“Whether it is in Jasper,Lufkin, Beaumont, we feelthat on the healthcare side of
things we are well positionedand we are getting better,”Ashby said. “Our hospitalssee the trends. Our hospitalsin this region understand howimportant this is and are pre-pared to meet the challenge.”
Mark Durand, marketing

“We are just as important tothem as they are to us,”
Durand said. As part of that growth,

With a recent renova-tion project, ChristusJasper MemorialHospital will soon bestepping up its emer-gency room services.
Jasper HospitalDistrict (JHD) brokeground on Jan. 9 for thenew C. Bryce Thomas,M.D. MemorialEmergency Center atCHRISTUS JasperMemorial Hospital.Expected completion ofthe project is January2013.
“If we have goodweather, then I expect byNovember or Decemberto have that ER open,”said JHD Chairman ofthe Board CharlieNicholson.
The project is theresult of a study com-missioned by theHospital District Boardto determine the needfor and size of a newemergency center.
The study concludedthat a new state of theart Emergency Centerwith 16 treatment rooms(six Urgent Care and 10Emergent Care) wouldprovide for the immedi-ate and future needs ofthe citizens within theJHD jurisdiction.
“It is a great honor tobe able to announce thisproject. We have
worked hard with theChristus Southeast Texasand others in the com-munity to make surethat we were buildingthe right project to servethe healthcare needs ofour citizens,” Nicholsonsaid. “This new state ofthe art facility will pro-vide a beautiful, efficientand properly sized facil-ity for our fine doctors, nurses and staff to pro-vide high quality care in
a timely and compas-sionate manner.”
He further stated, “Itis very fitting that wehonor C. Bryce Thomas,MD for his contributionsand tireless dedicationto the health of the citi-zens of Jasper County bydedicating this facility tothe citizens of JasperCounty in his name.”
“This new depart-ment should providebetter patient flow, bet-
ter service to ourpatients,” said MarkDurand of JasperChristus MemorialHospital.
The cost for theexpansion is a little over$6 million and will beshared by the hospitaldistrict and ChristusHealth.
The project will becompleted in three phas-es.
The new Emergency
Department addition isapproximately 12,000sq-ft and includes alobby/family waitingarea; triage, urgent careand emergent care units.The emergent care unitincludes a dedicated X-Ray room and threeT r a u m a / C a r d i a cRooms.
The plan has beendeveloped to maximizevisibility and controlfrom the principal nurs-es station includingvisual control over walk-in patients and ambu-lance patients. In addi-tion the Urgent CareUnit can be closed for
the night without affect-ing the operations of theEmergent Care Unit. This should result inincreased staff utiliza-tion and efficiency.
Phase Two and Threeof the project will be therenovation of currentEmergency Department(ED) into additionalspace for the MedicalImaging Departmentand the Laboratory. TheCT machine will be relo-cated in the emergencydepartment and a newMRI housed inside thehospital replacing the

Nursing pathwayAC program helps provides
nurses for tomorrowBy JODIE WARNERStaff Writer
Angelina College-Jasper Teaching Centeroffers a full programwith a rewarding careerafter graduation. TheLVN (LicensedVocational Nurse)Program graduates stu-dents every year fromour area and gives themnot only a pathway to arewarding career, butalso a quality educationcarries on with them.
Honore Haltom-Bailey, R.N. is the headof the nursing programat the Jasper TeachingCenter, she has been sofor going on four yearsbut she has also workedwith Angelina forapproximately eightyears in full-time andpart-time positions andhas been a nurse for 26years.
She said that theJasper Teaching Centeroffers students greatresources such as onlinetesting, learning, and alibrary stocked withcomputers for studentsto use.
Bailey said, “My pro-gram is a one year pro-gram, it required at thistime, or currently, noprerequisites. The onlyrequirement is that theyhave a high schooldiploma or a GED.”
