HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

How does one bring about change when change is needed? That question really was the essence of MLK’s vision. It still applies today

in so many ways at so many levels. At JF&CS, there are many opportunities to effect change, to make a difference and to do for others. What does it take to mobilize volunteers and inspire donors? Surely not a “worst case scenario” in a literal sense. It shouldn’t take a Hurricane Katrina, a South Asia tsunami or an earthquake in Haiti to get ordinary people to make an extraordinary impact. Any individual can make a real difference whether through volunteering time, sharing professional knowledge or making donations to a worthy nonprofit. With an organization like JF&CS, those who are willing to give their time, “treasure” or talent transform our agency and make a tangible impact on one or more of the 30,000 metro Atlantans we serve annually. We are able to provide a full range of dental procedures to more than 4,200 indigent patients annually through the efforts of more than 150 volunteer dentists. More than 700 other volunteers at the agency serve as PALs (big brothers and big sisters), plan events, staff committees, raise money and perform a multitude of other tasks that greatly enhance the agency’s reach in the community. Volunteers help older adults as well as people with developmental disabilities get where they need to go and live independently. Our nearly 3,500 donors contribute almost $2 million to the agency, funding a broad range of mission-critical programs. There are so many ways to make a mark we haven’t even mentioned. So what is required for an individual to participate in a meaningful way? No specific skill set or income level is needed to make a difference. There is no minimum time commitment or dollar threshold. All it takes is a desire to “pay it forward,” to open your heart and to share your personal resources. An accountant might share his financial acumen by serving on our Budget & Finance Committee. A creative marketing professional might lend perspectives to our

Marketing Committee. A loving young adult might provide guidance and companionship to a young child. A successful entrepreneur could choose to “share the wealth” with a bequest in a will that allocates 3 percent of an estate to JF&CS. For those who have not had the time, inclination or knowledge to get involved with a nonprofit, how do you get started? First, decide how much time you can spare – four hours a month, four hours a week, four hours a day or any other amount. Then identify your interests and skills. Do you love to work with children, older adults or peers? Do you have certain skills or interests you would be willing to share – business, art, marketing, social or organizational? Do you want to work alone or as part of a team? Whatever your preference, we have a place for you within JF&CS that will match your interests. You may volunteer as an individual, with a friend or with your family. By sharing your time, your talents or financial resources, you’re doing so much more than just helping other human beings. You’re helping yourself! You might be surprised to learn the tremendous benefits you will realize personally. Our volunteers increase their self-confidence, make new friends, improve their skills and alleviate stress. And they actually have fun while making a difference. Those who donate their personal resources experience great fulfillment when they can see the tangible impact of their contributions. So why not give it a try? If you can’t give your treasure, give your time. If you can’t give time, give your talent. Where you can, advocate for change. Help make this world — or at least this community — a better place.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?”—Martin Luther King, Jr.

Lynn Redd, President, and Gary Miller, CEO

HOW TO AGE AS A FAMILYAging isn’t only about older adults; it’s also about those who care for them. Aviv Older Adult Services - Tools for Aging offers an umbrella of services, including in-home care, designed to support both older adults and their families. Our licensed clinical social workers, geriatric care managers, certified information and referral specialists, master’s level clinicians, registered nurses and other professional staff members have years of experience in aging.

Understand that driving equals independence. Think seriously about how isolated you would be if you couldn’t drive anymore and how you would feel if your children didn’t want you to. Your parents might want to drive past the time it is safe for them and others on the road.

Prepare for the conversation. Listen and be ready to discuss alternatives.

Call Tools for Aging for guidance. We can recommend transportation options for elders without taking away their independence.

3

Understand your parents’ feelings and needs. While some older adults are not able to live on their own or may prefer to be in a larger facility with others, many want to stay in their own homes.

Call Legacy Home Care. We offer a wide variety of nonmedical services that support activities of daily living, enabling older adults to remain at home as long as possible.

2

Put yourself in your parents’ shoes and listen. It might be more convenient to have your parents nearby, but you should be educated about services available in your area before approaching the subject. Then you can explain the benefits of being closer to family and the availability of better services as they age.

Call Tools for Aging to help start your search.

Know what it is. An advanced directive clearly states your wishes if you are ever in a position where you cannot articulate your needs for medical treatment. It identifies those who may speak on your behalf.

Get a form for everyone* and take the time to read it carefully and sign.

Tools for Aging can direct you to where to obtain advanced directives and provide resources for legal advice.

*Don’t think advanced directives are needed only when you are older. These documents can and should be filled out by everyone over the age of 21.

Understand the signs yourself. Is your mother having trouble with her balance? Is your father having noticeable trouble hearing you or is he forgetting things? Spouses might be in denial or not see changes as clearly as an outsider does.

Get help to make a tough conversation much easier and more productive for everyone concerned. An objective aging professional from Tools for Aging can shift the dynamics, help pinpoint problems and find solutions.

Pay attention to your parents’ checking account. Have your parents been writing multiple checks to charities? This can add up to hundreds of dollars each month without the check writer realizing it.

If this becomes a problem, consider a neuropsychological assessment and supportive counseling services. Tools for Aging can help you find the answers and avoid a financial crisis.

Career Services - Tools for Employment by the Numbers

Don’t lose faith. Losing a job in today’s environment is more common than unusual. But that doesn’t make it any easier if you’re out of work — especially if you have been unemployed for six months or more.

There are many resources online these days to help you in your search. But if you would like face-to-face guidance, Tools for Employment can help. We will work with you to develop a personalized plan to address gaps on your resume.

If long-term unemployment is affecting your emotional well-being, ask about referrals to JF&CS’ Counseling Services – Tools for Life division for confidential counseling services.

