ably is forced to hand over all ofthe West Bank. How events thou-sands of kilometers away can con-tribute to the helplessness felt byAmerican Blacks defies all logic.But if BLM insists on singing “weshall overcome” with activistsaround the world, why not jointhose protesting the enslavementof the million Blacks inMauritania, Somalia, Eritrea andSudan? Why not link arms withthe dissidents being tortured inNorth Korea or the LGBT’s beingexecuted in Iran? Shouldn’t BLMbe building bridges with the muz-zled women throughout the Islamicworld? And is Syria such an oasisof tranquility that it merits not evena mention in BLM’s literature?

We acknowledge that theJewish-Black “alliance” has beenmore nuanced than some wouldacknowledge. Rabbi Joshua Heschelmay have marched with MartinLuther King, and half the freedomriders were Jewish. But so, too,was the racist Solomon Blatt,speaker of the South CarolinaHouse. Jews may have been morewilling to rent to Blacks inNorthern US cities. They were alsomore likely to be slum landlords,And Louis Farrakhan did, as herepeatedly told progressive Jews,hate “all white people”

We don’t know whether theBLM’s “genocide” accusation reflectsthe views of a few misguided zealotsor is representative of the move-ment’s general membership. Whatwe do know for certain is that thelegitimate aspirations of AmericanBlacks won’t be achieved by endingUS funding and military aid toIsrael. Nor will their grievances beaddressed through marches in soli-darity with Linda Sarsour or by link-ing its website to the rubbish beingspewed out by the BDS movement.

Black Lives Matter Has Lost Its Way

Hannah Jacobs is a sopho-more at Boston University. “Growingup”, she writes, “Judaism, Zionismand social justice complementedeach other to create someone wholoves Israel, is a strong Jew andcares deeply about the world aroundher”. Her great grandfather, havinglived through the obscenity ofracism, boarded a bus to join thefollowers of Martin Luther King Jr.marching on the streets ofWashington. Hannah, anxious tofeel as her Black friends feel, andsickened by the repeated shooting ofunarmed Black men, attended ademonstration in support of BlackLives Matter. But the vulgar, repug-nant anti-Semitic activists whostood by her side at the event, andthe subsequent release of the BLMIsrael bashing platform, has left her,and other Jewish liberals and pro-gressives facing a painful dilemma.How can they continue to be fullpartners with those whose plat-forms are a travesty of politicaljudgement and a disservice to theBlacks they purport to represent?

Black Lives Matter was creat-ed in 2012 following the shooting ofTrayvon Martin and the acquital ofGeorge Zimmerman. The Movementis “a call to action and a response tothe virulent anti-Black racism thatpermeates our society...It affirms thelives of Black queer and trans folks,disabled folks, Black-undocumentedfolks, folks with records, women andall Black lives along the gender spec-trum...It is a tactic to (re)build theBlack liberation movement.”

Somehow, however, BlackLives Matter has concluded, as havegroups such as MoveOn, Code Pinkand Occupy Wall Street, that fu l land equal opportunity for allAmericans can only be achieved ifIsrael stops its perpetuation of “geno-cide” and “apartheid” and presum-

received almost no feder-al funding and very little


In April 1944, abean farmer in Coloradosent a check for $100 tothe Washington, D.C.headquarters of the WarRefugee Board. Heexplained that the dona-tion was intended to helpthe Board stop theGermans “from extermi-nating the Jews” and to“feed, clothe, and sharewith them an earthlyhome.” In fact, thefarmer wrote, he wasready to share his ownhome–he offered to per-sonally take in fiveJewish refugee families.

One hundred dol-lars was not a small sumin those days. Adjustedfor inflation, it’s theequivalent of $1,359today. What would moti-vate a Baptist farmer inthe Rocky Mountains totake such a strong inter-est in the plight of Jewsin Nazi Europe? Theanswer to that questionreveals a great dealabout the complexitiessurrounding America’sresponse to theHolocaust.

Throughout the1930s, the height of theGreat Depression, pollsconsistently found anoverwhelming majority ofAmericans opposed toany increase in immigra-tion. There was a wide-spread fear of foreignerstaking away jobs fromAmericans.

