of dahlia usually no more than 0.3m in heighthaving single, semi-double or double florets attaining 26mm (1 inch) orso in diameter. Especially suitable for borders or display in containers onpatios, etc. Sometimes referred to as ‘baby’ or ‘top-mix’ types of dahlia.

GROUPS AND SIZES

Certain groups have been subdivided and these, with their relative sizes, are as follows:-

Waterlily dahlias (group 4), Decorative dahlias (group 5),Cactus dahlias (group 8), Semi-cactus dahlias (group 9) andFimbriated dahlias (group 11)A Giant-flowered – usually exceeding 250mm (10in) in diameterB Large-flowered – usually between 200mm (8in) and 250mm (10in) in

diameterC Medium-flowered – usually between 150mm (6in) and 200mm (8in)

in diameterD Small-flowered – usually between 100mm (4in) and 150mm (6in) in

diameterE Miniature-flowered – not usually exceeding 100mm (4in) in diameter

Ball dahlias (group 6)A Small Ball dahlias – usually between 100mm (4in) and 150mm (6in)

in diameterB Miniature Ball dahlias – usually between 50mm (2in) and 100mm

(4in) in diameter

Pompon dahlias (group 7)Pompon dahlias – not exceeding 50mm (2in) in diameter

_____

Note: The use of “Dw.B” after the classification of a cultivar indicatesthat these are dwarf bedding dahlias, not usually exceeding 600mm(24in) in height.
