Unions mean better pay, benefits and working
conditions for their members.
They force employers to treat employees with dignity and re-
spect.; and at their best, they provide a way for workers to
make society both more democratic and equal.
Why Unions matter you ask?

Perks of being a full
member vs Agency
The Janus Supreme Court decision, just like the so-called “Right-to-Work” laws, isn’t about freedom to choose, it is a deception with words. It’s about taking away worker’s freedom to have a say and
some power to improve our lives. Anti-Union forces, from the right-wing think-tanks like the Freedom Foundation to big businesses, lobbyists to others, see Unions as the single greatest obstacle to un-bridled profit and control. In the wake of the decision these anti-union people will be talking to members of our Unions about dropping their membership. They spend boat-loads of money trying to convince Union members that we could save our dues or agency fee money and lose none of our rights. However, they will fail to inform you of their own political agenda; privatizing education, end healthcare, roll back
worker and environmental protections, and cut taxes for the very wealthy people and corporations. It’s just the latest of unrelenting corporate assaults on Union power and financial resources. Part of what the right-wing is exploiting in this case is that of Public Sector workers, their employer is, in some sense, “the government”. That makes their Union contracts more vulnerable to challenges from outsiders. The U.S. Supreme Court ruling is a threat to workers and communities: The case argues whether Unions can collect dues from all the workers who enjoy Union benefits like fair salaries and safe working conditions – or whether some workers can get a free ride. Without dues, Unions would be less able to protect workers, which includes teachers, police officers, firefighters, custodians, bus drivers, cafete-ria workers, college professors and city clerks, all of whom serve the public. So, it’s about more than dues, it’s about people. People in Public Sector jobs. They are stripping Public Sector workers of their voice. It’s also about stripping them of their wages and opportunity to achieve the American Dream. It is an assault on public workers. You may have heard the phrase “a rising tide lifts all boats”. Well a Union wage lifts all wages. So even non-union members should care about Janus! For everyone’s benefit, the Union must remain strong, especially in the wake of Ja-nus. Our collective voice must continue to ring out!

SUMMER 2018
It is time for everyone to come together in “UNITY”
Politicians and Corporate America are busy stacking the cards against YOU the worker. Their strategy is to fragment the workers and divide
everyone in the work place. Unity is the only way for the working Un-
ion people to have the strength to fight against them and preserve the
privileges that the Union has fought so hard for you to receive!
Now that the Supreme Court has made a ruling on Public-Sector em-
ployees and it is the law of the land we must move forward. The law is
not clear as to your entitlements to receive the negotiable items as stat-ed in the contract if you are not a Member. Teamsters Local 331 wants
to make sure every Public-Sector employee is secure with all benefits as they received them before this
law took effect. There is more to this than NOT paying dues. You would not want any interruptions in
benefits without representation on the contractual obligation under the current contract. This still
leaves the Union with monetary responsibility to represent ALL employees. Unity is the only way to fight against this ruling, everyone in Public-Sector needs to join together in the fight to keep what is
already yours.
It is only a matter of time before this ruling has a trickle-down effect and infiltrates into the Private-
Sector creating further division in the work place until the Politicians and Corporations get what they
want, full control of their workers and everyone becomes exposed to being an “at-will” employee. We all
need to wake up, pay attention and unite. They already were successful in step one, step two is right
around the corner.
Remember, YOU are the Union!
TEAMWORK occurs when diverse abilities and insights join together in UNITY to work toward a
common goal….

Brian Lyons started his career at Warren Distributors South in 2006 as a helper, he then moved into night shift warehouse employee and worked his way up to a Driver position. Brian was an active supporter of the Union prior to becoming a Shop Steward for Warren in 2015. In 2017 Kramer Beverage purchased Warren Distributors, he transitioned over to Kramer Beverage soon thereafter and became a Shop Steward there. He represents his co-workers with dedication and fair-
ness.
His new important role is “Father” since he and his wife Jackie wel-
comed a son Nolan into the family in June. CONGRATULATIONS!
