Molecular Systems BioMedicine

and Complex Pathological

Phenotypes

Catania, Italy, October 4-8, 2011

La Nascita di Venere. Sandro Botticelli, Tempera su Tela. Firenze, Galleria degli Uffizi

Nudo di donna. P.A. Renoir, Collezione privata.

Beauty is subjective, health less so. According to the World Health

Organization, health is a state of complete physical and psychic well

being. Clearly, this is an ideal and not easily reachable state for many

humans. Pathologic phenotypes as Colorectal Cancer, Diabetes Mellitus,

Alzheimer’s Disease, Infertility are among the major chapters of

contemporary western Medicine: they represent a heavy burden and a

critical challenge for Public Health Systems. Other diseases, such as

Tourette Syndrome, are still poorly characterized at the biomolecular

level. Understanding the molecular bases of these and other medically

important phenotypes also at the level of cell pathways and networks is

of critical relevance for a rational approach to successful therapy and

prevention. The 2011 Course (the sixth) of the International School of

Advanced Molecular and Systems BioMedicine will focus on these

themes and new promising discoveries (as exchange of microvesicles

and exosomes with their molecular cargo, as microRNAs and LncRNAs,

among similar or different cells), and try to contribute to the evolution

of concepts, experimental strategies, therapeutic approaches, including

those made possible by Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine.
