THE IVY CONNECT FEBRUARY 2015
2
Sorors, The month of January has been extremely busy for all of us. We have gathered to watch a historical movie, celebrated our sisters and founders, entertained our guests who support us annually, worshipped together, trained our young people and praised them as they showcased their talent, fed the homeless, danced while collecting food and supported the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I even got to rub elbows with the VPOTUS and attend a meeting in the White House. January 2015 is very memorable for me! “Service to all mankind” means you. Together, we can get the job done and make Alpha Kappa Alpha resonate all over the city of Portsmouth. I want the community of Portsmouth, Va and the surrounding areas to always ask “what are those AKAs doing now?” I believe we are well on our way. It is my goal that in 2016, when the regional conference is in Virginia Beach, VA, that we will sweep the awards while we are home. Who’s with me? I need you to help the chapter reach that goal. That means I need you to show up and show out or in the vernacular of our young people “turn up!” How do we turn up? By assisting in the development of award-‐winning activities, by supporting the execution of those activities, by spreading the word and DOCUMENTING our success. Gamma Delta Omega has been executing exemplary programs for years but we neglect to evaluate those programs with the chapter and with those we serve. We are getting better but we still have opportunity for improvement. I am very confident that WE can do it! As we move into February we have an International Impact Day to implement as “PINK goes RED” for the day. Join us on Friday and Saturday as we wear RED to support the American Heart Association. Be prepared to assist with ASCEND and join us in worship with the debutantes and escorts at my church, St. Mark Missionary Baptist. How many met my challenge to attend 4 activities in the month of January? Are you willing to accept the challenge for the month of February? Sorors, together, we can be the change we want to see! Let’s do it!! In Service, Soror Aurelia T. Williams, PhD Basileus

Sisters nurture one another by standing guard and lending a hand where needed.
The Sisterly Relations Committee worked diligently during the January chapter meeting.
Jan 15: Our International Sisterly Relations Day was held on January 15 in honor of our founders. This was a day for sorors to strengthen the bonds of sisterhood. Let us continue to "nurture our ivy" and strengthen the bonds by constantly showing care and concern for our sorors. In February we recognize Heart Health Month. Have a Pink Hearts Celebration and do something special that will warm the heart of a Soror. Send a candy gram, have a gift exchange, honor a Soror by sharing a story on Instagram or Twitter, or simply call a Soror you haven't seen or talked to in a while. No matter how small the act of kindness, it's demonstrating that you genuinely care that warms the heart!

Family Strengthening Building Better and Stronger Communities
Submitted by Soror Jacqueline Dowdy

