There was excitement in the air, if not disbelief, as the waters of Yam Suf returned to their natu-ral state and the Jewish people were finally free from Egyptian servitude. But the Midrash tells us something amazing about what hap-pened next. As the people looked back at the Yam Suf they had just traversed, washing up on the shores of the sea were gold and silver, the precious metals of Egyptian chariots and weap-ons ushered ashore to the feet of free men. And you can only imagine the thrill; impoverished slaves, showered with the riches Hashem had promised their forefathers for generations. So they ran and collected as much as they could store in their wagons, as much as they could car-ry on their backs. But as they hurried to collect their newfound treasure they become so con-sumed by it, so absorbed by the possibilities, they almost forgot they had a journey to com-plete. “And Moshe led Israel from Yam Suf…” explains the Midrash; not that Moshe led them from Yam Suf, but he dragged them away from their col-lecting. In that moment he was the only one not hypnotized by the wealth, the only one who re-membered they had somewhere more important to be. Fast forward just a short time later and these same people arrive at Har Sinai in advance of Shavuot to prepare for what would become the most remarkable, national revelation humanity had ever experienced. But as that event came to a close, when it was once again time to move on, the Torah doesn’t say Vayasa Moshe – Moshe led the people; rather, “…and they traveled.” Here, Moshe doesn’t pull them away from Sinai; they were already one foot out the door. The Midrash argues, that they ran, not towards Sinai,
but from it כתינוק היוצא מבית הספר like children bursting through the halls of school as the final bell of the day sounds. Too many mitzvot, too many restrictions, the people had already begun packing, emotionally and mentally, long before Matan Torah was complete. In the linkage of these two contrasting tales there is a powerful critique of the Jewish people. Consumed by the glimmer of riches, the people couldn’t be more focused on what lay before them at Yafm Suf. But when faced with some-thing truly priceless at the foot of Sinai, they didn’t possess the will and fortitude to focus. While it may seem so immature, even pathetic, this glaring inversion of priorities is something we know all too well. The blessing of a three day Yom Tov – despite the occasional grumpiness – is that with all of our time in shul, around the table or together with family in the park, we are gifted the time so often lacking in our lives. It is truly a special op-portunity to celebrate this season of Kabbalat HaTorah with the people we care about most. Cherish the present while it lasts; there will be plenty of time for the future in a couple of days.