Do you get the feeling things aren’t right at work? Are you not receiving any promotions or recognition for a job well done? Is your job no longer fun or fulfilling? Are you just not happy? It might be time to move on.

Understand the warning signs associated with potential job loss. A pending merger or acquisition, declining market share or decreased revenue and profitability all portend coming change.

Take charge of your career. Be proactive instead of reactive. Our career counselors can help you develop a plan so the decision to change careers is yours, not someone else’s. Don’t wait until you leave —or lose — your job before coming to us.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD THRIVEChild & Adolescent Services - Tools for Families provides assistance to children and their families so they can meet both everyday and unique challenges, navigate through transitions and thrive in their emotional, social and academic development. We aim to help children develop the resiliency skills critical in today’s ever-changing environment through counseling, education, advocacy and community involvement designed to nurture the psychosocial needs of children, adolescents and their families.

1

2

Life is full of transitions—a grandparent or pet dying, a new school, a big move. You need to be prepared to discuss these issues with your kids.

Call Tools for Families for support. Our therapists have a great deal of experience helping children and parents through transitions.

How to Help Your Child Through Transitions

Know the signs. If your son or daughter is eating very little or excessively dieting, overly exercising, rejecting clothing he or she had liked to wear previously, wearing oversized or baggy clothing or avoiding activities like swimming and sports because of the necessary attire, a poor body image could be the problem and an eating disorder could be to blame.

Get help. Tools for Families works with children to address the underlying reasons for their poor self image and help them learn to like themselves.

Pay attention to changes. Does your child continuously ask to stay home from school and/or avoid social activities previously enjoyed? Have grades or the quality of work declined? Does he or she have nightmares or trouble sleeping? These are just some signs of possible bullying. Others include frequent physical complaints (headaches, stomach-aches), missing belongings (jackets, electronics, jewelry, money) and a change in eating habits (coming home from school extremely hungry, as if he or she didn’t get to eat lunch).

Call Tools for Families. Our child psychologists are experienced in bullying issues and can help you and your child map out strategies and solutions.

Child & Adolescent Services - Tools for Families by the Numbers

Stay consistent. Every situation is different, but one thing is critical: both parents must deliver the same message.

Speak with a professional about the best age-appropriate way to have this conversation. Tools for Families offers divorce support services to help children and their families get through this difficult time.

Look for red flags. Does your child seem to be doing fine in school yet your gut instinct tells you learning is harder than it should be? Or does he or she seem much more capable than the work being produced? Difficulties in acquiring new learning can be typical, but they also can signal a learning disability or autism.

Get your child a psychoeducational evaluation by Tools for Families’ top-notch child psychologists to help determine if there might be an issue that needs further support.

If you suspect your child might have autism, ask about our Autism Spectrum Testing Services program.

HOW TO SURVIVE LIFE IN TODAY’S WORLDCounseling Services - Tools for Life provides guidance and support in the areas of mental health and life-cycle concerns. We offer individual, couples, family and group therapy as well as support groups for issues such as bereavement and divorce.

When you need more answers, we also offer a full range of psychological testing as well as psychiatric assessments and medication management as an adjunct to counseling.

You drink more than you intend to or think “one or two” is a waste of time.

You create reasons to go out or to stay out later, even when you have other obligations (like work).

You disregard those obligations so you can recover from drinking.

You find yourself alone at the bar when everyone else has gone home.

You get a DUI on the way home.

If you find yourself in these situations, call H.A.M.S.A. (Helping Atlantans Manage Substance Abuse) for help.

HOW TO HELP YOUR ADULT CHILD LIVE AN INDEPENDENT AND FULFILLING LIFEIf your child has a developmental disability, you want to understand his or her goals, abilities and the support needed to live independently. Is he or she ready to live in a group home or in an apartment? Developmental Disabilities Services - Tools for Independence will help you through the process, identify roommates and assign appropriate staff.

Tools for Independence offers nonsectarian programs and services designed to help individuals — primarily adults — with developmental disabilities enjoy as full and productive lives as possible. We also support our clients’ families and caregivers.

Ask about our Zimmerman-Horowitz Independent Living Program (Z-H ILP), a person-centered supportive living program with a staff that takes the time to get to know each individual we support in order to evaluate his or her needs and abilities. Clients receive training in money management, cooking, cleaning, household management, laundry, social skills and other areas. Transportation is included as part of this service. The Z-H ILP is a nonsectarian program.

Help your child integrate into the community. Our team of professionals can provide developmental supports, a social network, employment supports and a means of transportation.

Ask about pairing your child up with a volunteer through our PACT (Partnering Active Citizens Together) program.

The Judith N. Cohen Society (JNC Society) was created to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of individuals to Jewish Family & Career Services and to recognize their heartfelt commitment to community service. Membership in the JNC Society is granted to individuals, foundations and organizations who contribute, and have pledged to sustain, gifts of $10,000 ($1,000 if age 40 or under) or more to our annual campaign.

Established in 2004, the JNC Society is named in honor of Judith N. Cohen, an extraordinary community leader who is driven by a genuine concern for others and a passion for her community. We are honored to acknowledge those who have made a commitment to benefit JF&CS in the future through their will or estate plans. Membership in the JF&CS Legacy Society is granted to these forward-thinking individuals. Through a bequest in their will or by making JF&CS the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, qualified retirement plan or charitable trust, they have set aside a part of their estate to be distributed to our Foundation, which will support our mission for generations to come.

If you have already included JF&CS in your plans, we’d like to recognize you, too! Please let us know by contacting 770.677.9357 or [email protected].