She also suggests
though, “in my opinionthe more classes that youtake beforehand, [themore prepared youare.]”
She said that accept-ance into the program isbased on the HESI A-2score, “for people inter-ested, they can order astudy guide online orthey can go through theAngelina CollegeBookstore.”
She said that if shewere trying to get intothe program she would,“start by coming to aninformation session andat that information ses-sion they will detaileverything they need todo. Students are given achoice of what campusthey want to attend, theyare given a first, secondand third choice.”
She also said that stu-dents can attend anyinformation session, notjust one based with thelocation the studentprefers to attend.
“An information ses-sion is mandatory, theymust attend one, or theycannot be in the nextyear’s class,” Baileyexplained.
She also explained,“The Board of Nursing(BON) governs all nurs-ing programs and theyare not necessarily thereto protect nurses, butpatients…they [stu-dents] do have to pass
certain backgroundchecks [comparable] tothe FBI.”
Bailey says that thenshe would, “go to themain campus and payfor the HESI A-2 test andright now we are takingthe top scores so you cansee that if someone tookanatomy and physiolo-gy one and two, medicalterminology, and/or adosage calculations classwithin the college sys-tem that could helpthem on that, the moreyou take before the bet-ter.”
She also says, “Forsome this is a steppingstone and for some thisis where you’re meant tobe, bloom where you’replanted.” Bailey believesthat for some studentsthe LVN program is abeginning to othercareers, such as obtain-ing an R.N (RegisteredNurse) and for some it isa perfect fit.
Bailey teaches to tenstudents in her class-room every week day,but she also has approx-imately 60 other stu-dents on other campusesthat learn from her viaremote viewing withinteractive TV (itv.)
On the program shesays, “So, basically ineleven and a halfmonths a person can gofrom making minimumwage to making on aver-
age $17-$20 an hour, even sometimes more incertain situations...[aftersome transitional class-es] and in one more yearyou can become anR.N.”
Bailey believes thatthe LVN program, andespecially her programis very encompassing ofthe entire nursing field,“I think that the LVNlevel gives a really goodfoundation for nursing;it teaches them not onlyin theory, but also handson.”
“At Angelina ourmotto is ‘it’s a greatplace to start’ and Ibelieve that the LVNprogram is a great placeto start,” she said.
As far as what the stu-dents go through in theprogram, “they trulygive up a year of theirlives” to finish the pro-gram’s entirety. Studentsarrive at the JasperTeaching Center beforemost any other classesand leave after most arecomplete.
Bailey said that herprogram is fully accred-ited by the BON witha c c o m m o d a t i o n s ,“which means that weare at the highest level ofaccreditation with theBON that we can be.”
She also said, “thusfar in December I’ve

Bailey’s nursing stu-dents rotate through thelocal businesses, shesaid, “We rotate throughChristus JasperMemorial Hospital,Christus Jasper Clinic,Christus KirbyvilleClinic, Rayburn HealthClinic, Dr. Peter BidwellM.D.’s office, CompleteHealthcare, all NewtonFamily Clinics owned byDr. Larry Brown, ShadyAcres Nursing Home,New Century Dialysis,Jasper Newton PublicHealth District, WIC,JISD, and many sur-rounding school districtsfor school nurse rota-tions, Medicine Shoppein Jasper and Woodville,S&R Pharmacy, Dr. LynnPearson, and AdvantagePlus Homecare (BrendaFrazier is an AngelinaCollege Graduate andhuge supporter.)”
She also wants peopleto know that, “they arerotated locally and 95percent of my graduateswork locally right here inJasper and their workingand taking care of otherpeople, they’re not goingto Lufkin and otherplaces.”
She also says thatshe’s heard a rumor eversince her nursing schooldays that LVNs willeventually be phased outbut she assures everyonenot to believe the hype,“LVNs are the ones gen-erally with the patientsmore and are thought tothink beyond…AC(Angelina College)teaches their studentshow to think critically atevery level…LVNs aredefinitely employable Idon’t have any thataren’t working, primari-ly in hospitals, nursinghomes, and doctors’offices; although manyhospitals do not employLVNs in specialty areassuch as OB (Obstetrics)and emergency rooms,
there are some, however, that still do.”