During the earlyyears of World War II,opposition to immigra-tion remained high;many Americans fearedthat Nazi spies mightinfiltrate the UnitedStates, disguised asrefugees. When Jewishleaders appealed to the

White House to try tosave at least some Jewsfrom annihilation,Roosevelt administrationofficials insisted theirhands were tied becauseof the widespread anti-immigration sentiment.The president preferredto follow public opinionrather than lead it.

But not everyoneagreed with the WhiteHouse’s approach. Afterall, by the autumn of1943, many things hadchanged. The war hadput an end to unemploy-ment. Italy had beendefeated, and theGermans and Japanesewere in retreat. TheJewish activists knownas the Bergson Groupbegan arguing that theAmerican public wouldnow be more receptive toappeals to rescue Jewishrefugees.

In its public ral-lies, lobbying missions toCapitol Hill, and morethan two hundred full-page newspaper ads, theBergsonites contendedthat there was a sub-stantial reservoir ofuntapped public sympa-thy for helping Jewishrefugees. The activistsbegan pushing for aCongressional resolutionurging PresidentRoosevelt to establish arescue agency.

FDR opposed theresolution, and even sentAssistant Secretary ofState Breckinridge Longto testify against it beforea congressional commit-tee. But the growing con-troversy on Capitol Hill,combined with behind-the-scenes pressure fromthe Treasury Department,f inal ly forced Roosevelt

and Europe, will air onCanadian TV in the fall.The movie documents thesystematic eradication ofJews from the ThirdReich’s musical life. Asthe film begins, anarchival photo of Hitler12 days after his electionattending a Wagner con-cert in Leipzig serves as achilling reminder ofwhat’s to come. By 1935,Jews had been fired frommost state opera houses,orchestras and conserva-tories, and works byJewish composersbanned.

“The symbolicvalue of music meant thatthe value of removingJews from those publicroles was very high, butthe cost was very low,”says Doris Bergen,Professor of HolocaustStudies at the Universityof Toronto, in the docu-mentary. “Music wasquite easy to pry out: amusician here, a conduc-tor there, to change a pro-gram and to make a kindof public splash; look,we’re combating theenemy of German culture,without inconveniencing,dislocating, disruptingthe functioning of theeconomy and the societyas a whole.”

Harry Rogers, was part ofthe 70%, the large butsilent majority ofAmericans who wanted tohelp the Jews. After alocal newspaper men-tioned that Rogers hadoffered to take in fiveJewish families, the man-aging editor of theIntermountain Jewish

news, Robert S. Gamzey,decided to find out more.Gamzey’s article, “FarmerRogers, His Brother’sKeeper,” was distributedby the IndependentJewish Press Service.

When Gamzeyarrived at the 981-acreRogers property, hefound the farmer “rush-ing plans to build a newhouse for ‘my refugees’,and his neighbors arepreparing to follow suit.”One of the neighbors hasagreed “to take in tworefugee children,” andanother “said that he willtake in two families.”Rogers’ sister and broth-er-in-law had made simi-lar offers. Rogers himself,having just sent $100 tothe War Refugee B o a r d ,w a s n o w b u s y “raising$100 for the EmergencyCommit t ee to Save the

Jewish People of Europe(the Bergson Group),whose publicity ef fortshave strongly impressedhim.”

“What promptedthis obscure farmer to dowhat he is doing?,”Gamzey wondered aloud.“It is all very simple,”Rogers explained. “I wasraised by Christian par-ents and all my life I havetried to live close to myMaker…When we hearthis cry of the dying, itbecomes a part of ourduties, both Christianand American, to sharewith them our providen-tial blessings.”

Rogers toldGamzey that he is urginghis fellow-Christians toremember that “God,looking from the windowsof Heaven, is making arecord of individual con-duct,” including howpeople respond to “ourunfortunate brothers’welfare, regardless ofrace, color, class orblood.”

The farmer, who“specializes in growingsuperb beans and has140 head of cattle, 30hogs, and a large numberof chickens,” is situated“in one of the most inac-cessible sections of theColorado Rockies,” buthe “keeps up with worldevents by reading widelyand traveling.”

Sadly, the Rooseveltadministration rejectedthe War Refugee Board’spleas to grant temporaryhaven to a substantialnumber of Jewishrefugees, despite the factthat most Americanswould have supportedsuch a move. PresidentRoosevelt agreed to admitjust one group of 982refugees, who were then
