President’s Message

It is a privilege to serve as the President of the Junior League of Billings and to be a part of JLB’s storied history of service to the Billings community. Founded in 1954 as a service league, now known as The Junior League of Billings, Inc., we joined the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) in 1970. The current Board is actively focusing on ways to celebrate and educate those near and far about the impact JLB has had in the Billings community, with a culmination of celebration of our 50

th Anniversary

of joining AJLI, to be celebrated in the year of 2020. While 2020 will mark the 50

th anniversary of JLB’s association with AJLI, 2024 will

mark the 70th year of service in Billings. We have a lot to celebrate!

Spring, associated with fresh beginnings, is an opportune time for this Board to invest in strategic planning. We have already begun this discussion at our first Board Meeting in January of 2018. Our continued values, continuity in meeting our mission in everything we do, will be a continuing conversation as we transition to the 2018-2019 year, with Jennifer Kautz at the helm. Happy New Year! I hope your 2018 is off to a great start; I know I am excited about what the new year will bring.

Community council started 2018 with our laundry day project. We tried out the first Sunday of the month and did 54 wash loads and 1,282 dry minutes. We have set up an ad-hoc subcommittee that is working on how to get the laundry project to be viable on its own, with the deadline of the end of April. If you are interested in serving on this committee, contact Dana Paulson - [email protected]. Moving forward we have 2 dates set for laundry Saturday February 3 9am-1pm and Sunday March 4th from 9am-1pm both at BYO laundry.

Coming up we will be setting days/times to serve meals at the MRM which is going to be lead by Kelsey Bryson and at the Ronald McDon-ald house which will be lead by Whitney Williams. In addition, we will be doing a “kids in the kitchen” even at Wild Words in February tying into literacy with recipes. Stay tuned for more information as details emerge on all three!

As always, if you have ideas on projects that you want to see JLB be a part of, please reach out to a member of the Community Council.

Cheers to 2018! Dana Henry

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

January General Meeting

PARLIAMENTARIAN This month’s article is focused on voting procedures of the League. After listening to the panel of Sustainers during the January General Membership Meeting I decided that instead of quoting the League By-Laws I would share some of their quotes regarding their League journey. This too, could be the experience that you have while in the League if you choose to self-nominate and proceed through the voting procedure.

“Whatever you choose to put into the League you will get at least 100% back.”

“Being involved helps you learn because the League is a safe place to learn.”

“You get to meet woman with a variety of experiences (personal and professional)”

“Don’t be scared, have fun!”

“Be willing to try it!” “Just do it!”

“Being in the League allows you to spend time with an amazing group of ladies where you will develop relationships and learn new skills.

“Civility, team building, training, conflict resolution, community connection, networking, learn that you are capable, give the best you have and know that it’s enough, ability to see your impact, see growth within the League and yourself, and access to top tear Leaders and Training”.

If you have questions regarding the nominating process or voting procedures please don’t hesitate to contact anyone on the Board of Directors, read the League By-Laws, or join us at the next General Membership Meeting where members will continue to receive information on this entire process. Respectfully, Dana Paulson Parliamentarian and President Elect-Elect

AJLI Webinar Wednesday

February 7, 2018:

RUNNING STELLAR COMMUNITY PROGRAMS: A CON-VERSATION WITH YOUNG NONPROFIT LEADERS

Featuring: Akilah B. King, Senior Manager, Development & Program Operations and Bethany Brichta, Senior Manager, External Relations, Room to Grow

Akilah King and Bethany Brichta are emerging leaders in Room to Grow, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of babies born into poverty over the critical first three years of their development. With locations in NYC and Boston, the organization's research-informed program focuses on eradicat-ing the associated developmental and achievement gaps of growing up in poverty, ultimately breaking the cycle of intergen-erational poverty.

In this webinar, our speakers will talk about their organization's approach to service, its program model, and how it rigorously

evaluates the program’s impact. As young professionals, they have a unique perspective on taking on the responsibilities of leadership within their organiza-tion, and they will discuss their journeys as new leaders. Lastly, they will pro-vide insight for League members volunteering in community programs about effective involvement with organizations and the people they serve.

You will walk away with a good sense of:

Effective program delivery and well-designed impact evaluation

The career journeys of young professionals leading nonprofit programs

How to help your League achieve meaningful and lasting impact in its com-

munity

Join us for this exciting presentation by young and coming leaders!

FUND DEVELOPMENT

Hope everyone is having a great winter! Our council is starting to prepare for MPM in November 2018. We will have bingo raffle basket sign up at the Febru-ary General Meeting. We are asking items be dropped off by May. We hope to get a head start in preparing the baskets this year. We also hope to solicit busi-nesses before their charitable funds are allocated for the year. As a council, we have also discussed the importance of building relationships with sponsors. Our goal is to partner with individuals and businesses that would like to support our mission. We will be providing the League with education about fundraising, and building and maintaining these relationships. We are hoping to provide education at GMM in March. More information to come.