Bailey also admits thatshe still teaches tradi-tionally, that she enjoysthe availability of com-puters and informationthrough the internet andother media, but she stilluses a lot of what sheconsiders “old school”methods in her teachingand still holds a tradi-tional graduation cere-mony commonly called a“pinning ceremony”where the new nurseswear traditional“whites” including oldfashioned nursinggowns and hats in theway of FlorenceNightingale.
In December of lastyear, Mack Hall (a fre-quent Newsboy contrib-utor) wrote an articleentitled “A Light shinesin Jasper” referring toBailey’s nursing pro-gram and an obvious ref-erence to Nightingalewho was the first ofnurses to check onpatients at night using ashining lamp, earningher the nickname of “thelady of the lamp.”
Hall’s article details,“over forty years ago anumber of Jasper vision-aries considered theneeds and possibilities ofhealth care in East Texas, and persuaded the peo-ple to vote the creation ofa hospital district.Among the first fruits ofthis dream were JasperMemorial Hospital and, shortly after, JMH’sstate-sanctioned LVNschool taught by myaunt, Rhoda Holmes, RNand definitely oldschool.”
He also said, “Upongraduation, Jasper LVNcandidates join for onelast lesson, and that les-son is in faith and ethicsin a traditional pinningand capping ceremonywhich originated withFlorence Nightingaleover 150 years ago.”
Hall concludes with,“the founders of Jasper’sgrowing medical com-munity are mostly gone
now, but they left a won-derful legacy. JasperMemorial Hospitalserves more people thanever, health careproviders find the area apositive place for estab-lishing their professionalpractices, AngelinaCollege continues theexcellence of the JasperLVN program, and theMary Dickerson will per-haps soon enjoy a renais-sance in providing med-ical service…The Ladywith the Lamp (who isjust as likely to be theGentleman) now carriesa high-tech pocket flash-light and a palm comput-er on her night rounds, and the white uniformhas been sacrificed tem-porarily for scrubs, butthe professionalism, theskill, and the care remainforever…Those squeakyshoes a wakeful patientmight hear walking thequiet hospital corridorsat 0-dark-thirty – thosearen’t really shoes, thoseare the wings of anangel.”

current mobile MRI.The Laboratory will becompletely renovated toprovide a state of the art, operationally efficientlaboratory facility.
The entire hospitalwill remain operationalthroughout the projectconstruction.
The new expansionwill face MarvinHancock but entrance tothe emergency roomarea from ambulanceswill change. With thenew addition, theentrance area will comeoff of U.S. Hwy. 190.
Durand said a wholenew facelift would beseen to the front of thehospital including anentrance to the hospital.
“When you enter thehospital now, you willsignage that will point
you to either the emer-gency room departmentor to in-patient and out-patient services,”Durand said.
“The nice thing iswhen the emergencyroom exit is beingchanged to come off ofHwy. 190 and the oldcovered walkways arebeing changed and peo-ple travel that highwaywill see this modernlooking facility in this lit-tle town and be proud ofit,” Nicholson said.“That is what we had inmind. As old as it is, theappearance needs to beupgraded.
“I think it will besomething that the peo-ple of not only here butall of East Texas can beproud of,” Nicholsonsaid.

“YOUR COMPLETE HEALTH, FITNESS &REHAB FACILITY”
By JIMMY GALVANEditor
When it comes toWoodville Health andRehab, the slogan for thefacility is simple — “liv-ing with dignity agingwith understanding, car-ing with pride.”
“It is a slogan that weare very proud of,” saidSammie Brown, directorof marketing/admissionsfor Woodville Health andRehab. “All of ouremployees have to gothrough an extensivetraining and the mainpoint taught to you is theclients.