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated members believe stronger families work together to create stronger communities. Moreover, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will continue its long-‐standing commitment to strengthening the family unit by implementing programs that address the three key areas of importance: Childhood Hunger, Family Seasonal Wraps and Financial Fitness. Gamma Delta Omega’s Family Strengthening Committee has accepted the challenge of working together to create stronger communities in Portsmouth, Virginia. Soror Joyce Harris along with ten other sorors and a guest led our first MLK Day Community Impact activity on Friday, January 16, 2015 by providing their services at Third Baptist Church’s Feed the Hungry Program. Their services made a significant impact to our local community because they volunteered their time, talent, and energy to serve approximately 100 neighbors in need hot meals. In pursuing MLK Day Community Impact activity further, Gamma Delta Omega sorors and guests participated in “Donate & Dance” featuring Reggie as the line dance instructor. The sorors danced and donated 201 non-‐perishable food items to replenish Portsmouth Department of Social Services’ food pantry. Soror Hortense Cross and her niece Taylor Whitehurst, Future AKA tracked the following donated food items: Canned Meats/Protein Total 21 Canned Vegetables Total 33 Canned Stews & Soups Total 23 Canned Fruits Total 3 Pasta & Sauces Total 121
***Grand Total 201 non-‐perishable food items***
Gamma Delta Omega Chapter extends their heartfelt thanks to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Portsmouth, Virginia for their commitment and support in delivering food items to our neighbors in need at Portsmouth Department of Social Services. Portsmouth Department of Social Services continues to open their doors to help those less fortunate. Your support and donations were very much appreciated. Additionally, the Family Seasonal Wraps including hats, socks, gloves, scarves, jackets with hoodies, jogging pants and other seasonal donations have increased from 39 items to 92 items giving us a grand total of 131 items. Soror Bernadette Fraser and Soror Janice Davis have been tracking the family seasonal wraps for the chapter. These items will be donated on Saturday, January 31, 2015 to the City of Portsmouth activity, Echoes of Joy from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Neighborhood Facility Recreation Center, 900 Elm Avenue. Echoes of Joy activity is a day for caring for the homeless and disadvantaged. Thirteen sorors and two guests have volunteered their services to distribute the seasonal wraps and serve hot meals to our neighbors in need. Our purpose is to inspire individuals to keep striving during these times of uncertainty, and show them that people care. If any other sorors are available to support the City of Portsmouth endeavor, contact Soror Valora Baskerville. The attire is AKA paraphernalia. Recognizing, Childhood Hunger disproportionately affects African American children, Gamma Delta Omega will address childhood hunger in our communities. Twenty-‐five students at Douglas Park Elementary School have been identified for the Weekend Backpacks Program. On Friday, January 9, 2015 and January 23, 2015, these students took home healthy food items from these categories: Canned Meats/Protein (1), Canned Stews & Soups(1), Canned Vegetables(1), Canned Fruits(4), Healthy Snacks(4), and Grains, Boxed Pasta and Sauces (3). Gamma Delta Omega Goes Red for Heart Health Awareness Submitted by Soror Tanya Weaver
Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, every year 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The number is more prevalent in the African American community. The good news is Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recognizes its impact within the communities that host the many chapters worldwide. Even more, Gamma Delta Omega Chapter is doing our part to create awareness for Heart Health. GDO’s “Pink Goes Red” will be in full force during the month of February with the following activities scheduled:
§ February 6th-‐ Kick off “Pink Goes Red” with cardiovascular activity by line dancing with Reggie at Fourth Baptist Church, located at 726 South Street in the City of Portsmouth. Line dancing will begin at 6:30pm. All sorors are asked to wear their pretty AKA t-‐shirts.
§ February 7th-‐ Chapter Meeting. Sorors are encouraged to wear red shirts/blouses in support of “Pink Goes Red”. A donation of $5 will be collected to go to the American Heart Association.
§ February 7th-‐ Immediately following chapter meeting. Sorors are encouraged to have a “heart healthy” lunch together at Ruby Tuesdays located on Victory Blvd (Victory Crossing). This activity will be in partnership with Sisterly Relations and Twenty Pearls.
Gamma Delta Omega’s Health Committee encourages everyone to create a more heart happy life by working with your health care team, monitoring your blood pressure, getting your cholesterol checked, eat a healthy diet, maintain healthy weight, exercise regularly, don’t smoke, limit alcohol use, and take your medicine as prescribed. Heart health is everyone’s fight and Gamma Delta Omega is doing its part to bring awareness.

How to Fight the Enemies of Good Intentions
The reason why most people are ineffective in life is that they’ve never learned how to fight the battle of the mind. If you want to learn to manage your mind, you have to deliver it from destructive thoughts. That isn’t easy, because there are three enemies that keep you from fulfilling all your good intentions of changing your life.
1. The first enemy is your old nature. Do you ever find yourself doing things that you don’t really want to do? That’s the battle in your brain between your old, sinful nature and your good intentions.
2. The second enemy is Satan. Satan cannot force you to do anything, but he can make suggestions, and those suggestions are very, very powerful. He is constantly planting negative thoughts in your mind.
3. The third enemy is the world’s value system. Does anything in our society encourage self-‐discipline? Not at all.
With enemies like that, no wonder we struggle with discouragement and despair and failure!
So how do you fight this battle? Realize, You have a choice! Your mind has to listen to you. God didn’t give you just a mind; he gave you a will! The best time to win the battle with temptation is before it begins.
