STARFLEET: What is it?• World’s oldest and largest continuously-operating
Star Trek fan organization
• Founded in 1974
• Over 4,500 members in 243 chapters globally
– Chapters in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Iceland,
Malta, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa and
the United Kingdom
• Non-profit corporation
Organizational structure
• Corporate structure is governed by a President,
Board of Directors and Executive Committee
• Membership structure is based on the military
organization in the Star Trek TV shows and
movies
• Chapters are organized by geographical region
and designated as Outposts, Starbases and
Starships
Special Programs
• STARFLEET Academy (over 3,000 correspondence courses
in subjects both inside of Star Trek and beyond)
• STARFLEET Marine Corps (for those who want a more
structured military-like flavour to their Star Trek fandom)
• Department of Technical Information (resources for
members interested in the technical aspects of Star Trek)
• Holodeck Programs (special support services and
information in topics ranging from medical and health
issues to science, charity services, spiritual outreach)
Service to the Community• Raised over $100,000 (estimated) for various charities in
2011
• Members also make donations of food, toys, books,
personal necessities, as well as volunteering time and effort
in local community projects:– Aluminum Drive in Utah turns cans into toys for children
– Southern California chapter send care packages to troops in Mid East
– Members in Virginia took part in the Clean Virginia Waterways International
Coastal Cleanup event
– Members in Denver, Colorado who are trained in emergency response serve as
auxiliary EMTs
– Chapter in Maryland participates in American Cancer Society “Relay for Life”
– Ohio chapter enters float in parade to support area food bank
– Chapter in Atlanta, Georgia donates time for Public Broadcasting pledge drive
– Virginia chapter organizes educational Space Camp for kids