“Our corporate officesare located in the Dallasarea and they make it apoint to make visits to allof the facilities and thathelps keep us on ourtoes,” Brown said.
Woodville Health andRehab, located at 102North Beech Street inWoodville, is a skillednursing facility withshort-term and long-termpatients. The facility alsosees a lot of patients whocome in rehab assign-ments where they getphysical and occupationaltherapy.
Woodville Health andRehab is a part of theCantex Continuing CareNetwork, which repre-sents a unified, seamlesspathway of compassion-ate care and medical
excellence, aimed at com-plete recovery beginningthe moment a patient isreleased from the hospital.
The 98-bed facilityoffers semi-private rooms,an activity program withcommunity outings, beauty and barber salonsand housekeeping andlaundry services. Clinicalservices offered includearound-the-clock skillednursing, pharmacy servic-es, speech therapy, woundmanagement, intra-venous therapy, hospiceand pallative care andrespite care.
“We make sure thatour residents are alwaysdoing something,” Brownsaid. “Our residents donot just sit around. We goon at least two outings amonth as well as we havechurches that come in andprovide services and Biblestudy.
“We even have some
residents that stay up lateand play dominoes,”Brown said. “They justdon’t come in and sitaround. They are a familywithin themselves.”
Cantex’ integrated net-work of healthcare servic-es includes transitionalcare, rehabilitation, chron-ic care, home health serv-ices, hospice and pharma-cy, all centered on thepatient.
According to Brown,Cantex is a family-ownedbusiness that started in
Canada. The history ofCantex Amelia Longoretired from the nursingprofession after the birthof her sixth child.
A few years after retir-ing, her husband passedaway. The Longo siblingsdecided to open up anursing facility for AmeliaLongo to serve as admin-istrator and run the facili-ty.
Several facilities wereopened in Canada beforethe company expandedits services to Texas.Eventually all the Canadasites were sold leavingonly the Texas sites.
The Woodville Healthand Rehab facility is partof the East Texas umbrellawhich includes TheBradford at Brookside,Magnolia Manor,Oakwood Manor, SilsbeeConvalescent Center andStoneleigh Estates.
Brown just started withthe company recently andsaid she a firm believer inwhat the facility has tooffer its patients and resi-
dents.“I have to really believe
in it to be a part of it,”Brown said. “I had achance to see how theemployees dealt with theresidents here before Iwas hired and I could tellthere was a genuine lovethere.
“It is really like a fami-ly and not like a nursinghome at all,” Brown said.“I don’t even like calling ita nursing home. It’s askilled nursing facility.Residents come here toget nursing around theclock. It is so much morethan what people think itis.”
One of the biggeststatements for WoodvilleHealth Rehab comes inthe form of referrals thatare issued from local doc-tors.
“We have actually hadlocal doctor refer theirown family members tous,” Brown said. “I thinkone of the reasons we getall the rehab referrals isbecause all of our rehabprofessionals have beenwith us for so long.
“We give them thatpersonal care that comesalong with a small com-munity,” Brown said. “It’snot just business, its per-sonal.”

On February 17, 2012,the Texas Board of LegalS p e c i a l i z a t i o nannounced that Scott W.Stover, of the Seale,Stover & Bisbey law firmin Jasper, received BoardCertification in FamilyLaw. “Family Law”includes: marriage,adoption, divorce, cus-tody, support plus own-ership of propertyacquired before and dur-ing marriage.
Board Certification isa voluntary designationprogram certifyingTexas attorneys in 21specific areas of law.Board Certified attor-neys must be licensedfor at least five years, devote a required per-centage of practice to aspecialty area for at leastthree years, attend con-tinuing education semi-nars, pass an evaluationby fellow lawyers andjudges and pass a 6-hourwritten examination.
