T. Nagar residents move courton fire safety

By Our Staff ReporterThe fire that broke out in 2008 in a commercial complex in

T. Nagar and raged for more than nine hours has not beenforgotten, at least not by residents of the locality.

The commercial hub’s fire safety record has been grim andT. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association has now sought legalrecourse.

The Madras High Court issued a notice to civic agencies anddepartments concerned on a public interest litigation filed bythe residents, who sought directions to take action againstowners of buildings on Usman Road and Ranganathan Streetthat lack fire safety measures.

The association had first filed an RTI on the issue andobtained a status report on fire safety measures in more than100 shops and buildings on the two roads.

The RTI enlisted the violations released by fire and rescueservices department, Corporation and CMDA over the pastthree years and said the agencies had not taken steps to ensurethat corrective measures were taken.V.S. Jayaraman (Presi-dent of the Association) said that a number of buildings did nothave adequate fire safety mechanisms. “While the fire andrescue services department said it does not have powers totake action against the violators, the Corporation and CMDA,which can take the complex owners to task, did not respond toour letters. That forced us to file the PIL in court,” he said. “Ourconcern is the safety of the employees, shoppers and the publicin general,” he added.

Another problem is encroachments. Despite the Corpora-tion setting up a complex for hawkers in Pondy Bazaar, mostof them have returned to the streets, blocking off pavementsand road margins. In case of a fire, no fire tender can rush intothe area. There is no way for public to escape because of theencroachments which could then lead to stampedes. TheCorporation should remove the hawkers on a war footing andensure strict measures are in place to deter future encroach-ments. Members of the association said that the fire and rescueservices department has been asked to submit an audit of thefire safety violations in these commercial buildings withinthree months but a senior official of the department said thatthey have received no such notice yet.

tor, breathing abilities, co-or-dination, balance and manymore. We see marvellous im-provement in their cognitiveskills like sequencing, memory, understanding commands, patience etc. Children withautism find it really difficult toget over their sensory issuesand be part of a crowd. Withtraining in sports they alsolearn to come into a group, waitfor their turn, be in a new placeand meet new people. This wasa beautiful journey of self-de-velopment and developmentfor these children”.

This first ever sports dayorganized for special childrenby Arvind Foundation was de-clared open by ADGP Dr.Prateep Philip. Children fromvarious centers competed.More than 100 children par-ticipated in 16 events in 5 cat-egories each. “For ArvindFoundation, this was a day fullof energy and zest. Against allodds, physically and mentallychallenged children came to-gether from various parts ofthe city to explore and exhibittheir abilities. Participationitself was a winning matter forthese children. Winning goldand silver medals was only anadded bonus,” added LakshmiSunil (Group Principal of theinstitution).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SMS system introduced by PDS non-functionalSir, This has reference to the letter written by a reader and published

in Mambalam Times last week about the malpractice in ration shops.I fully endorse his views and would like to add my bit to it. If the PDSdepartment sends stocks according to the number of cards attachedto a particular shop, the consumer should get his/her quota wheneverhe/she visits the shop within that period. It is the responsibility of theofficial concerned to clarify the matter if the card holder is denied his/her quota with the excuse that the stock has got exhausted. Somemonths back the PDS department made an announcement that acardholder can know the stock position in the ration shop to which hiscard is attached by sending an SMS in a prescribed format to thepublished mobile phone number. However when I tried it a couple ofdays ago it did not work and I never got back any automated reply.Looks like it was just a publicity stunt and the system was neverimplemented or given up after a short while. – S. Muralidaran, 1/C1,EWS Flats, 45th Street, 8th Sector, K.K. Nagar

Street abutting Natesan Park misused as toiletSir, Natesan Park (T. Nagar) is one of the best maintained public

parks in the city. It has lots of greenery, a well laid out walkers’ path, benches for visitors to relax and well maintained play equipment forkids to enjoy. However, in spite of the fact that there is a well maintainedpublic toilet in the park, the stretch of Kannadasan Road abutting thepark is being misused as a public toilet. Park visitors, especially womenare put to embarrassment by menfolk who urinate, oblivious to theirpresence. No action is being taken by the authorities in spite ofrepeated complaints registered with them. – Sudha, MylaiRanganathan Street, T. Nagar

Aadhaar Card registration woesSir, I wish to outline herein the woes in registering for Aadhaar Card

as the applicants are made to run from pillar to post to fulfill therequired formalities like getting slips verified, registering the biometricdata and getting the acknowledgement slip as there is no single windowmechanism. The database is ridden with errors and in a number ofcases names of persons with census slips are missing. Even thoughAadhaar card has not been made compulsory for registering for theLPG scheme, there is still a huge rush of residents at the Aadhaarcounters in the zonal office. The staff is not able to manage the crowdand there is utter chaos everyday. I appeal to the concerned authoritiesto streamline the process through a single window mechanism and alsoopen additional centers to manage the crowd. – R. Sadasivam,Subramanian Street, West Mambalam

Inadequate response by Corporation after report inMambalam Times

Sir, After my letter about the bad condition of Chakrapani Street waspublished in Mambalam Times, Chennai Corporation officials comeover to inspect the condition and promised to take immediateaction. However instead of re-laying the road, they just covered thesurface with rubbish and loose gravel. No tar or road roller was used toproperly lay the road. The road is now back to its old state as the rubbishand the loose stones have either been washed away by the rains or gotunevenly scattered. Motorists, especially 2-wheelers, are at a risk ofskidding on the roads. It is also causing heavy dust pollution. With therepair work on Kodambakkam flyover, this is the only short route formotorists going towards Kodambakkam. I appeal to the Corporationofficials to take immediate steps to re-lay the road properly. –Varadarajan, Subramani, Chakrapani Street, West Mambalam

Hazard outside ration shop on Rameswaram StreetSir, The ration shop

on RameswaramStreet (T. Nagar), ispoorly maintained.Debris, garbage andmetal scrap, some ofwhich have sharpedges, are perma-nently dumped outsidethe shop. Road usersand consumers whoqueue outside the shopare put to hardship. The shop owner re-fuses to clear the gar-bage. I hope the Cor-poration officials takeaction against theshop owner. – AkilaS r i d h a r ,Rameswaram Road,T. Nagar
