On the 25 th of September, 2016, we will have a HOMECOMING service, celebrating the proud history of what God has done through Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church over the last 147 years! Homecoming is a wonderful and historical Baptist tradition with roots primarily in the south. As part of our homecoming celebration we will have wonderful music and your former pastor, Rev. Kevin Meadows has graciously agreed to be our guest preacher. The history committee will prepare a short presentation, and we will have a brief update on our Vision 2017. In other words, we want to honor the past as well as anticipate an exciting future at JHBC! After the morning service we will have a potluck dinner ‘on the grounds’ in McDowell Hall followed by more wonderful music. The Southern Gospel group ‘The Taylors’ will lead us in worship, back in the sanctuary from around 1:30-2:30PM. That sounds like a full day already, so we won’t have any evening services. One of the greatest impacts homecoming can have is to encourage those that have been away from the church for a while to renew their fellowship. While we will be sending out invitations, would you help in this effort as well? Perhaps you have missed some of our brothers and sisters who haven’t attended lately. Would you please consider giving them a personal invitation to celebrate the Good News of what God continues to do at JHBC? Or, invite a neighbor who loves great music and excellent preaching. Together, let’s use this homecoming as a way to reach out to our community! 147 years! What a proud history of the faithfulness of our Father, and of all those who have come before! And what an exciting time as we anticipate what He will continue to do through us, His people! Won’t you please plan on attending this great day of celebration! Shine! Pastor Cal

‘In late summer of 1869, a revival was held at a school house a few miles south of

Jonesboro, in the Poplar Branch section of Moore County, North Carolina. A group who had attended the services requested the visiting evangelist, Elder Orin Churchill, to assist them in establishing a Baptist Church in the area.’ So began the history of JHBC! On the 25

th of September, 2016, we will have a HOMECOMING service,

celebrating the proud history of what God has done through Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church over the last 147 years!

Homecoming is a wonderful and historical Baptist tradition with roots primarily in the south. Each year those people who had migrated to the north to work in factories would return to participate in the annual homecoming service. We continue that rich heritage today!

The arrival of September ushers in my favorite season of the year… FALL!!! Growing up in the mountains of North Carolina, it was always a great feeling when the air started to turn cooler, the leaves began to change into bright and wonderful colors, and stadium lights lit up every Friday night for some football. For me, for some reason, everything begins to feel new again this time of year, and it seems that every September, new things are happening around here. College students, along with our elementary, middle and high school students, and our teachers are back in the swing of things for a new school year. Please keep them in your prayers, that God would grant wisdom and the power to learn and teach, along with the motivation to do so to the glory of God. We’re also at the beginning of a new church year as well. Some of you are moving to new Sunday School classes. We have new Deacons and ministry team members on board and beginning their responsibilities, while others are enjoying a much needed rest. It’s a wonderful thing when we realize that God gives every follower of Jesus at least one gift for ministry, and that He places in the body everyone that is needed to carry on His work through the body. It’s even more wonderful when we know what our spiritual gift or gifts as well as our natural abilities are, and put them to work in serving Christ through His church! I want to say thank you to all of you who have been serving and will serve this year and in the coming years. As you may have seen in other places in The Announcer, we are celebrating Homecoming later this month. Our church has had a rich history over the past 147 years, and we will take the opportunity not only to celebrate what God has done here at Jonesboro Heights, but also be challenged to live into what God is and plans to do through our church in the future. I hope you will attend that day. We also have quite a bit coming up with our youth ministry over the next few months and you’ll be hearing about some more things soon. So, as we begin this new church year, it is my prayer that you will jump in to all that is going on and continue to pray about your part as we continue to live out our mission in being the presence of Christ to Sanford and the World! Blessings,

ADULT VBS

THANKS! THANKS! THANKS!