“Board Certifiedattorneys have made acommitment to excel-lence to serve the justicesystem in Texas and tobenefit individuals andinstitutions in Texas,”said Robert Valdez,Chairman of the TBLSBoard of Directors.“They have dedicatedtheir time to meeting allthe requirements for ini-tial certification and theyhave made an ongoingcommitment to continueworking and acquiringknowledge in their spe-cialty area.”
There are currentlyonly 763 family lawboard certified attorneysin Texas. East Texasdoes not have manyfamily law specialists.Stover practices primari-ly in Jasper, Hardin,Newton, Sabine, SanAugustine and TylerCounties. There are noother family law special-ists with an office in anyof these counties. Mostare located in largercities such as Lufkinwhere there are 2 andBeaumont where there
are 5. When asked why he
applied for board certifi-cation Stover replied,“When I graduated lawschool I swore that Iwould never study foranother exam. Duringmy practice though, people continuouslycalled and asked if I wasa family law specialist. Iwould tell them that Ididn’t have the special-ization, but I had a lot ofexperience. After prac-ticing for a little over 20years I finally gave inand decided to take theexam. It was difficult. Iwas out of practicestudying and I wasworking at the sametime.” Stover added thatbeing a member of afirm helped him throughthis process, ensuringthat his caseload wasnever neglected, evenwhile he was in Austinpreparing for and takingthe exam. “Now that Ihave passed, I can defi-nitely say it was worthit,” said Stover. “I am
glad that I can offer thebenefit of a board certi-fied attorney to peoplein our area.”
The Seale, Stover &Bisbey firm has a historyof encouraging special-ization certification byits attorneys. Sid Stoveris a board certified per-sonal injury trial attor-ney and Blair Bisbey isboard certified in bothpersonal injury and civiltrial law, as well as beingdually licensed in Texasand Louisiana.
Although attorneys at
Seale Stover & Bisbeyhave board certifica-tions in specific areas, they continue to prac-tice in all areas of law.Stover has over 20 yearsof experience practicingbusiness law, commer-cial litigation, probatelaw, and personal injurylaw, in addition to hisfamily law specializa-tion.

facility in this littletown and be proud of it,”said Jasper HospitalDistrict Chairman CharlieNicholson. “That is whatwe had in mind. As old asit is, the appearance needsto be upgraded.
“I think it will be some-thing that the people ofnot only here but all ofEast Texas can be proudof,” Nicholson said.
The Jasper HospitalDistrict combined itsresources with ChristusJasper Memorial on the$6.2 million dollar project.
Tom McClurg, formerexecutive director for theJasper EconomicDevelopment Corporationand now working as abusiness consultant, saidhaving top-notch medicalfacilities is a key compo-nent in attracting retireesto the region.
“Medical growth is notonly viable but it is neces-sary for both industry andcommunities,” McClurgsaid. “Having a goodhealthcare system is anattractive for to all parties.
“Without the medicalfacilities, the communitywould be at a great disad-vantage,” McClurg said.
In Tyler County, theTyler County MemorialHospital continues to be aviable force in the area dueto it being the main hospi-tal for Tyler County.
The closing ofDickerson MemorialHospital only magnified
how hard it has becomefor rural hospitals to sur-vive in the present eco-nomic climate.
“It’s real tough rightnow in the medical field tobe a stand alone hospital,”Nicholson said.
In the recent history,Newton MemorialHospital, SilsbeeMemorial Hospital andDickerson MemorialHospital all closed itsdoors.
“It’s just hard to do,”Nicholson said. “We arereally successful herebecause Christus JasperMemorial is a county-wide hospital.”
In the Lufkin area,Woodland Heights hasused the demographics inthe area make for a naturalgrowth in the medicalfield in East Texas with itsability to stay on top of thelatest medical technology.
Jasper Hospital Districtboard member HaroldKennedy pointed out thatthe Christus JasperMemorial is utilized bypeople not only in JasperCounty but also from allpoints in this area.