WOW! We had a wonderful Adult Vacation Bible School. We had an average attendance of 50+ each evening. The study was very thought provoking on statements such as: “Everything Happens for a Reason” “God Helps Those Who Help Themselves” “God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle”’

“God Said It, I Believe It, That Settles It” “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin”

Adam Hamilton is one of my favorite authors and once again his study was one that would make you stop and think. I appreciate Wanda Howard and everyone who assisted her in providing dinner each even-ing. Our mission speakers were just absolutely wonderful. We collected over 60+ pounds of food items for the Backpack Pals. I’m sure CUOC would appreciate any and all donations any time during the school year for the Backpack Pals. Our Milk Money donations for the Children in the Son have collected $1,210.21 with more to come in during this year. Michelle and Daniel Sims spoke from the heart along with their adorable twins who par-ticipated in the recent trip back to Romania. However, there is now a need to sponsor 21 children. If you would be interested in sponsoring any of these children, please contact me for further information. The total sponsorship for the children is $8,000. It was good to skype with David and Heather and hear about their trip since arriving back in India. Jyoti already misses North Carolina. We had a very informative skype with Rod and Debi Bond, who are now settled in Utah and learning more about ways to serve God in that area. They are both very committed to building the Kingdom, even if it’s just one precious soul at a time. Kenny Lamm presented an outstanding and eye opening powerpoint including pictures and video of his Asia mission trip with a praise band leading in worship, as well as, teaching worship leading skills. The people in Asia are hungry for the gospel and to witness their worship services was refreshing and rejuvenat-ing as the worship leaders led them in worship musically, as well, as through scripture and the preached word. Kenny has a huge heart for the people in Asia and it shows in his testimony and the love of the people there. Again, the Lord works in a mighty and wonderful way! I am so very proud of Aaron Smith. He and his bride, Spresha, shared their personal stories with us. She shared how the Lord has used their family to win others to Him. To be a young married couple and liter-ally making sacrifices that the average young married could would not be doing is remarkable. They are so in love with their mission to serve that it gleans in their speech and their countenance. If you would be willing to help them financially, please contact me. They will soon be moving to another location where the cost of living will be higher. If you know of any church that would be willing to help sponsor this precious couple, please contact me. We are definitely so very well blessed to have many mission opportunities in our local and surrounding areas. I want to thank all of those that spoke and presented us with such valuable information about the mission opportunities that we are serving and other areas where we can be involved. The Lord was present in every aspect of our mission during this week of Adult Vacation Bible School. His presence was revealed in and through our mission emphasis, as well as, through our table talk discussions. In closing, I want to thank those that have been a part of this special week each year. This being my last one to organize and facilitate has been great. I appreciate all of you that attended and I will pray that this week will still continue in years to come. God Bless each of you and All your endeavors to serve our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

CITY ON A HILL NEWS

It seems too hot to think about Christmas just yet, but JHBC will begin collecting OCC Shoeboxes in just a few short weeks! National Collection Week is November 14-21, and we need your help! This year, we would like each family to pack a box (or boxes) so that you can share this beautiful mission opportunity with your family. We will also accept items to pack in the boxes, as well as monetary donations for shipping. Please plan to help make this the best OCC season our church has ever seen! School supplies

are super cheap right now, and they are perfect items for shoeboxes! If you have questions, please see Alice Gilchrist, Kathy Waters, or Kelley Desjarlais.

From The Powell River Association Shoe Fair Mission Team How Great is OUR GOD! And we must say, how great are the people of the Sandy Creek Baptist Association and Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church. Sandy Creek for having the foresight to help the children in the Powell River Baptist Association, Jonesville, Virginia and Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church for being the Project Coordinating Church (PCC) for the Shoe Fair Mission. A mission team of ten people traveled to Jonesville, Virginia to help with the shoe fair. On Friday the team fitted 325 school age children with shoes, serving 134 families. On Monday, 181 pairs of shoes were fitted serving 95 families. The total of 506 pairs of shoes became the largest number ever fitted in all the 16 years of this shoe fair. For each mission group, Sunday school class or individual who purchased shoes for the shoe fair, thank you. For you who purchased socks or donated money, thank you. This mission depends on people like you to keep shoes on these children. For most of them, it will be the only pair of shoes they will have for the entire school year. To see their faces light up and to receive the hugs and high fives is worth it all. As one of our team members shared….we will never know how many of those children will become adults and remember that when they were growing up, someone gave them a much needed pair of shoes. Lift these children and their families up in your prayers. And thanks to the dedicated mission team who traveled to Jonesville, Virginia….From
